Terrible. Happy - #51 - Kristyan Stjerne: Balancing future primitive.
play

04/18/20 • 123 min

Send us a text

Kristyan Stjerne is a surfer, yogi, artist and a calming presence in pandemic times. Kristyan divides his time between California and Bali, making art, maintaining his yoga practice and connecting with the ocean. Kristyan finds his spiritual home in Uluwatu Bali, which is where we recorded this episode...sitting on the cliffs of the Bukit peninsula, listening to the sounds of the Indian Ocean bouncing waves off the reef. Uluwatu has always felt like a sacred place for me (like many) and to record a podcast in this location was a profound moment for me. Like Kristyan said to me recently "It is a sacred place for sacred souls".
When you spend time with Kristyan, you realise very quickly that you are in the presence of a deeply conscious human of a high frequency. You feel safe from judgement or ridicule when you are around him. Kindness, gratitude and empathy radiate. I am grateful our paths aligned so this conversation could take place. For me, there was some real healing that came out of our discussion both on and off record (who spoke for another hour or two after the show).

In this week's episode, Kristyan is with me to share his journey, experiences, challenges and hopes for the future.

Terrible. Happy - #207 - Andrew Brophy: Just Brophy.
play

09/09/23 • 69 min

Send us a text

Andrew Brophy joins me from his home on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland Australia, for a casual chat about his life so far. Andrew discusses his early years growing up in Margaret River WA, why he chose skateboarding over surfing, getting looked after by Brett Margaritis when he was a grom, those pivotal years living and skating in London, getting on Cliche' Skateboards, the transition to his current sponsor; Girl Skateboards, the instant friendship chemistry he found with Mike Carroll, the importance of Megan Baltimore to the longevity of the Girl Skateboard company, why "that" 360 flip over the picnic table was such a special moment in time for him, putting family first, the challenges of maintaining a pro career for an American company whilst living in Queensland Australia, injuries, sobriety, his backyard skatepark, and much much more.
Since the provenance of Girl Skateboards in 1993, the brand has continued to etch a deep and profound legacy in skateboarding... and deservedly, Andrew Brophy, the kid from Margaret River, is part of that legacy. Epic.

Terrible. Happy - #29 - Esther Milanzi (Ubuntu): Radiating bread crumbs
play

11/17/19 • 116 min

Send us a text

Esther Milanzi (Ubuntu) is a creative writer, educator, traveler, wife to her husband Angelo and someone who radiates bread-crumbs for other creatives. She is the co-founder of the Surat Warrior Writers group in Thailand, she conducts weekly creative writing workshops and writer’s groups here in Bali, she is passionate about building a community of creatives and cultivating alternative ways for people to connect (other than just partying). Esther is currently a superstar educator at the globally recognised Green School, Bali. She is a black South African and half Caucasian American who has spent most of her life in America with her mother and two sisters. Esther was estranged from her biological father who was deported from the USA when she was three years old. The opportunity to visit the birthplace of humanity (Africa) arrived after she finished graduate school from Florida State University with a degree in International Education Development. Esther was then awarded a Fulbright grant to teach leadership and literacy skills at a FET college in Vereeniging, South Africa, an Afrikaans town forty minutes south of Johannesburg. Esther’s traveling experiences (and blogging while doing so), became an unintentional journal of her healing journey, it has helped her to develop a deeper understanding of the post-apartheid racial climate, and it has given her a sense of closure after visiting her father’s gravesite (twenty-three years later). Esther’s travel journey of self-realisation also led her to meeting her paternal family (including a younger brother and sister). It was with this connection that she received, from her cousin, her South African name Ubuntu; meaning humanity. In this week’s episode, Esther is with me to share her experiences, challenges, strength, and hopes for the future.

This week, we dissect skate park reviews and etiquette with Leon Paxton. Leon shares his journey from avid skateboarder to online personality, offering a view into the dedication behind his craft. Along with Steve Tierney, this conversation dives into the heart of skate culture and the onus of passing the torch to the next generation with respect and authenticity.
Navigating the digital sphere isn't easy, and challenges the culture as we know it. However, Leon's tale of personal growth and adapting to the ever-evolving social media landscape gives a unique perspective that might put the gatekeepers and nay-sayers on notice. From letters, to PO boxes for stickers, to direct messages on Instagram, engagement with fans has transformed, and so has the path from passion to career. We examine the resilience required to stay true to one's self, as Leon shares his transition from vehicle bodybuilder to personal trainer, and finally to YouTube connoisseur amid the worldwide upheaval brought by COVID-19 lockdowns.
This episode is a great conversation that examines the individualities of skater styles, setups, ands revels in the personal expressions that make skateboarding the colourful mosaic of creativity that it is.
Enjoy,
Shan

When I sat down with Kane Horsepool, the artist also known as Trait, we didn't just talk art; we ventured into the depths of personal growth, the struggle for authenticity, and the profound effects of integrating one's deepest values with creative pursuits. Kane’s candid reflections on mental health, his commitment to being a present husband and father, and his artistic process offer a stark view into the life of someone balancing the rigors of full-time work with an unquenchable need to create. His upcoming show at the Bad News Gallery in Wollongong promises to be a true manifestation of an artist who is letting go...so they can grow.
We reminisce about formative influences, the sustenance we draw from passions like skateboarding, and the importance of local culture and grassroots environmental efforts. There’s links to the emotional growth that comes from confronting challenges head-on, and the unapologetic truth that one's well-being is paramount to creative success.
Kane shines a light on the transformative power of art in all its forms. So join us for a conversation that's as much about the art on the canvas as it is about the art of living a mindful, purposeful life.
Enjoy,
Shan

Join me as I sit down with the remarkably knowledgeable Jim Turvey, skate historian and zine aficionado, for a captivating exploration of the gritty heart of Australian skate culture. In a storytelling tapestry weaved with personal anecdotes and historical threads, Jim takes us on a ride through the pivotal moments of his life, starting with his family's move to Newcastle and leading into the DIY dynamics of skate zine culture that have become the lifeblood of the skateboard community. We tackle the tall poppy syndrome that often shadows success within Australian skateboarding, and delve into the reflective journey of maintaining humility while celebrating the strong bonds and friendships that are as much a part of skateboarding as the boards themselves.
In a celebration of subcultural print, we trace the evolution of skate zines, those raw, personal leaflets that captured the essence of skateboarding long before mainstream media took notice. Listen as we highlight the journey of Amnesia Skateboards and its transformation from a local zine into a cultural touchpoint, casting hometown skaters into the limelight. The complexities of skate history curation are unpacked, with a sensitive eye on the delicate balance between documenting a community's narrative and honouring those who feel overlooked.
Enjoy,
Shan
