US Open R3 - Djokovic fall adds to Alcaraz shock, Gauff fights through + Week 2 preview
09/01/24 • 68 min
The second week is set at the US Open in Flushing Meadows, without Novak Djokovic or Carlos Alcaraz. Words we never thought we would be saying! Alexei Popyrin got his revenge after losing to Novak Djokovic twice at slams already this year. This means Novak Djokovic is without a slam for the first time since 2017 and the first time since 2002 that one of the Big 3 have not won a slam.
Now that the draw has opened it up it presents a big opportunity for slam winner Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev as well as home hopes Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe to be the first US male winner since Andy Roddick in 2004!
On the women’s side the top seeds had no trouble racing through to Week 2, with Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Sabalenka and Paolini all breezing through to Round 4. Muchova and Wozniacki are on the comeback trail and have made it to the fourth round for the second year in a row despite not having the most time on court in preparation.
Joel and Chris also look ahead to some of next week’s clashes and revisit their Tennis Weekly predictions and make new ones based on the form of the top players in Week 1 and the luck of the draw in New York.

US Open R2 - Rybakina no-shows, Djokovic makes history + Tiafoe-Shelton is SET(!)
Joel and Kim are here to catch up on the second round action from Flushing Meadows in New York City, with the US Open now well underway in the hot, hot heat.
Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton have made their way through to setting up a highly anticipated US Open rematch in the 3rd round after their comfortable wins in the round of 64. Meanwhile, top seeds Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner safely progress, with Djokovic clocking up yet another milestone with 90 match wins now achieved at each of the 4 Grand Slams.
With Wimbledon Champion Barbora Krejickova ousted by Elena-Gabriela Ruse, and Karolina Pliskova retiring after 3 points against Jasmine Paolini, it hasn’t been the best of days for the Czech ladies. Harriet Dart and Katie Boulter also bow out, leaving no British women in the third round.
Joel and Kim also touch upon the epic first round encounter between Dan Evans and Karen Khachanov which has become the longest ever match in US Open history, and reflect on Emma Raducanu’s disappointing US Open and what has contributed to her poor result here yet again.

US Open R4 - Gauff defence ends on serve, Zheng wins at 2:15am & Draper's demolition
Joel and Kim are back to catch up on the 4th round action from Flushing Meadows, New York, as the Quarter Final line ups start to take shape.
With Britain’s Jack Draper through in seamless fashion, Americans Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz giving home fans something to shout about, and Sacha Zverev still on course for a maiden slam win, the Final 8 is shaping up nicely.
Meanwhile, in the ladies draw, Qinwen Zheng battles through a late night finish to defeat Donna Vekic in a rematch of the Olympic Final last month, in form American Jessica Pegula clinches her berth in yet another Slam Quarter, and defending Champion Coco Gauff falls to countrywoman Emma Navarro in a 3 set display of poor execution.
They also give a mid-tournament Collect A Set update, reflect on the dodgy video review call in the Kalinskaya-Haddad Maia match, and admire Karolina Muchova’s brilliant run through the draw with her latest victory over the very consistent Jasmine Paolini.
