Technology And The Sea - Fascination Marine Technology - Precise Positioning in The Sea with Jürgen Rüffer, ALLSAT GmbH

Precise Positioning in The Sea with Jürgen Rüffer, ALLSAT GmbH

Technology And The Sea - Fascination Marine Technology

Welcome to this podcast episode in which I talk to engineer Jürgen Rüffer. He is the managing director of ALLSAT GmbH in Hanover, where everything revolves around surveying.
Jürgen Rüffer is a geodesist, a surveying expert and much more than that.

But where do you actually need surveying at sea? Well, if you've ever seen an offshore installation from the air, you might have noticed that the individual wind turbines are lined up like on a string of pearls, very precisely.

How do you measure something like that? How accurate can you get with GPS data, for example? Not that accurate, says Jürgen Rüffer, only to within 1 meter. However, he manages to determine the location of an offshore wind turbine with centimetre accuracy. He will explain to us how this works in the course of this podcast episode.

BRIESE RESEARCH with Klaus Küper

Two points have already become clear: 1. The oceans are important. 2. We know far too little about them. To change that, German research ships are underway on all the world's oceans, carrying all kinds of marine technology, technology that can withstand the harsh conditions of the world's oceans.
In this podcast episode, you will get to know Klaus Küper, the man responsible for eight German research vessels, who manages them and, together with a dedicated team of 15 people, ensures that what is needed at any given moment is always on board so that important scientific experiments can be carried out.
Klaus Küper heads the research department at the BRIESE shipping company in Leer - here everything revolves around the eight research vessels. By the way, such a research ship is an exciting and interesting place to train and work! Klaus Küper told us that 250 seamen work there, and he also told us about a drastic experience he had as a 17-year-old deck boy that left a lasting impression on him: He sank with his ship in the English Channel and barely survived the sinking.

Research on the Seafloor with Thomas Rauschenbach and Steffen Knodt, Fraunhofer

In this podcast episode, we look at exciting research projects and their concrete application. We start directly on the seafloor, accompanying a robot, an autonomous vehicle that can work on its own down there.

And we learn a lot about marine technology research projects of the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, which is the world's leading research institution for applied research - it is always about future-oriented key technologies - marine technology plays a major ROLE here, at Fraunhofer, there is a dedicated competence network "Oceantechnology".

My guests in this podcast episode:

Thomas Rauschenbach, the spokesman for this competence network, and also the director of the Fraunhofer Applied Systems engineering.
Steffen Knodt, head of the Sustainable Ocean Business Center in Rostock/ Lübeck of the Fraunhofer.
