Why Supporting Local Journalism Matters, and How to Do It. EP: 568
Finding the Throughline with Kate Hanley
11/02/21 • 12 min
Local news outlets are a crucial piece of democracy. Journalists for local papers attend town hall meetings and school board meetings and zoning meetings and committee hearings and THEN THEY REPORT ON THEM. If the government or other entities that serve the public are up to shenanigans, or not fulfilling their duties, journalists are who bring that to light, and who report the full spectrum of a story and not just what one side wants people to know. Sadly, local journalism has been decimated over the last 15 years, and it got even worse over the pandemic. Let's talk about easy--some free, some not--ways to help keep our small local news outlets open.

The Problems with Wellness 4 Its a Slippery Slope to Rigid Thinking. EP: 591
Finding the Throughline with Kate Hanley
12/03/21 • 12 min
Consuming wellness content is kinda like that board game for kids Chutes and Ladders. It starts off like a ladder Take these steps to get your health to a better place. It’s cool, you’re learning things, getting ideas, trying them out in your own life, hopefully enjoying some tangible evidence of feeling better.
But you can also be moseying along and then boom, fall down a chute into some pretty hairy spaces. For example, falling pray to conspiracy thinking. Today I look at why that is and how you can keep your wits about you.

You know how in Goodfellas, Joe Pesci gets upset when someone calls him funny and he gets ticked off and says, "Am I clown? Do I amuse you?" all menacingly, like amusement is some kind of offense? Well, it's not. It's actually a SUPER powerful positive emotion and I've got an embarrassing story to tell that I think will help you experience it.

[Un-Do 2022]: Unsubscribe from the Ideas That Just Aren't True for You. EP: 607
Finding the Throughline with Kate Hanley
12/27/21 • 14 min
In honor of the year we just had, and how grueling it has been in terms of stress and uncertainty and the sheer volume of decisions we’ve had to make on a daily basis, I want to approach this new year’s season a little differently.
Instead of reflecting, and setting goals--both of which are great to do and if you love doing ‘em, good for you do NOT let me stop you--I am dedicating this week’s episodes to the theme Un-Do 2022: 5 Surprising Strategies for a Better Year.
I just think we’ve all had enough of “I’ve just gotta do this” or “let’s do this” thinking. Given where we are at this point in time, let’s NOT do. Or rather, let’s UN-do, and make way for a more nuanced and personal path to emerge.
Something else that’s different about this week is that I’ve got a co-host: my good friend Terri Trespicio, author of the brand new book Unfollow Your Passion and my go-to source for advice that flies in the face of conventional wisdom.
First up: Unsubscribe to those sneaky ideas that are gumming up the works in that beautiful brain of yours.
