Tech Intersect #61: Ping The Prof #3-What Every NFT Creative & Collector Should Know about IP

Kudos, Questions, Comments? Send it here.
In this episode of Tech Intersect, I do a third topic-specific episode because my inbox and DMs are overflowing and speaker requests are at an all-time high. And I’ve received so many questions about intellectual property and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and I’ve heard so much misinformation on social media, especially on Clubhouse, that I had to take a moment to share some IP basics to help creatives and collectors make sense of it all. And to help you steer clear of the noise. For example, a telltale sign that you’re about to get bad legal advice? It usually begins with “I’m not a (an IP) lawyer but ...”. In this ep, I explain the different types of IP, take a closer look at copyright and fair use, and what rights creatives transfer and what buyers acquire in an NFT sale? Bottom line: let the NFT creator or investor be wise and BEWARE! Follow, like, comment and share. And let’s connect @IPProfEvans & #EvansontheBlock.

Tech Intersect #60: Gafacci-An Artist’s Epic Journey from Juju Music Roots to “Nii” & NFTs
Kudos, Questions, Comments? Send it here.
In this episode, I speak with Gafacci, a renowned Ghanaian artist and visionary, whose productions naturally include an adventurous afro twist with strong influences of electronic music. It's in his DNA. His interest in music was nurtured by his father, a former band member of ‘Juju’ music legend ‘Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey’. He has earned great recognition among several excellent artists who quickly involved Gafacci in production sessions in and outside Africa. He is also the brain behind the Jowaa project, where he produced several popular tracks including #1 downloaded bass track on Juno in 2017 and toured around the world.
He is now experimenting with non-fungible tokens as an NFT crypto artist releasing the first Ghanaian space exploration series starring "Nii" the red cockerel in collaboration with Ghana’s renowned satirical artist, Bright Ackwerh. In our conversation, Gafacci shares his journey through the world of cryptocurrencies to crypto art, his creation process and selection of platforms as well as some of the pitfalls. And he and his manager, Yussef, share how Gafacci uses music and technology to advance his philanthropic goals throughout the Diaspora.

Tech Intersect #62: Ping the Prof #4-The NFT Minting Fine Print: Read Those Marketplace Terms and Conditions
Kudos, Questions, Comments? Send it here.
In this episode, I provide an overview of general Terms and Conditions of NFT minting and marketing platforms that you should expect, specifically related to intellectual property and royalties. Bottom line: Read the fine print! One of the benefits and features of minting is creating a record of creation and ownership that cannot be changed—immutable—so if you get it wrong in the beginning ... well, it’s not like you can call customer service to roll it back. Contrary to some critics, this space is not a bubble. In fact, NFT coding standards like ERC-721 have been around since 2017 (and the idea of smart contracts dates back to 1997)! But the hype cycle and FOMO is real. Take your time, get informed. Take off your creative cap and put on your business hat during this episode to get clear, get focused and get in the game.
