2020 has been an unusual and difficult year for many, and we understand that the full repercussions of what we have all been through are still to be felt - but with summer now distant and the glory of autumn in full flow, we continue with a healthy amount of discussion on some of our favourite horticultural topics, bringing a little dose of the garden to your daily lives.
Every Autumn trees and shrubs in many of our favourite large gardens turn hues of red, orange and yellow that provide one of the most magnificent displays of colour that you will see all year. However, when it comes to our own gardens flower is still the most dominant form of colour and Autumn displays don't always get the thought they should do to extend your gardens season. Head Gardeners Lucy and Saul wanted to put this right by discussing some of their favourite plants for this end of the year colour bonanza.

Borders, both herbaceous and mixed, are one of the keystones to any garden, and whether on a grand scale such as at Stonelands and East Donyland, or small in the average back garden - renovating every few years is essential to keep them looking at there best, creating a different look as the years go by and experimenting with differing styles and colour combinations. Lucy and Saul take a look at how they approach renovating their borders and why it is the ultimate test for any Head Gardener.

A few weeks back Saul escaped from Devon to finally see Lucy up in Essex - and so they took a long weekend Essex Road-trip to visit some local gardens, of which the highlight was the garden at Ulting Wick owned by plantswoman Philippa Burrough. In this second part of our visit we take a look at the cottage garden, white garden and some of the beautiful herbaceous planting, Lucy salivates over the Kitchen Garden and we have a chat to Ulting Wick's Head Gardener Lou Nicholls.

As the Coronovirus pandemic has changed many aspects of life over the past many months, the gardens and green spaces all across the UK have continued in full glory over the spring - but Summer has arrived and for many the outdoors is the sanctuary from the continued uncertainty of what lies ahead. Head Gardeners Saul and Lucy have still been full at work at Stonelands and Easy Donyland (as well as their own gardens) and continue to share their lives as professional horticulturists, there tips and tricks and their observations of their gardening lives.
Although the pandemic can be seen in a general negative light, there are some rays of positivity that have occurred, especially with the increased amount of time people have had to enjoy their environment and especially get stuck into some gardening. A lot of new and developing gardeners have emerged and Saul and Lucy hope that our industry can nurture many of these to take a permanent interest in their outside space. So in today's podcast we have a good discussion on the approach of media, horticulture groups and notable garden institutions should be taking to achieve realistic education for these fledgling horticulturists.

We are in the depths of winter, and whatever the weather may - or may not - have in store for us in this traditionally chilly month, Head Gardeners Saul and Lucy turn their thoughts to the year ahead. Often mistaken for a quieter season, there are plenty of winter tasks to complete and projects to initiate. Winter pruning, leaf clearing, renovations and new plantings will all be discussed (we can't promise that conversations about biscuits and lists won't also appear...). Whatever the topic, the duo hope to prime us all for the unfolding gardening seasons.
This week both Saul and Lucy are failures!! But does that matter - of course not. Failure - things going wrong, plants dying, weather ruining our garden are all part of the process, and in fact should be celebrated rather than hidden away. This episode we talk about failure as one of the most important parts in the life of gardener and how it informs a future practice and makes us look at the garden in a different light.

Ep.21 - The May bank holiday means more time in our home gardens - Saul has been joining online botanical classes from Florida and Lucy has been growing and selling plants from her Essex garden....

Lucy and Saul are fully aware that the world has taken a monumental shift - the Coronavirus outbreak has left our little bit of the world in Horticulture reeling both personally and professionally. So we both decided that instead of our longer format episodes every 3 weeks or so - we going to record shorter podcasts, through the week, to bring you a slice of our lives at East Donyland Hall and Stonelands and beyond - trying to bring a little bit of spring and sunshine to your eardrums.
Bank holidays are always gardening weekends in Lucy and Saul's houses - an extra day tending to there own personal patches is always well needed a they spend most of there times tending the larger gardens at Stonelands and East Donyland, but what have they been up to. Well Saul always relishes extra time to learn more about his beloved tropical plants - this time joining an Online Class given live by Fairchild Botanical Garden on Gingers, and Lucy spends more time in her amazing Kitchen Garden at home where among many weird and wonderful veg she is growing Agretti - a halophyte that adds a little crunch to her salads.
(Edit: It was only Monday afternoon when Saul realised it wasn't a Bank Holiday and spent the rest of the day feeling quite stupid as he pottered away in his garden at home. Having said that he's not changing this podcast now!)

Ep. 147 - Come on, rain! Whatever falls from our skies over the next few weeks and months will be sorely needed by the plants under Lucy and Saul's management. So, how best to conserve and harvest our water? Let the two head gardeners share their thoughts
Talking Heads - a Gardening Podcast

Long summer days, high temperatures and maximum sunlight are the hall marks of a good summer (lets hope for a little rain though!). The Summer of 2022 is eagerly awaited by all the keen gardens up and down the UK as herbaceous borders, roses, veg gardens and meadows are awash with new plantings, flower and a general sense of abundance that only Summer can bring. Whereas Spring is a steady ramping of growth the Summer is a time for 'peak plant' followed by the mellow and relaxed waning into Autumn - so slap on that sun scream, stick on your favourite summer hat and get out and enjoy all the hard work you've undertaken in your garden!
The sporadic nature of summer thorms is testing the patience of Head Gardeners, Saul and Lucy. Rain may be falling locally, but not on their respective Devonshire and Essex estates. So, how do the pair contemplate managing such erratic water supplies, and what can home gardeners do to emulate the same thinking? Water storage tanks, domestic dwelling planning regulations and grey water recycling all get the Talking Heads treatment - plus, we get an insight into what can happen in a head gardener's bathtub!

Ep. 88 - It's planting time! Lucy and Saul discuss the various ways to get this activity right, from bare-root roses to pots of perennials.
Talking Heads - a Gardening Podcast

Spring is in the air - as the early season flowers bring a hint of colour and joy, banishing the winter blues away. Head Gardeners such as Lucy and Saul relish this moment in the year as the starting gun for a season of flower, foliage and ultimate fun. Gardening kicks off and all the hard work of winter enters a crescendo of horticultural wonder.
Bare-root, container-grown, woody, herbaceous - all these variations affect the way you establish these plants in your garden. Early to mid spring is the ideal time to plant, so put that trowel and spade to good use by taking stock of what Saul and Lucy consider to be best practice. There are many different right ways to plant, but there are also pitfalls to avoid - get it right now and you'll enjoy your plant investments for many years to come.

Winter in the UK is either mild and damp, or cold and windy - and who would want to be outside as a gardener at this time of year - well Saul and Lucy for one, as these months are some of the busiest in all of the 12. While the garden may be slumbering, Head Gardeners and their teams are beavering away on major jobs, garden renovations, cleaning and tidying the years clutter and making plans for 2024. So join us every week to see what we're up to in the cold months in our work and home gardens.
Winter is slowly dissolving into Spring - and especially this year where the mildness and wet has caused many plants to start their Spring early and the lawns are quite shaggy from continual growth. Saul has all these issues in abundance at Stonelands, so while dodging the downpours he is getting as much work done while things dry up. Join him as he takes a look around the greenhouse and then attempts a live seed sowing demonstration (fantastic for a purely audio medium!), as the growing season starter gun is fired.
