Talking Bay 94: Star Wars Interviews - Ken Cunningham and David Shayne: Behind the LEGO Star Wars Summer Vacation
play

08/03/22 • 18 min

I had the opportunity, through Lucasflm, to talk to the director, Ken Cunningham and Executive Producer / Writer, David Shayne of the upcoming LEGO Star Wars Summer Vacation special.

This is a really quick, really fun deep dive into the newest addition of the LEGO universe, and I had an absolute blast talking to them both. (To set the scene for all you audio listeners, yes, I was wearing a tank-top and a Skywalker Ranch butter dish Hawaiian shirt.)

Sit back and enjoy the vibes.

Thank you so much to Ken and David, as well as Lillian and Rachel at Lucasfilm for coordinating all of this. The special is so much fun and comes out this Friday, August 5, on Disney+. Highly recommended on my end.

We have some cool episodes coming up very soon, including one with Senior Editor at Del Rey Books, Tom Hoeler. (And maybe a couple of surprises too.)

If you’re enjoying the show, please head to Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen to these episodes and leave us a five-star rating and review! It means the world.

Talking Bay 94: Star Wars Interviews - Niki Botelho: Teek in Ewoks - The Battle for Endor

Niki Botelho: Teek in Ewoks - The Battle for Endor

Talking Bay 94: Star Wars Interviews

play

09/23/20 • 13 min

We're LIVE and talking to Teek herself, Niki Botelho from The Battle for Endor.

This is a pretty short, fairly rare look inside making the second Ewok film, as well as Niki’s return as an Offworld Jawa in The Mandalorian ... and if that was her as Teek in the Star Tours boarding video. (And, of course, since this was recorded live, some of our audio is not as crisp as other episodes, but you’ll get over it.)

If you want even more Teek stories, head on over to the most recent episode of Blast Points, where there is almost 5 extra minutes of this interview, which I recorded to help celebrate their Ewok Movie Month.

And, of course, this episode would not be possible without our friends at Galactic Productions. Head to their website for future appearances, as well as a really great stock of online autographs: galacticproductionsevents.com

Next week: my very rare conversation with prequel production designer Gavin Bouquet, who I don’t think has talked about Star Wars in nearly 20 years. Wild stuff.

It is always so appreciated if you can leave a 5-star review of the show right here on your favorite podcast app, or on Podchaser: podchaser.com/TalkingBay94

"But the truth of it is, my name is Henry Jones. I just named myself Indiana after my dog. So my friends call me Indy."

Thank you for tuning in to We Named the Pod Indiana, a Talking Bay 94 spin-off podcast devoted to interviews with the cast, crew and creators who brought Indiana Jones to life.

I’m your host, Brandon Wainerdi, and today’s episode is a rare conversation with Sean Patrick Flanery, "Young Indy himself, star of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. From that first role to Powder and The Boondock Saints and beyond, it was awesome to get to quickly chat with this high-energy icon.

This quick conversation was recorded live at maybe my favorite convention in the world, the great Dallas Comic Show. There’s some background noise, etc. but it is a fantastic chat with an true icon.

Thanks again to Mr. Flanery for such an insightful and passionate look into his long career. If you missed the first episodes of this mini Indiana Jones spin-off, head to our show page for my previous interview with Belloq, Paul Freeman, and Fedora, Richard Young.

Next episode, we are back to Star Wars and our regularly scheduled programming.

This is a very special episode of Talking Bay 94. A couple of weeks ago, thanks to Lucasfilm, we got to participate in roundtable interviews with the cast of the upcoming Disney+ series, ANDOR.

We got about 20 minutes each with newcomers Kyle Soller and Denise Gough (“Syril Kam” and “Dedra Meero”), Genevieve O’Reilly (“Mon Mothma”) and executive producer Diego Luna (“Cassian Andor”).

It was a huge thrill, obviously, and I hope you all enjoy.

ANDOR coming to Disney+ next month on September 21, with the first three episodes.

Talking Bay 94: Star Wars Interviews - What is Talking Bay 94?

What is Talking Bay 94?

Talking Bay 94: Star Wars Interviews

This is a Star Wars podcast featuring the people who actually made Star Wars happen. This is a Star Wars podcast, simply, that interviews the people who were in Star Wars, who wrote for Star Wars, who lived Star Wars.

And, depending on when you listen to this, we’re releasing this on an important day in Star Wars history.

May 25, 2018 marks the 35th anniversary of Return of the Jedi. Besides a few small pieces of Disney Store memorabilia, Lucasfilm has been surprisingly quiet surrounding the milestone. Especially amongst the rest of the movies, Jedi feels often overlooked.

So the first few episodes of the podcast will be a mini-season of their own, interviewing some of the cast and crew from Return of the Jedi, celebrating that 35 years ago they were in a dimly lit studio in London that doubled as Jabba’s Palace or suffering through the scorching heat of the Yuma desert as creatures on Jabba’s Sail Barge.

Our first and second interviews, released today, are a nice complement to each other: Corey Dee Williams and Stephen Costantino were bandmates in 1982, traveling together to the sail barge set in Arizona and ended being a part of the Star Wars universe. Their stories are unlike anyone else’s who were in Star Wars: fish-out-of-water tales, focused on friendship.

If you have George Lucas’ email address, send it along. Otherwise, we’ll be plotting a course and figuring it out along the way.

Thanks for tuning in and may the Force be with us!

This is another very special episode of Talking Bay 94, to celebrate the finale of ANDOR. A few weeks ago, thanks to Lucasfilm, we got to participate in roundtable interviews with the crew of the upcoming Disney+ series, ANDOR.

We got about 30 minutes each with composer Nicholas Britell, Supervising Sound Editor David Acord and Visual Effects Producer TJ Falls, and Production Designer Luke Hull and Costume Designer Michael Wilkinson.

It was a huge thrill, obviously, and I hope you all enjoy as much as I did.

All episodes of ANDOR Season 1 are now streaming on Disney+.

Talking Bay 94: Star Wars Interviews - Gavin Bocquet: Prequel Production Designer, Star Wars Legend
play

09/30/20 • 52 min

The incredible work that Gavin Bocquet did with his team to bring worlds like Naboo, Coruscant and Geonosis to life in The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, cannot go unsaid.

This is a really rare interview with someone who made an indelible mark on the saga, as well as things like Young Indiana Jones, Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and so many more ... and I don’t think he’s talked in-depth about Star Wars in nearly a decade.

It was a huge honor and a really great conversation. Some topics discussed:

His early mentorship with Stuart Craig (Saturn 3, Harry Potter) as well as working of Return of the Jedi with Norman Reynolds, as a Draftsman (Speeder bikes and Greeblies)

Working with Steven Soderbergh on Kafka, his second ever film

Walking over to his neighbor's house, Rick McCallum, on Christmas Eve to inquire about working on Young Indiana Jones (later with David Tattersall and Trisha Biggar)

Of course, the Prequels: collaborating with Doug Chiang and John Knoll, location scouting with McCallum (who wanted to shoot in the Vatican), the Pink / Yellow highlighters

And wrapping with some serious Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance talk that no Henson fan will want to miss.

Thank you all for making September the most-listened-to month we’ve ever had.

And, for October, we have some incredible guests lined up, including Emily Swallow (The Armorer from The Mandalorian), pre-production wizard David Dozoretz, the geniuses at BLIND LTD, and author of the infamous but beloved Glove of Darth Vader series: Paul Davids.

Talking Bay 94: Star Wars Interviews - Matthew Reinhart Returns: Bringing the STAR WARS Galaxy to a Pop-Up Book
play

11/20/19 • 29 min

The paper engineer and the pop-up master himself, Matthew Reinhart, returns to the show after our live chat for Episode 38, to talk all about his latest book from Insight Editions ... STAR WARS: THE ULTIMATE POP-UP GALAXY.

Even Talking Bay 94 producer Jason gets out on the mic to help me ask the big questions all about design and Easter Eggs in his work.

(I would like to reiterate, that we were not joking about helping operate his Jabba cosplay at Celebration Anaheim.)

Of course, thank you as well to Eric Chang at Insight Editions for being such a huge supporter of this show and helping to coordinate this interview. The incredible THE ULTIMATE POP-UP GALAXY is in stores now and really is a perfect holiday gift for all ages. Not just saying that.

If you enjoy the show, please leave a five-star rating and review. It is enormously helpful.

Talking Bay 94: Star Wars Interviews - Terryl Whitlatch: Designing Jar Jar Binks, Sebulba and Dewbacks for STAR WARS
play

07/22/20 • 44 min

The incredibly talented artist responsible for the designs of Jar Jar Binks, Sebulba and so many more in The Phantom Menace is the legendary Terryl Whitlatch. Just flip through a dog-eared copy of Art Of TPM and see for yourself.

Ms. Whitlatch’s contributions to the saga cannot be overstated: whether it was the Dewbacks and new Jabba denizens of the Special Editions, the Podracer pilots or the creatures of Naboo’s planet core, I am just thrilled and honored to be able to share her story with you all and I hope you enjoy it as much as you’ll be quickly able to tell that I did.

I don’t think I’ve gushed in an interview like this before, but please correct me if I’m wrong. I just want to thank Ms. Whitlatch again for the incredible, incredible interview.

In the upcoming episodes, we’ll have Disney Imagineering’s Scott Trowbridge, as well as Masi Oka, who you may know as Hiro from HEROES, but who also worked at ILM during the Prequels. (I’ve teased quite a few more guests on our Talking Bay Twitter and Instagram accounts, so follow there to stay up to date.)

This week, we are heading to San Diego Comic Con, so be on the lookout for quick interviews from the floor, as well as some exciting scheduled opportunities that we can't wait to share.
