Our first episode of the season is with the Creator + Executive Producer of the children's television show Look Listen and Learn, Val Thomas-Matson. Val and I had a fantastic conversation on her surroundings growing up, family, and the creation of Look, Listen and Learn.
Val is a community organizer/activist with deep experience in media. In addition to early work at KING TV, she created, produced, and hosted the daily community affairs talk show Communities in Action for King County Government TV for three years. She has also worked extensively with the multi-award-winning production company North by Northwest, serving as co-host on Washington Grown, and managing video production elements for educational, nonprofit and government video campaigns. We discuss her most recent endeavor in this episode, which is Look Listen and Learn.
Look, Listen and Learn supports the emotional wellbeing of Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) families by offering fun, in-home learning tools for 3-8 years olds. LL+L exists at the intersection of arts, media, education and racial justice by providing culturally relevant storytelling, fundamental social-emotional skills, and critical messages of love and hope.
