Our first episode of the season is with the Creator + Executive Producer of the children's television show Look Listen and Learn, Val Thomas-Matson. Val and I had a fantastic conversation on her surroundings growing up, family, and the creation of Look, Listen and Learn.
Val is a community organizer/activist with deep experience in media. In addition to early work at KING TV, she created, produced, and hosted the daily community affairs talk show Communities in Action for King County Government TV for three years. She has also worked extensively with the multi-award-winning production company North by Northwest, serving as co-host on Washington Grown, and managing video production elements for educational, nonprofit and government video campaigns. We discuss her most recent endeavor in this episode, which is Look Listen and Learn.
Look, Listen and Learn supports the emotional wellbeing of Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) families by offering fun, in-home learning tools for 3-8 years olds. LL+L exists at the intersection of arts, media, education and racial justice by providing culturally relevant storytelling, fundamental social-emotional skills, and critical messages of love and hope.

We are trying something new as part of our second season. Special episodes focused on questions and topics that pop up behind the scenes discussed in conversation with either my co-producer and husband, Darius Heggins or our social media manager, Mo Bell. These episodes are not meant to tell anyone how to think or feel, but to share our conversations in the hopes that it might inspire listeners to further analyze these topics for themselves. Have your own conversations, do your own research, and get in touch with us with your thoughts and ideas if you are moved to do so. We’d love to hear from you.
In this episode Darius and I discuss the terminology, Ally and Accomplice.
One other short announcement - with the holiday coming up we will be taking a short break in releasing episodes. Our next new episode will be released on January 11th. In the meantime, catch up on Season 1 or any episodes you’ve missed this season so far. We appreciate your support and will see ya in the New Year!

It was a joy to connect with Alfred Jackson. He shares about his experience pursuing the performing arts, people who deeply influenced his pursuits, performing on cruise ships, and his own original creations. We also hear about the new album he is set to release on June 17, 2022.
Born and raised in the neighborhood of South Central, Los Angeles, CA, Alfred Jackson began his musical journey at the Marla Gibbs Performing Arts School and later the Amazing Grace Conservatory under the direction of both Wendy Raquel Robinson and Tracy L. Coley. It was there that Jackson’s love of performing and entertaining continued to blossom and grow. His formal education alongside his natural capabilities provided him with multiple unique opportunities, including sharing the stage and recording with some of music greats, including Diane Warren, Rodney Jerkins, Brian Michael Cox, Jason Derulo and Stevie Jay, to name a few. It also led Jackson to appear at some of music’s most legendary venues including House of Blues, The Roxy, Ivar and the Key Club. Take Notice: Amplifying Black Stories
Season 4, Episode 9: Matt McAlman
Seattle-based drummer, Matt McAlman, discusses his pursuits in music since a young age and pursuits beyond music now. With a focus on music business, logistics, and creating opportunities for the music community we hear Matt's experience bringing music to CHOP, getting involved in the music community through MoJam Mondays, and playing drums in space!
The origins of Marshall Law Band trace back to the fortuitous meeting of rapper Marshall Hugh and saxophonist Marty Thordarson, who became roommates during their college years. In 2017, they decided to form MLB and quickly enlisted the talents of Evan Robertson on bass, Matt McAlman on drums, Josh Richins on guitar, and Zack Olson on keys, all hailing from Snohomish County, Washington. Driven by their shared passion for effecting positive change and addressing social justice issues, the band wholeheartedly joined the local Seattle protests following the tragic death of George Floyd in 2020. Following a week of powerful performances at the protests, they channeled their experiences into heartfelt songs, which eventually became their debut album, 12th and Pine. The album was expertly produced by Jack Endino, renowned for his work with legendary acts such as Nirvana and Soundgarden. Since then, the Marshall Law Band has embarked on two successful European tours and garnered attention from prominent media outlets, including BBC News, CNN, the Seattle Times, and other major national and regional press.
