Tailgate Guys BBQ Podcast

We are back!!! And we’re pumped as Season 3 of the Tailgate Guys BBQ Show Podcast fires up.

Getting us started is one of the biggest names in BBQ, Travis Clark of Clark Crew BBQ. A two-time KCBS Team of the Year, 2017 American Royal World Series of BBQ Grand Champion and 2019 Jack Daniels World Championship Invitational BBQ Champion it’s always entertaining to visit with Travis. He tells about the thriving business Clark Crew BBQ Restaurant in Oklahoma City has done, despite opening just a couple of months before a pandemic. But the breaking news? After a year away from competition, Travis is coming back for a handful of big events in 2021. Listen to find out more.

We also welcome our first guest from 2016 when we debuted the Tailgate Guys on low-powered, local radio. Terry Black, the 2000 Whole Hog champ at Memphis in May World BBQ Championship who’s called by many The Godfather of St. Louis BBQ, gives us some personal reflections on Mike Mills. Called simply “The Legend” for his impact on the BBQ world, Mills passed away during the holiday season.

Thanks to our listeners, both long-time and new. We are thankful for you and want to hear your input any time about potential guests or anything BBQ-related. Join the fun on our Facebook page and don’t forget to follow along on Twitter @TailgateGuys999 or Instagram @tailgateguysbbq

A big shout-out to our sponsor/marketing partners: Blues Hog BBQ Sauce, Royal Oak Charcoal, The Butcher Shoppe, Affordable Income Tax & Payroll, DDR Fabrication and Arkassppi Smoke Live and The Arkassippi Combo.

Tailgate Guys BBQ Show, Episode 96: Rub Bagby, Colby Archie

We conclude Season 2 of the Tailgate Guys BBQ Show in Podcast form by featuring two outstanding BBQ conversations while also discussing some holiday gifts from Santa for the open-fire aficionado in your life.

Both our guests on Episode 96 are making their first appearances on the show. Leading off is Rub Bagby, perhaps the most-decorated pitmaster in Florida. The Florida Barbecue Association Hall of Famer tells us about his start in competition cooking in 2003, some of the places BBQ has taken him and offers great advice to the average backyard cook.

We’re also joined by Colby Archie, also known in the BBQ world as “Johnny Briquette” from the southeast Missouri competition team Pit Hustle BBQ. As Colby explains, Pit Hustle is a brand beyond just cooking, it’s also about promoting open-fire cooking in various ways including his growing social media presence. Pit Hustle recently took a tour of eight esteemed Texas BBQ restaurants and he gives us a rundown.

As Season 2 of our show on podcast draws to a close, we want to thank our listeners and guests who dialed up the show. We also give a big shout-out to our sponsors who made the fun possible: Blues Hog, Royal Oak Charcoal, The Butcher Shoppe, The BBQ Central Show, Affordable Income Tax & Payroll, DDR Fabrication, Colaw RV and The BBQ League. Special thanks to Vietti Marketing Group and In the Garden of Eden for supporting our competition efforts in 2020.

We look forward to firing up Season 3 in a few weeks. Please NOTE that we are accepting sponsorships for 2021. Please let me know if you would like to join us at [email protected].

Until then, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and #SmokeEmIfYouGotEm

Tailgate Guys BBQ Show, Episode 98: Fred Robles, Tony Matassa

One of America’s elite pitmasters is heading up a new competition BBQ sanctioning body. On Episode 98 of the Tailgate Guys BBQ Show Podcast, we visit with Fred Robles about this big project.

Fred is President of the new Champions Barbecue Alliance. One of its goals is to modernize the competition by using technology to speed the scoring process, while also giving constructive feedback to teams receiving low scores. Fred, the 2019 American Royal Open Grand Champion with his Rio Valley Meats team, breaks it all down and explains how he sees the CBA fitting into the competition landscape.

Also joining us is chef Tony Matassa from BBQGuys.com, the popular one-stop-shop for all things live-fire cooking. Tony tells us how he made the transition from his family’s background in Italian restaurants to live-fire and touches on the booming popularity of BBQ for the backyard cook during this time of pandemic.

Co-hosts Lyndal and Steve also talk Super Bowl LV, both from football and food angles and make clear whether they’re leaning toward Young Gun Mahomes or Old Man Brady for the big game.
