Generating Predictable Income Joining Affiliate Programs with Justine Galea
Streamlined Solopreneur: Tips to Help Solopreneurs Automate Their Business
07/08/24 • 42 min
I remember the first time I got an affiliate payout. I didn’t even know it was coming. The money just showed up in my account.
“What is this from?” Then an email followed. A hosting company I had written a blog post about paid my affiliate commission for the last 2 months.
Since then, I’ve been stumbling through, clumsily trying to make affiliate income an appreciable part of my income – but it’s never worked as well as I hoped.
So I brought in an expert: my friend Justine. She’s been doing affiliate programs forever and currently leads ConvertKit, as well as consults through her own business, Brilliant Affiliate. She’s the perfect person to talk to.
Justine not only sets me straight, but she offers a TON of fantastic actionable advice for how to make the most of affiliate programs, how to find the right ones, and how they can live harmoniously (and even help) with sponsorships.
Top Takeaways
- Affiliate programs provide a way to earn passive income by referring customers to products/services you recommend. Look for ones that pay well.
- Target your affiliate content to the right people – people who are low in the funnel, and are weighing their options between your recommended product and competitors.
- Balance affiliate income with sponsorships - affiliates are more passive/long-term while sponsorships are good for timely campaigns. But being a good affiliate can also help you land sponsored campaigns from the same company!

06/19/23 • 47 min
It would be a dream of mine to grow a newsletter from 0 to 8,000+ in less than 6 months. But that’s exactly what Chenell Basilio did. The way she did it? Deeply researched, super-helpful content. See, she teaches people how successful creators grew their newsletters to 50,000+ subscribers. And today, she’s going to tell us all about her process. And in How I Built It PRO, we talk about money and goals for the next 6 months.
Top Takeaways
- Creating unique, long-form content can be a boon to your website or newsletter; people want something good and helpful!
- Quick capture is important. Chenell uses Apple Notes because that allows her to quickly open and dictate notes while she’s listening to podcasts.
- Chenell will only do deep dives on creators who’ve built an audience since 2018. That way she can cover techniques that still work today, making the content relatable.

Building a Personalized Email Newsletter That Works for You with Brennan Dunn
Streamlined Solopreneur: Tips to Help Solopreneurs Automate Their Business
05/16/22 • 56 min
A few weeks ago we talked to Louis Nicolls about the importance of having a good newsletter that helps people — some targeted, educational resource. Brennan Dunn knows a thing or two about that and has built an empire around segmentation and personalization. The last time he was on the show, we talked about Right Message. Today, we talk to him about email templates and newsletter strategies that we can implement with his new tool, Palladio.
Top Takeaways
- Brennan equates emails to sales pages multiple times. Yes, they are a great way to establish trust and be a resource for subscribers...but we also want them to stand out and make them memorable for when we need to sell.
- Instead of doing educational emails, pausing them and doing a sales sequence, Brennan recommends mixing in targeted sales messages through your emails. This allows you to show helpful resources at a time the subscriber is ready to buy...making it a win/win for both of you.
- Evergreen, or “Shadow” newsletters as Brennan calls them, are a great way to build a resource, be consistent with your newsletter, and focus on other tasks around marketing or building your list.

How Creators can Find Hidden Profit in Their Business with Nev Harris
Streamlined Solopreneur: Tips to Help Solopreneurs Automate Their Business
07/25/22 • 62 min
What’s the difference between making money on the side, and running a business? There are probably dozens of ways to answer that, but if I had to answer, I’d say that it has to do with how you manage your money. Early in the WordPress space, people were learning they could make money with their work, but we’re managing it properly. I think we’re seeing something similar in the creator space, so I’ve brought in Profit Expert Nev Harris to tell us the 4 ways to find hidden profit in your business and get your finances in order.
Top Takeaways:
- People say, “you have to spend money to make money,” but Nev says, “spend smart money to make money.” Buying the latest and greatest CRM, microphone, or computer will actually make you money. But hiring a VA might.
- You need to find profit in your business by getting out of the dark. Nev says you need to focus on 4 areas: Revenue, Profit, Expenses, and Efficient. Start slow and pick one per quarter.
- When it comes to efficiency, If you’re spending too much time doing the work, you’re chasing pennies and leaving dollars on the floor. Get to a place where you only do what you need to do.

Creating Sponsorable Content with Melanie Deziel
Streamlined Solopreneur: Tips to Help Solopreneurs Automate Their Business
09/12/22 • 60 min
Perhaps it’s fitting that today’s interview is a play in 3 acts. After all, I’m talking to Melanie Deziel, speaker, author, and founder of Story Fuel. It makes sense that we talk about creating good content in 3 acts: idea generation, brand deals, and coming up with headlines. This discussion is completely packed with fantastic advice to help up your content creation game.
Top Takeaways:
- When it comes to content, we often focus too much on the format, and not the actual message. instead, determine what you’re saying first. Then figure out how to best say it. The “how” drives the format and where you’ll publish.
- Brand-sponsored content is being created in collaboration with or on behalf of a brand that wouldn’t be created otherwise. They are leveraging your trust, so find overlap between what the brand wants to say and what your audience wants to hear.
- When writing headlines, remember they are a formula. Ask “What’s the purpose of this headline,” or put differently: what is this content doing? That should help you determine the type of headline to write.

My Biggest Failure, and Success, of 2024
Streamlined Solopreneur: Tips to Help Solopreneurs Automate Their Business
12/16/24 • 23 min
2024 has been a transformative year for me. I learned a ton about myself and my business, and for the first time in a while I feel like I’m not flailing. I’ll have the clearest plan I’ve had in a long time in 2025 — one that’s reinforced by conversations I’ve had, not just hunches. So for the last episode of the year, I wanted to do a quick year in review where I talk about my biggest success, my biggest failure, and the lessons I learn.
Plus, some feedback from last week’s episode on using AI.
My Biggest Success
This was definitely ranking #1 in Google for “Podcast Coach”. It shows that my work to grow this area of my business is working out!
Biggest Failure
My Be everywhere strategy. I made a big deal about it and abandoned after 4 months, since it was very clearly not working. It was basically all downsides. It also resulted in two other outcomes:
- Going to stop publishing on Medium in 2025
- Shutting down my membership
Lessons
- Know your niche. I thought I knew mine but it got a lot clearer the back half of the year, and I saw a positive impact because of it.
- Don’t discount SEO/Google, and even ChatGPT, which is being used for search more. As social media is fracturing further,
- Focus on one thing at a time. My Be Everywhere strategy left me trying to do too many things at once, and none of the succeeded.

Making the Most of Your Stream Deck with Cat Mulvihill
Streamlined Solopreneur: Tips to Help Solopreneurs Automate Their Business
03/13/23 • 60 min
There’s nothing better than good gear and automation talk, and that’s exactly what we’re getting today. Cat Mulvahill is one of my favorite YouTube creators because she has shown me so many cool things about eCamm Live. But it turns out we’re both also huge Stream Deck nerds. So if you’ve been looking to get the most out of your Stream Deck (or need a compelling argument to buy one), today’s episode is for you.
Top Takeaways:
- Cat uses her Stream Deck with eCamm Live to do transitions, lower thirds, and more during recording. Because of that, she barely has to edit her videos. It’s like storyboarding your whole video in advance!
- She and I both use our Stream Decks for more than just streaming though. One of Cat’s cool actions in a multi-action that sets up her entire bookkeeping workspace. This cuts down considerably on the amount of time she spends on the actual accounting stuff.
- When it comes to creating content, she picks topics that are interesting and solve a problem. That usually generates comments and questions, that in turn, leads to more content ideas!

Rethinking Our Relationship with Time and Money with Khe Hy
Streamlined Solopreneur: Tips to Help Solopreneurs Automate Their Business
03/18/24 • 57 min
I abhor hustle culture. Telling someone to work a full-time job, then go home and work more all for some goal that keeps changing is, in my opinion, how to lead an empty life. I’m worried that, even in 2024, we continue to fetishize making money and hustling. So I decided to take it to Khe Hy.
Khe, if you don’t know, worked hard – as he puts it, he hustled for 10 years of his life. He worked on Wall Street, becoming the equivalent of a junior partner in a law firm, and earning a 7-figure salary. But he left that job, and he’s built a life he enjoys.
But he makes it very clear: sometimes you do need to hustle. Life is full of seasons – and recognizing that seasonality is important. We cover a ton of topics in our short time.
Top Takeaways
- There are seasons to life. It’s important to recognize that and adjust for the season you’re in.
- If you’re working to eventually gain more time, ask yourself if you can cut some costs and gain that time now. Sure, someone could pay you $10,000 for 5 hours of data entry – but do you want to do data entry, or would you rather have those 5 hours free?
- There’s a difference between revenue and profit. Most people share top line revenue, but what are they really taking home?

Using Your Podcast for Lead Generation with Sam Munoz
Streamlined Solopreneur: Tips to Help Solopreneurs Automate Their Business
07/18/22 • 62 min
A drum I’ve been beating for a while is you don’t need sponsors to make money podcasting. In fact, it might not even be the best way to make money. What if you had a product so perfectly aligned with the audience of your podcast, that you could get your listeners to buy it? That’s exactly what Sam Munoz does, and her approach to free content is admirable. If you have ANY business where you’re creating content, you need to hear this conversation. Plus, in Build Something More, Sam and I exchange stories about the time we wrote code for robots.
Top Takeaways:
- It’s OK to get paid for your thoughts. Whenever Sam thinks about free content, she tries to connect it back to her paid offerings. After all, if you’re doing something for your business, what you’re doing should be in the service of making your business succeed.
- You need to spend your time wisely. When you don’t have the margin to think about how your content, which is a lot of work, serves your business or your paid offerings. This hurts you, and your audience, who should benefit from your services.
- Sam’s podcast serves as the top of the funnel for her mentorship. The audiences align perfectly, and her consistent call to action provides enough repetition for people to turn into students. This works perfectly for her because everything aligns so well!
