As the engine of an organization, the strategic financial leader is called to shift the organizational mindset, moving a company and its employees towards a culture founded on growth, innovation, and resilience. Through interviews with CFOs, entrepreneurs, and top business executives, Steve takes listeners inside the world of corporate finance to uncover the essential strategies that business leaders can follow to drive successful business transformation and profitability. In this podcast, Steve and guests share stories and steps to help companies shift from transactional to strategic, responsive to proactive, and from setting goals to exceeding them.

Strategic Financial Leadership - 19: Building an Elite Organization With Don Wenner
play

05/17/21 • 54 min

One of the biggest barriers to a business getting to the next level of success is the leader’s mindset. Instead of focusing on leading the company strategically, struggling leaders get caught in the day-to-day operations of the business. This creates a bottleneck on growth. To build a truly elite organization, leaders need to adopt a strategic mindset while relying on a systematic approach to growth and profitability. Today’s guest, Don Wenner, author of “Building an Elite Organization” is an expert on this topic.

Don Wenner is the Founder and CEO of DLP Real Estate Capital, a leader in real estate investing, private direct lending, construction, management, and sales. DLP has been ranked as an Inc. 5,000 Fastest-Growing US company for eight consecutive years, with an average three-year growth rate exceeding 400 percent and more than $1 billion in assets. Named one of the top fifteen real estate professionals by REAL Trends and The Wall Street Journal for seven years straight, Don has closed more than $4 billion in real estate transactions. He resides in St. Augustine, Florida, with his wife and two sons.

Strategic Financial Leadership - 28: Controlling Your Narrative With Lida Citroën
play

07/20/21 • 52 min

Reputation is everything, seemingly now more than ever. With cancel culture in full swing, your brand, personal and professional, needs constant care and direction. Be it fact or even just speculation, one wrong turn can have you backed up against the wall when trying to further you and your business’s goals.

This is where Lida Citroen comes in. As an award-winning branding and reputation management expert who designs and enhances the identities of executives, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders globally, her message supports the idea that at the root of building credible goals and brands, are the values defined specifically to who YOU are. Sticking to these values when making every decision, and allowing yourself to say ‘no’ when an opportunity does not align, is what Lida has found to be the gateway to constructing a positive brand and earning a reputation worthy of remembrance.

Lida’s popular TEDx Talk, “The Power of Gratitude and Generosity”, multiple courses on LinkedIn Learning, and business workshops showcase her empowering delivery style and message. Her work has been featured on MSNBC, Fortune Magazine, Forbes.com, Harvard Business Review, Bloomberg, The Hallmark Channel, US News & World Report, HR News, among others. She is the author of several books, one of which was published this year, titled Control the Narrative: The Executive’s Guide to Building, Pivoting and Repairing Your Reputation.

Strategic Financial Leadership - 43: Investing in Yourself With Yusef Alexander
play

11/02/21 • 41 min

Taking risks, especially when it involves money, is not for the faint of heart. As a society, we are taught to save up our money dollar by dollar until we need it for a rainy day or retirement. However, our guest today, Yusef Alexander, disproves this notion. With inflation and the constant of change, sitting on money is only a disservice to your future self. Rather, that money should be working for you to further invest in yourself by diversifying your assets, feeding into your curiosities and learning from your mistakes.

As co-founder of REAP, Yusef brings over 20 years of experience in the successful development of commercial and residential assets. His work includes negotiating, evaluating, and sourcing opportunities and creating added value in properties. Serving as REAP’s asset financial manager, Yusef fosters relationships with regional, leasing, and on-site managers to ensure consistent alignment with the company’s values and principles.

Yusef’s philanthropic concerns are early childhood literacy and financial literacy for adults. He is the author of Deal by Deal: A Practical Guide to Real Estate Investing and holds a degree in business economics from UCLA. He has also served as a guest professor at the UCLA School of Public Policy as well as been an invited event panelist for the Department of Economics.

Strategic Financial Leadership - 45: The Private Equity Playbook With Adam Coffey
play

11/16/21 • 67 min

Globally, there is currently about a half of trillion dollars in dry powder, or capital that has been committed by investors but has not been invested or allocated, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. This means there is a tremendous amount of opportunity for business leaders who are looking to grow their business portfolio or sell their company via the private equity asset class. However, to be effective at maximizing value in the private equity space, business leaders need to have a playbook and understand exactly how it works and who are the players. That's why I'm looking forward to my conversation with Adam Coffey, a CEO who has two decades of experience building businesses for private equity companies.

Adam is an inspiring and authentic leader who creates high-performance cultures and drives transformative growth. Over the past 21 years, he has had the honor of serving as President and CEO of three national private equity-backed service companies, each in different industries.

Adam is an active mentor to MBA candidates and is a regular guest speaker at UCLA. With a diverse background, he has led several commercial and industrial service businesses, is a licensed general contractor, a pilot, a former GE executive, an alumnus of the UCLA Anderson Executive Program, and a veteran of the US Army.

Adam’s first book, The Private Equity Playbook, was released in 2019 and became an instant #1 Amazon Best Seller and private equity cult classic. His second book, The Exit Strategy Playbook was released in September of 2021 and also was a #1 Amazon Best Seller. He was named one of the “Most Influential Leaders” by the Orange County Business Journal for 3 straight years, and in 2021 was named to their prestigious "OC Top 50".

Coffey makes his home in Westlake, TX with his wife and young daughter.

Strategic Financial Leadership - 22: Product Led Search Engine Optimization With Eli Schwartz
play

06/07/21 • 50 min

Most leaders today understand the value of their company, products, or services appearing front and center on internet search engines. However, too many organizations pursue flawed strategies and waste a lot of money trying to position their companies at the top of these search engines. Traditionally, marketing teams and strategists will seek out the keywords for their offerings, and then deploy a content strategy filled with these words to boost their web listings. But as Google, Bing and other search engines incorporate more artificial intelligence and focus on driving a better user experience, organizations are finding that their old approaches just aren’t as effective anymore.

Eli is an SEO expert and consultant with more than a decade of experience driving successful SEO and growth programs for leading B2B and B2C companies. He helps clients like Shutterstock, Gusto, WordPress, BlueNile, Quora, Getaround, Mixpanel, and Zendesk build and execute Global SEO strategies that dramatically increase their organic visibility at scale. In his newest book—“Product-Led SEO: The Why Behind Building Your Organic Growth Strategy”, Eli shares tips about differentiating oneself from the competition through a distinctive blend of creativity and logic.

In the past, Eli led the SEO team at SurveyMonkey, building organic search from nearly zero to one of the largest growth drivers at the company. He helped launched SurveyMonkey’s first APAC office and oversaw international SEO pre-and post-IPO.
