Ep. 104 Steelers Go To Washington

Steelers Outpost Podcast
Steelers Go To Washington Steelers 30 Tampa Bay 28 Our prayers go out to the family of Steelers wide receiver coach Darryl Drake who passed away on Sunday morning, August 11. He was 62 years old. No cause of death was given. Coach Drake leaves behind his wife, Sheila, three daughters, and several grandchildren. Expectations of a quality performance were low, but this was an entertaining game. Frustratingly, but not surprisingly, this was a highly-flagged game with a combined 24 penalties for 186 yards.\ The Main Events for us was watching the ascension of James Washington and Devin Bush’s debut. This guys in NFL ready as evidenced by his 10, first half tackles. QB play was sharp, with Dobbs, Rudolph and Hodges showing poise, even when experiencing pressure. You need look no further than the score to see the offense was moving the ball. The guys we hoped to perform well, generally met the bar they set in training camp, although a couple of guys are going to have to firm up their play in the upcoming games. We were especially happy to see Boz go 2-2 in field goals, hitting one for 47 yards. The Antonio Brown show opens in Oakland, as it ended in Pittsburgh with more quizzical behavior which includes a cryogenic injury and a refusal to play unless he gets his way. Ep. 103 Steelers Emerging Players Shuffling the Deck?

Steelers Emerging Players Shuffling the Deck? At this time of year, all things are possible for all 32 teams in the NFL. As we watch Steeler training camp, there are some players who are playing above the line and may play roles beyond special teams. Ola Adeniyi has been dominant against the second team. He has come down to Earth a bit when he engaged with the first team, but there is something to his game...something to his effort... that seems to spell depth at edge rusher. Out of nowhere comes Kameron Kelly, Dallas Cowboy and AAF castoff. Kelly started 40 games for San Diego State, over that span he started at three different positions — slot cornerback, free safety, and boundary cornerback, Interestingly during his time with the San Diego Fleet in the AAF, Kelly played wide receiver. His window of opportunity presented itself wit Sean Davis taking the sideline with an injury Mike Tomlin pits Devin Bush and Benny Snell in backs-on-backers with both players flashing some tantalizing possibilities. Not to be outdone, a couple of silverbacks reared up in camp this week with Cam Heyward and Al Villanueva getting into a tussle. Is this a sign of the motivation permeating the entire lineup? Many of the key veterans are getting spelled this week as Tomlin seems to be planning to deliver an intact starting lineup for the first game of the season. Apparently Ben is in love with football again, more evidence that this team is focused on playing up to its potential in 2019. Will Rudolph or Dobbs emerge as the #2 QB and does Devlin Hodges have a chance to make this roster? Steelers QB Horse Race

As if watching the Steelers isn’t stressful enough, as Outpost-ers, we had to watch the NFL Game Pass version of the Steelers-Chiefs, featuring the Kansas City broadcast crew of Ari Wolfe, Todd McShay and Trent Green, who apparently did their homework on this game in the broadcast truck during the rain delay. Then they put it over the edge with a migraine-inducing, quarter-long interview with KC GM Brett Veach. My bad for keeping the volume above zero.

The Steelers starters got a lot of reps early in this second pre-season game. They showed a little rust, but got rumbling in the second quarter.

Mason Rudolph started the game protected by a largely, first-string offensive line. Four series of futility were rewarded with an 85 yard drive, culminating in a Jayson Samuels 14 yard scamper for a TD with Mason going 7-8.

Repeating his success against Tampa Bay, Joshua Dobbs hit James Washington for a 40 yard reception in his first drive. Unfortunately, the drive sputtered with Dobbs’ pass from the 6th sailed over Deonte Johnson into the awaiting hands of Chris Ward who returned it 49 yards. The good news? Dobbs made the tackle.

Thankfully, James Conner took off where he finished last year, gaining 28 yards on 6 carries. Jaylen Samuels showed the sophomore effect, running for 26 yards on 4 carries.

James Washington continued impressing, grabbing 4 passes for 78 yards, one of them a leaping grab on the sideline as well as the aforementioned 40 reception from J. Dobbs.

The defense dislodged three fumbles from the Chiefs, recovering all of theme while holding Patrick Mahomes to 2 of 5 passing.

Bud Dupree busted free for 2 sacks, while knocking down a pass and hitting the QB three times. Is this the new Bud?
