We send our condolences to the Rooney family who lost matriarch Patricia - wife of Dan Sr., mother of AR II - who passed away this week at 88. She was another pillar in a family who built and maintained a team with integrity and pride.

Ben Roethlisberger: "I don’t care bout my pay at all this year!” With $40m of cap hit kicked down the road until it reached a dead end in 2021, Ben says he want to play, even at a financial cost. A lot of pieces need to come together to make this Rubik's Cube work, but this is the biggest piece.

What about the blockbuster Goff-Stafford trade?! Goff moves north shackled with an enormous contract while Stafford travels to SoCal for a potential Super Bowl run for the first time in his career.

Steelers Outpost Podcast - Steelers Strangle Jaguars

Steelers Strangle Jaguars

Were we worried about this game with the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars? If you were around in 2017, yeah. You'd be worried too. Even with Jaguars coming out of the tunnel with a QB playing in his third NFL game.

The Steelers finally take care of business. When they have a 10 point spread on the road, now THAT's the time to worry. But this turned out to be the second yawner (was anyone awake in the third quarter) in a row.

What's new to say? Certainly not the offensive play calling. Why is Benny Snell the go to guy with the ball inside the 5 yard line. Why are we running on 2nd and long, let alone 3rd and long?

While we're not seeing Ben the Bomber of old, he's making it happen with an armamentarium replete with deadly weapons. Diontae Johnson broke the 100 yard mark for the second game in a row. Chase Claypool came within one TD (10) of the all-time Steeler record for a rookie.

James Conner exceeded 6 yards per carry on his way to 89 yards.

But it was the magnificent defense that held Jacksonville to 3 points, which came on the first drive. The Jaguars would only see the Steeler side of the field once more in the entire game.

Minkah Fitzpatrick and Terrell Edmunds turned on their Luton Radars, picking him for two INTs each. While the Bud Dupree and Stephon Tuitt extended the Steeler consecutive game sack streak to 67.

Tune into this podcast as we contemplate the disrespect for the Steelers 10 game winning streak.

Steelers Outpost Podcast - Steelers 2022 QB Controversy

Steelers 2022 QB Controversy

QBs in the News

Andy Dalton, recently released by the Cincinnati Bengals, was picked up by the Dallas Cowboys to backup Day Prescott. We talk about whether he would have been a preferable backup to Ben given his reasonable $3m salary.

Jameis Winston signed with the New Orleans Saints for an unfathomable $1.1m. What's the strategy behind that and why didn't any other teams take advantage of this opportunity (including the Steelers)?

And what is the Green Bay Packers strategy, picking Jordan Love in the first round? Are we going to see a reprise of the Brett Favre situation with Aaron Rogers? What are some possible landing spots for him if the Packers and he decide to part ways?

Juju's Departure

In one of his Asked and Answered columns, Ed Bouchette opines that JuJu Smith-Schuster, Alejandro Villanueva nor James Conner are likely to be on the roster post 2020. We talk about this prediction as well as the reasons for the animosity directed at JuJu by Steelers fans.

Claypool vs Mims

Denzel Mims was on the board when the Steelers chose Chase Claypool, but slid to the NY Jets. Both of these guys can burn, but many "experts" gave the edge to Mims. What did the Steelers see in Claypool (or not see in Mims)?

Duck Calling

Joey of Barstool Sports interviewed Devlin "Duck" Hodges to talk about his experience on the Steelers, his ascension to starting QB and his relationship with Ben.

Steelers Outpost Podcast - Ep. 040 Killer B's: Commitment & Cohesion
play

06/04/18 • 21 min

Headlines OTA and Injuries Killer B's OTA and Injuries Jerald Hawkins' and Jake McGee's season is over....even before OTA are done. Careers that were always tentative at best. Have the missed their last chance? Hawkins and McGee were undone in the Official Team Activities, known as OTAs. What is the value of these practices? Are they a chance to ramp up by teaching basics, learn the schemes and socialize the team? Or do they just widen the window of risk, exposing your stars to potential injuries? Killer B's Will Le'Veon's strategy (aka the same thing he did last year) work was well as it didn't last year? We talk about Le'Veon's new song. What is the message in his musings? That he's not valued? That we don't love him? Seems so. So....Ben? AB? AB: "The only way to get better is to come to OTAs". Maybe he meant that you only had to go to the first two. Or maybe he means that he only goes to practice if Ben goes to practice. And...oh yeah...Ben is on holiday with the fam. Couldn't have timed that better Big Guy? Steelers Outpost Podcast - Ep. 32 Golden Parachute

Ep. 32 Golden Parachute

04/09/18 • 31 min

We’re between the combine and the draft. There's been so much conjecture about who’s going where and when. Sam Darnold was the projected as the #1 pick to the Browns. Now it seems that Josh Allen may have supplanted him as Cleveland’s target. Of course none of this is proven fact, but if it it's true, it kind of explains an organization with a 1-23 record over the past two years. Jordan Mailata's pro day in Tampa FL last week makes for a very interesting story. Mailata is a 20-year-old of Samoan origin who's been playing rugby in Australia. He's a 6'8" 346 pound beast who ran over his Lilliputian rugby compatriots like Sherman Tank. He's been working out at IMG in Florida to learn the offensive tackle position. The big man has some speed (4.7) so someone is going to be interested in this project. Headlines Odds and Ends Steelers sign Berhe Steelers re-sign Chris Boswell Should Steelers trade up in the draft? Weekly draft preview: Tight Ends Steelers sign Nat Berhe Berhe is known as “The Missile” but we've renamed him “The Golden Parachute” as he most likely will replace Robert Golden as a core element on special teams. Berhe is a free agent safety signed to a one year contract. Originally drafted by the Giants in 2015 out of San Diego State, he's been a special teams ace, leading that unit in tackles in 2017. Of note, Berhe is the first Eritrean-American to play in the NFL. Steelers re-sign Boswell Not surprisingly, kicker Chris Boswell has signed his second round restricted free agent tender for $2.9 million. Boswell made his first Pro Bowl last season after hitting over 92% of his field goals in the regular season and finishing as the 4th highest scorer in the NFL. Boswell also set a career-high with 4 field goals made from 50 or more yards away. Should Steelers trade up in the draft? Tony Serino of Locked on Steelers asked on Twitter if the Steelers should go ALL IN and trade up for a defensive impact player? Noting that the Steelers haven't done a great job of developing defensive players well or quickly, Steelers Outpost has a resounding ABSOLUTELY! Tight Ends We look at the following draft prospects: Mike Gesicki (PENN ST) Hayden Hurst (SOUTH CAROLINA) Ian Thomas (INDIANA) Dallas Godert (S DAKOTA ST) Mark Andrews (OKLA) We are striving to make this show as informative and entertaining as possible. Steelers Outpost Podcast - Rust Bowl: Steelers Vanquish the Browns
play

09/14/17 • 44 min

Click to download. S T E E L E R S 21 vs Browns 18 What were you expecting, a blowout? Certainly we expected this offense with a top-tier QB, an offensive line that is among the best in the league and what are arguably the premier wide receiver and running back in the NFL that we would see more than 14 points of production... and we certainly didn't think that production would come from an under-valued tight end. So maybe it not the overwhelming display of firepower that we had hoped to see, but it was a victory and we started to see the machine pick up momentum as the game went on. One theme of the game is an appropriate one for two teams from steel towns: Rust. Although some guys were ready, many, including Ben, seemed to need a little time under live fire to find their rhythm. See how we graded out the coaches and positions and let us know how you saw it. ~ ~ ~ T H E M E S ~ ~ ~ Now presenting...THE PITTSBURGH ANTONIO BROWNS PENALTIES. 13 for 144yds WOW. 3 personal fouls, 2 very dumb. 08/11/19 • 59 min

Steelers Go To Washington Steelers 30 Tampa Bay 28 Our prayers go out to the family of Steelers wide receiver coach Darryl Drake who passed away on Sunday morning, August 11. He was 62 years old. No cause of death was given. Coach Drake leaves behind his wife, Sheila, three daughters, and several grandchildren. Expectations of a quality performance were low, but this was an entertaining game. Frustratingly, but not surprisingly, this was a highly-flagged game with a combined 24 penalties for 186 yards.\ The Main Events for us was watching the ascension of James Washington and Devin Bush’s debut. This guys in NFL ready as evidenced by his 10, first half tackles. QB play was sharp, with Dobbs, Rudolph and Hodges showing poise, even when experiencing pressure. You need look no further than the score to see the offense was moving the ball. The guys we hoped to perform well, generally met the bar they set in training camp, although a couple of guys are going to have to firm up their play in the upcoming games. We were especially happy to see Boz go 2-2 in field goals, hitting one for 47 yards. The Antonio Brown show opens in Oakland, as it ended in Pittsburgh with more quizzical behavior which includes a cryogenic injury and a refusal to play unless he gets his way.
