Stay Off My Operating Table

Stay Off My Operating Table

Dr. Philip Ovadia

I was a morbidly obese heart surgeon.
Throughout high school, college, med school and surgical training, I followed the U.S. dietary guidelines for both diet and exercise.
Yet nothing I did kept the weight off. I just kept getting bigger and bigger.
Each day in the operating theater I would split open the chests of people just like me. I knew I was heading for the operating table myself if I didn't find solutions that worked.
In 2016, I finally found a way to lose 100 pounds and keep it off.
Now - in addition to doing heart surgery - I work to help people just like me get healthy, lose the weight and keep it off.
I'm Dr. Philip Ovadia, the rebel M.D. and cardiac surgeon who is working to keep people off my operating table.

Stay Off My Operating Table - Lymphedema Victim Siobhan Huggins: Health & Hope thru Keto - #63
play

11/01/22 • 76 min

Siobhan Huggins grew up with a negative self-image. At 18, she was obese and developed depression. Whenever she tried a new diet, her depression symptoms would get worse. Later on, she was diagnosed with lipedema.

Her mom encouraged her to learn more about the ketogenic diet. She decided to do keto strictly for 2 months. The changes she experienced - from losing weight to improving her mental health - made her stick with it. This gave her the drive to research more about its benefits.

Siobhan knew how the ketogenic diet became instrumental to the improvement of her physical health and mental wellness. The presence of the keto community reminded her that she was not alone in this journey and that kept her going. In this episode, Siobhan shares that amidst her obesity, depression, and lipedema, her choice to do a carnivore diet and the support system of the community contributed big time to where she is now, and she continues to give back to help others too.

Stay Off My Operating Table - Dr. Kwajo: Poor Metabolic Health Means Poor ICU outcomes - #59
play

10/04/22 • 62 min

Dr. Kwadwo Kyeremanteng wants you not to end up in the ICU.

An ICU doctor and a department head at the Ottawa Hospital, Dr. Kwadwo knows metabolic disease is a massive driver of poor outcomes. Studies even established the link between poor metabolic health and COVID outcomes. But what do we do to treat that? When doctors focus primarily on sick care, they hardly ask anymore why the patient landed there in the first place.
And that's what we need. We have to talk about the root cause to find the solutions.
The inefficiency of the healthcare system prompted him to start his podcast "Solving Healthcare" which aims to empower healthcare workers to think out of the box. There's always a way to provide better care. The patients deserve that. Maybe the needle is yet to be moved, but the message is getting there.
Quick Guide:

The year was 2004. It was the year Kevin Pho - a board-certified internal medicine physician - launched his blog. Blogging physicians are still uncommon. Sometimes in the exam room, patients would tell him how helpful his blog posts are.

Medical professionals must be present where the patients are, even online. Kevin's platform, KevinMD.com, continues to be the space for health care practitioners and patients alike to share their perspectives and stories.

Stay Off My Operating Table - Nick Norwitz: What links the SAD diet & metabolic health? - #56
play

09/13/22 • 63 min

Nick Norwitz was diagnosed with osteoporosis in his late teens. Not long after, he developed gut problems and ulcerative colitis. At one point in his early 20's, he ended up in the ICU with a heart rate the same as his age.
Who would have thought that this young man used to be a healthy, active guy who ran three-hour marathons? While lying in ICU, he realized he had 3 options:

  1. live a horrible life
  2. die
  3. figure things out for himself.

He chose to take responsibility for his own health. He experimented with lifestyle and dietary interventions. The Ketogenic diet improved his symptoms and his inflammatory markers dropped to their lowest level. These effects sparked his interest in nutrition and metabolic health. He now pursues medical studies at Harvard Medical School and continues to advocate metabolic health.
In this episode, Nick talks about his journey to healing, being "metabolically woke," and how he wants science to be more accessible to people.
