Start to Stop Toddler Breastfeeding

Start to Stop Toddler Breastfeeding

Jenna Wolfe, Certified Lactation Counselor (CBI) and Certified Purejoy Parent Coach

Start to Stop Toddler Breastfeeding by Jenna Wolfe is dedicated to supporting moms breastfeeding and weaning their older babies, toddlers and preschoolers, and those who are hoping to make it that far and want to set themselves up for success.

You wanted to breastfeed for years, not months, but I bet you didn’t expect gymnurstrics, skin crawling with every latch, nipple twiddling, meltdowns, and still having sleepless nights. In this podcast you will find everything you need to extended breastfeed, full-term wean and even tandem feed without losing your mind (or your toddler’s trust). We will also cover nutrition, supporting healthy emotional and social development in your child, and so much more.

You will find fireside chats with incredible experts like Krystyn Parks of Feeding Made Easy, Samantha Radford of Evidence-Based Mommy, and more. You will leave every episode feeling like you have found your people and have a new-found confidence in your breastfeeding and parenting.

If you are looking to make some changes in your breastfeeding relationship with your older baby or child, make sure to download the free “Making Changes” communication guide & cheat sheet so that you can say “no” to the feed while saying “yes” to the need.

The shirt-pulling, screaming, and demands to breastfeed have gotten to the point that you find yourself dreading them before your toddler has even thought about breastfeeding again.
When they do, inevitably "ask" to breastfeed, the fear of reinforcing all of their bad behaviors reverberates through your body as you quickly try to decide if you will hold the boundary; or give in to their demands this time.
...and the guilt that comes from the fact that they "act" so poorly can be crushing. Did you cause this behavior with your bad parenting? Will they end up as disrespectful teenagers? Will the choices you make today define their character as adults?
Man - the pressure that mounts in those moments is crushing!
But what if there is another way?
In this final podcast episode of season 1 of Start to Stop Toddler Breastfeeding I break down:

  • What respectful behaviour is and isn't
  • The truth about the magic words: "Please" & "Thank You"
  • Rewards, punishments & reinforcing behaviours
  • How to support your child in the moment
  • How to raise an empathetic, respectful human who has integrity
  • How to support YOURSELF in the moment

Engorgement, clogged ducts & mastitis are words all breastfeeding moms are familiar with.
They can be scary & overwhelming, particularly at the beginning of your breastfeeding journey, but can pop up throughout the duration of time that you are breastfeeding - mainly when significant changes are happening in your life, including night weaning & complete weaning.
To further complicate things, there has been a fundamental shift in the way that science and leading lactation organizations and experts understand these conditions - this has resulted in the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine completely overhauling their Mastitis Proctol. This means that the approach both lactating people & those who support them take when addressing engorgement, clogged ducts & mastitis has changed, or needs to change.
This is relevant to those who are early in their breastfeeding experience, of course, but it’s ALSO relevant to those who have been breastfeeding for a year or more. You are more likely to be supporting friends & family members when they are encountering these things, and you are more likely to be using methods you were told to use when you face them yourself - but those methods are likely based on an outdated understanding of what engorgement, clogged ducts & mastitis are and could be creating MORE issues than they are solving.
In this episode I break down:
-> The big change
-> Each condition in the Mastitis Spectrum of Conditions
-> Support for general treatment & prevention
-> The role stress plays (and what to do about it)

Your tongue posture (or your child's!) could be sabotaging all of your attempts at making breastfeeding & weaning an enjoyable experience.
Continuing last week's interview - Jenna and Jenny discuss the importance of orofacial myofunctional therapy for children and adults.
In this partition of the interview, we go over various symptoms that may indicate the need for "tongue physiotherapy" (Aka - Myofunctional therapy!) such as sleep issues, mouth breathing, clenching and grinding, (in adults) and messy eating, picky eating and frequent night waking in kids.
We talk about how your child's quick "clip" of a tongue tie as a newborn might need revisiting and covers the benefits of bodywork and massages to release tension in the facial muscles.

Show Notes:

  • Symptoms that may indicate the need for orofacial myofunctional therapy: sleep issues, mouth breathing, clenching and grinding, messy eating, sleep disturbances.
  • The role of tongue ties and the importance of proper stretching and care after a release.
  • The benefits of bodywork and massages in releasing tension in the facial muscles.
  • How tongue function affects overall health, facial changes, pain relief, and improved jaw function.
  • Compensatory muscle movements and their impact on facial pain and TMJ issues.
  • Goals of therapy: helping children sleep better and adults alleviate pain.
  • The transformative impact of simple exercises on quality of life.

"Is it even POSSIBLE to leave your breastfed toddler for an entire night?
And if it is... do you have to wean?"

Or maybe none of that has ever felt appealing but you are feeling pressure from your partner to plan a getaway, or hearing that it's strange that you have never slept apart from your toddler.
Never fear, sweet mama!
In this episode, I cover 5 considerations you need to make before you plan a night away from your breastfed toddler.

Start to Stop Toddler Breastfeeding - 16: Your Boob-Addicted Toddler And the Toddler Breastfeeding Stress Cycle
play

05/09/23 • 24 min

FREE Instant Access Workshop: Steal my Essential Roadmap to Toddler Wean, Tandem Feed & Extended Breastfeed (without feeling like a human fidget toy, or pushing your kiddo away.)
Your toddler's boob addiction is actually a *GOOD* thing - AND there is a really good reason why it drives you nuts.
Your toddler is still waking frequently at night to breastfeed. You can’t leave them with anyone without an *epic* meltdown. You are embarrassed to take them to the park because of the amount of shirt-pulling that is likely to occur, and it seems everyone around you thinks you should have had this figured out already.
In our culture, all of those things are pretty “strange” for a toddler to be doing.
Because it’s strange, our brains immediately go to “bad”. Psychologically, we want to be like our peers. Practically, the standards we are used to measuring our child against (milestones, growth charts, etc.) are based on averages. “Kids that fall outside of the norm have something wrong with them” is an unconscious belief that is easy to develop.

Your toddler is addicted to your breast, and your only options are tough love or toughing it out. Or so you perceive....
But here is what your unconscious brain misses - it’s not your child with the problem. It’s the culture.

Now, I know that doesn’t seem to leave a lot of hope. You’re thinking: “I can’t change the culture, Jenna. Am I supposed to surrender to this chaos and hope that I survive until my child magically stops being a boob-monster?”

I promise you, there is an alternative to the “tough-love/toughing-it-out” conundrum.
You don’t have to force your child to do anything they aren’t ready for, *and* you don’t have to wait until they decide they are no longer going to scream “BOOB” as they dig their hands into your bra at your in-law’s thanksgiving table. (No? Just me?)
Despite what others around you might say, your child still being “addicted” to breastfeeding is a good thing.

Have you ever worried that boundaries around breastfeeding might be wrong or inappropriate?
It can feel like you are caught between 2 worlds:

  • One where sleep training is the norm, and breastfeeding beyond 6 or 12 months is said to be "more for the mom than the baby"
  • And another where "surrendering" to your child's needs is the ONLY way to parent, and refusing a feed for any reason is inherently problematic.

But what if there is a third option?
In this bonus episode, I sit down with my friend and colleague, Samantha Radford to talk about this nuanced subject with grace, humility, and humor.

Breastfeeding a toddler and a newborn... at the same time -> most people in the Western world think this is crazy.
And yet, I breastfed 2 kids (of different ages) for 3.5 years, and I hear from listeners all the time who are either doing it or considering it.
But, just like fertility & contraception while breastfeeding a toddler (and breastfeeding through pregnancy) there aren't many places to find support when you start out on your tandem nursing journey.
In this final part of the Tandem Feeding series I give you all the things I wish I would have known as a first time tandem feeding mom,
I cover:

  • The most commonly asked tandemfeeding questions
  • Preparing to tandem feed
  • Navigating the early days of tandem nursing (including positions & sleep)
  • Common challenges
  • Some benefits of tandem nursing.

Since I cover the topics from a top level perspective, I would love to hear from you about what areas you would like me to dive deeper into in the coming episodes!
