Splash Stories enjoyed a cracking chat with Jim Bob - front man of Carter USM - To celebrate his 12th solo studio album : – Thanks For Reaching Out - a stone cold masterpiece. • Featuring 38 minutes of pop, punk rock and devastatingly moving ballads.
The title track offers a feeling of hope and romance in an “effed up world”. With its Jam/Strange Town vibe and Terry Edwards (Madness, Higsons, Gallon Drunk, Holy Holy) on saxophone and trumpet, it’s a great opener and he declares, “This is my Long and Winding Road, my God Only Knows, my Up the Junction, typed up on a bus and sent from my iPhone”.
Album released June 30 via Cherry Red Records on 30 June 2023
The album is available on vinyl, CD Cassette & digital platforms. The vinyl is purple in a gatefold sleeve with a 2024 calendar and the CD version comes with a second disc ‘This is My Mixtape;’ a collection of cover versions recorded especially for the album. Jim Bob and his band The Hoodrats take on the Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel Mk.I song Sebastian, Are Friends Electric and song Country Comfort from Elton John’s Tumbleweed Connection. There’s also a great version of Geno that started as a tour bus singalong

Splash Stories dived in at the deep end with Katie Puckrik - dancer, performer, broadcaster writer and so much more besides. She danced in the 80's with Royal Ballet Punk Michael Clark, on the Pet Shop Boys tour in '91, hit UK notoriety hosting Channel 4’s The Word in the 1990s , created and hosted the British television talk show Pyjama Party and is now fronting The Lust For Life Album Tour on vocals joining Blondie drummer, Clem Burke, former Sex Pistol and punk pioneer, Glen Matlock on bass; Iggy Pop and David Bowie collaborator, Kevin Armstrong on guitar; Luis Correia, on second guitar and touring member of Heaven 17, Florence Sabeva on keyboards.

Ahead of the tour, a live version of Iggy’s ‘Neighbourhood Threat’ from the classic Lust For Life album recorded live at London’s Lexington has been released as a single.

Why Stephen Fry?
Unbelievable was on his ‘100years of the BBC’ happy mix (along with Dancing Queen and Mrs Robinson) but he was a fan way back before it was a global smash. We met him at an EMF gig at the Astoria in 1992 and he kindly agreed to appear on an EMF song in 1995, reading a dystopian poem about self-destruction on ‘Glass Smash Jack’ from our Cha Cha Cha album. The message of our new song ‘Hello People’ is about tolerance, who better then to verify the facts and emotions about immigration in the face of a flood of hate speech than the most intellectually rigorous and entertaining brain in the world and our very own National Treasure the great Stephen Fry.” - EMF.

The Hello People video features is a celebration: It features the faces of EMF’s fans. Dale Crover shares his Splash Story with myself and Diamond Dave and he's one hell of a laid back good humoured guy. He tells us he's fabulous ! He had a rough time of it sometime back having to undergo an emergency spinal surgery operation so that's good to hear. Not for the faint hearted but he's a Melvin right!

On tour with Ministry after the Pandemic led to two drummers on The Tarantula Heart album with influences by PIL's Flowers of Romance and a new way of working and putting the tracks together and having "really long songs on it." There's reminiscenses on Kiss Gene Simmons, Atlantic Records and a whole bunch of insights.

Crover mentioned he felt fortunate to work with King Buzzo whom he describes as "a great, idiosyncratic songwriter and a superb live performer". He added that working with Kurt Cobain, Mike Patton and Buzz had been great - all three knew what they wanted " I just sit at the back, add a bit of direction and help steer the ship."

Splash Stories kicks off 2025 with Crispin Gray, former guitarist and songwriter for Daisy Chainsaw renowned for their UK top twenty hit ’Love Your Money’ (which also appeared in an episode of Beavis & Butt-Head in the USA), Queenadreena and guitarist for Portuguese artist Starsha Lee.

His latest band Alien Airforce released the mighty fine and poignantly titled single Good Luck World (I Think You're Going To Need It) on Easy Action Records in the spring of 2024 and we felt it was topical to talk to Crispin as we plunge head long into 2025.

Splash Stories had a super charged chat with The Futureheads vocalist Barry Hyde from his pub/music venue The Peacock, that he opened with Dan Donnelly (Celtic Social Club/The Wonder Stuff/The Levellers) in Sunderland's City centre

Futureheads - Took their name from the Flaming Lips album Hit to Death in the Future Head shot to critical acclaim in 2004

Their sound is a brash and brave mix of post-punk and three/four part harmonies their memorable cover of Kate Bush’s ‘Hounds of Love’ is superbly crafted.Their sound embraces stop-start dynamics in the rhythmic ‘Decent Days and Nights’, punky abrasion on songs like ‘The Beginning of the Twist’ and tight harmonies which they later took to the max on their entirely acapella fifth album Rant.

Splash Stories welcomes Chris Connelly talking from his home in Chicago for a memorable musical memoir amongst the streets the guts and the character of Edinburgh. His latest 8 track album 'The Lives and Loves of the Serial Homesick, Vol. 1' is a paean to his city- and a beautiful and profound one at that - capturing the essence of his love for it through his music his art and his heartfelt lyricism.. Each album comes with its own drawing created by Connelly himself.
In Connelly's words : " the album is rich with strong feelings of then and now, memories that may or may not be accurate, locations, events, friends and lovers. I want the listener to walk with me quietly through endless days and nights, through the streets of Edinburgh in the early 1980s, over the tenement rooftops, up the hills with cans of Red Stripe and a well stoked hash pipe. Sitting in the Wee Red Bar, Bannermans, The Gilded Balloon, or the Royal Circus. Playing endless nights of music with my beloved Fini Tribe, dancing at the Hoochie Coochie Club.
I miss it badly and have never felt at home anywhere except Edinburgh, where my soul continues to walk the New Town streets and climb the hills,"
