Dennis Kibbe teaches Computer Information Systems at Mesa Community College in Arizona.
In the spring of 2020, Dennis and Summer touched base about the rapid switch to online teaching and learning during the outbreak of COVID19. An expert in teaching using technology, Dennis had a lot of excellent advice for his fellow teachers about teaching online, and doing it well.
Dennis suggests his students use the Pomodoro technique to help them to focus getting work done for classes. It's a tried and true method that writers use all the time. But students in any class can benefit from this approach to manage their time.
Looking for a good book? Dennis suggests The Science of Getting Rich, which inspired the film The Secret.

1.45. It's Time to Breathe (with Melanie Ho and David Attis)
Today's interview is with two experts from EAB: Education Technology, Services, and Research in Washington, D.C.
Melanie Ho is Senior Vice President of Research and David Attis is a managing director. They've known each other for several years, this is their first time being interviewed together!
Lately, Melanie has been thinking a lot about the impact of COVID19, grief, and isolation. As difficult as it is, she's heartened to discover new ways to connect with family, friends, and even strangers! "It allows us to face our common humanity" with people we do not know.
David feels privileged to work from home, since much of his job in the years required him to travel constantly. He misses meeting with people face to face and being in new places, but he finds he enjoys managing his time virtually.
David's watershed moment was while he was traveling in the second week of March 2020. From California, he called his wife and told her he was cutting his trip short. She immediately went to the grocery store and for months, neither of them left their neighborhood. Melanie sensed things were changing that week, as well. "Honestly," she chuckled, "we thought we were being paranoid." But then, all of a sudden, her entire team of researchers had to pivot from their established projects to looking at education through a COVID lens.
In this challenging time of COVID19, you may be wondering "what can I really do?" Melanie and David urge us to maintain and build relationships, "even it that means getting through a little less content," because teachers and faculty are so critical when it comes to the wellbeing of our students.

1.47. Compassion and Empathy are Infinite (with Dr. Stevie Stanford)
Dr. Stevie Stanford is a nationally sought-after psychologist and expert on trauma and addiction. Whether you're a teacher or a student, Dr. Stanford knows this period of social isolation is going to be difficult. She doesn't want you to feel guilt or shame as you're working through the COVID-19 era. "Pain is pain. We all have feelings."
For some of us, school is a place of respite. The expectations are clear, the setting is safe, and we have regular access to all kinds of resources. In some cases, it's where students can find a healthy meal and a supportive mentor. So when we find ourselves in an unprecedented historical moment of isolation, it may seem like our resources have disappeared.
In particular, Dr. Stanford points out that "there is nothing more dangerous than isolation" when it comes to people struggling with addiction. But the good news is, there are resources and ways to reach out.
For students, she hopes you ask for help and stay in contact with your teachers. For faculty, she encourages us to know our boundaries, and exercise vulnerability.
Like all of us, Dr. Stanford is experimenting with her "new normal" work attire. She's really starting amp up her earring game. Today, she's wearing a pair of yellow and green earrings, made by a pre-med student on an extended COVID-19 break. "I think it's something that all students can heed. Oftentimes, we're reading books and doing pragmatic, logical stuff, but tapping into that creative side can help solidify the information and help you to feel like you're filling your own cup."
