Hobbies and How I Got Started Carving Duck Decoys

Hobbies and How I Got Started Carving Duck Decoys
Locations: Utah and Idaho
Hobbies have always been a money drain and a release for me. I have a lot of hobbies and a few of them I am passionate about. When I was in college, my friend Jason Randolph introduced me to duck hunting over decoys with dogs and I have been forever thankful. I love ducks, dogs, and decoys. I soon began a collection of decoys for my own decoy spread and then began trying to make my own birds. Thanks to the DecoyCarvingForum (now a group on Facebook) and personal instruction from Tom Matus, I was able to get my birds into much better shape than my first cork goldeneye decoy.

The Ups and Downs of Archery Elk Hunting and Nancy’s Biggest Bull Part 2
Locations: Wyoming
Since becoming a Wyoming resident and marrying Nancy over 5 years ago, we have been pursuing elk. They are a magnificent animal and superb table fare. Nancy was skeptical when I went archery hunting for elk the first year and came home with a cow elk later that evening. She was shocked. She started shooting archery and soon was chasing elk with her bow. Following breast cancer, she struggled to get her draw weight back up to the needed poundage so has been pursuing elk with a crossbow these last few years. Many missed opportunities and frustrations later, Nancy tagged her very first elk. The following year we put in for a limited entry unit in Wyoming and drew out. 2020 was a crazy year all around but Nancy her biggest bull elk to date and it was an experience neither of us will ever forget! Archery elk hunting is not what you see on social media and YouTube. There are days when nothing comes together, or you do not make good decisions and mess up your chance. Always remember that the worst hunt can become the best in just 5 seconds. Keep at it, stay positive, and sometimes everything comes together. The pursuit is exciting, the pack out and butchering is pure work, and the meals and memories are exquisite.

Chatting with My Good Friend JJ (Jason Randolph) about Guiding and Life: Part 2
Locations: Utah, Nebraska, and Wyoming
I was fortunate to meet and guide with JJ starting in 1997 out of Park City, UT. We have been friends ever since. We have been able to share many days on the water and in the duck blind. There are so many stories we have this will be a 2-part podcast and in all reality, I will have to sit down with him again sometime because I already remember more stories that we still haven’t even talked about.
JJ is an amazing guide and friend and a mediocre golfer lol, but if you get the chance you should float the North Platte river with him for some great fishing or hunt waterfowl with WYOBRASKA Waterfowl. It is hard to get JJ because he is booked most days, but I promise if you do you will have a great day even when the fish or birds do not cooperate. Even if you cannot hunt or fish with JJ, his guides and locations are outstanding! Get out there and enjoy some time on the water/blind with him.

Bucket Lists

Bucket Lists: Places, Activities, and Experiences
Locations: Everywhere
When I talk about my bucket list it includes so much that I was once told, “You can’t call it a bucket list because buckets have bottoms.” Well that is the truth. Once I accomplish checking off an item on the list I am off to do the next thing. Often, I am planning the next trip and experience while on an adventure. From checking off all the cutthroat species in the Western United States, to catching as many state fish as possible, to visiting a new country, or seeing something new, I love having new experiences.
My wife learned quickly that regardless of where we go, I am going to try and fish and explore. I have done it my whole life and don’t plan on slowing down. I hope this podcast inspires you to go try something new or start planning to check something off of your own bucket list. Life is short and we don’t have time to do it all, so go get started and Live Your Stories!!

First Turkey Hunt
So, There I Am...

My First Turkey Hunt
Location: Polk County, Wisconsin, USA
April 2011
My first turkey was easier than it should have been. I had some great teachers and I discuss some things that a turkey hunter should consider when using calls, decoys, and setting up. As always it was fun and I hope that you can enjoy the adventure along with me.
For those who are interested, you can get your turkey tags through the Game & Fish in most states. Some have over-the-counter (OTC) options but many are by lottery draw only. Visit your local Game and Fish web site for opportunities near you. If you have never been hunting and would like to, first step is to get your Hunter Safety Course finished up. Some states offer a Mentorship as a possibility. Another great option is to contact the First Hunt Foundation. It is a great organization that is to help those interested in learning to hunt. I also highly recommend Volume 1 & 2 of The Complete Guide to Hunting, Butchering, and Cooking Wild Game books by Steven Rinella. Another outstanding resource is Hank Shaw and his books as well as Hunt Angler Gardener Cook group on Facebook.

Shopping, Being Sick, and Talking Squirt Into Helping Me Gut a Deer

Shopping with Mom, Being Sick, and Talking Squirt into Helping Me Gut a Mule Deer with My Little Sister Ashli Telling Her Side of the Story
Location: Mostly Utah, USA
Fall 1991ish
One of the things that I really do not like is shopping. As a child I would do everything I could to avoid going to the city and shopping. In this podcast I talk about some of the ways I would make it so people wouldn’t take me. I also talk about how I would fake sick to stay home but on one occasion I was actually sick and had a dilemma when a nice mule deer buck was grazing next to my rifle target at 100 yards when the muzzleloader season was on. I then had the problem of getting it back to the house and gutted but was extremely ill. My little sister Ashli was home with me that day. I talked her into helping me to her never-ending regret. I tell my version of the story and then invited her over to tell her version. The only real discrepancy is in Ashli’s version my mother comes home.
My mother would like it to be known she was not a terrible mother. She worries people will think she wasn’t a good mother. Nothing could be farther from the truth! My mother was amazing and raised my siblings and I when my father was on cruise. I can’t imagine the difficulties military wives face raising kids, let alone a child such as myself. I am very thankful for the love and patience of my mother. Without her who knows where I would be.

My Mixed Breed Dog Chester, Merganser Jerky, Training Mistakes, and Dog Backpacks
Locations: Utah and Wyoming
I have always been a sucker for dogs. When I was a sophomore in college I made the mistake of stopping at the animal shelter and found Chester. Chester was WAY more expensive than I would have ever guessed and it took a lot of training to get him to do the things I wanted him to do but I am forever grateful that I was his human for all those years. We had a great time chasing birds and seemed to have an affinity for mergansers. Get out there and live your stories!!

Chuck, Brook Trout, Poison Ivy, Turkey Hunting, Taylor, and the Shaking Tree
Locations: Minnesota and Wisconsin
Spending time in the Mid-West after college was a wonderful experience. I spent the first few years focused on all of the things that I hadn’t been able to do in the western states, whitetail deer and turkey hunting, fishing for musky, walleye, and sturgeon, and finding all sorts of new mushrooms and wild edibles. This podcast is a story about a work friend named Chuck and my first experience with poison ivy. We fish for brook trout near the Kinnikinnick River and have a great time. I also talk about hunting turkeys with my stepson Taylor with a story about a shaking tree.
If you are looking for equipment check out Mills Fleet Farm. I really enjoyed working for them and the friendships I made there are some of the best I have ever had.

Another Hobby: Brazilian Paper Hot Air Balloons (If you do this be careful!)
Locations: Utah and Wisconsin
I am weird about my hobbies; they have always been cyclical with me. I would do one and dive in feet first. I tend to buy all the stuff you need and then I get excited about the next one and dive in again. It has created a lifelong love of learning and exploring new things. In the mid 90’s (yup I am that old now), I was in Brazil on a church mission. We were teaching a great guy who was retired Federal Police. He taught us about making these paper balloons. It is illegal to do in Brazil because of the fire danger...so of course I jumped in. More of a belly flop at the start but they got way better as I practiced and met others who enjoy it.
