Six Pixels of Separation Podcast - SPOS #724 - Simon Sinek On Great Revealers And Infinite Games
play

05/24/20 • 56 min

Welcome to episode #724 of Six Pixels of Separation.

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #724 - Host: Mitch Joel. This is how Simon Sinek's website begins: "We imagine a world in which the vast majority of people wake up inspired, feel safe wherever they are and end the day fulfilled by the work they do." Simon is an unshakable optimist. He believes in a bright future and our ability to build it together - even during this crisis. Described as “a visionary thinker with a rare intellect,” Simon has devoted his professional life to help advance a vision of the world that does not yet exist. Simon is the author of multiple bestselling books including, Start With Why, Leaders Eat Last, Together is Better, and his latest, The Infinite Game. Simon may be best known for popularizing the concept of "why," which he described in his first TED Talk in 2009. That talk went on to become the second most watched TED Talk of all time, and is still in the top five with over 50 million views. His interview on millennials in the workplace broke the internet in 2016. With over 80 million views in its first week, it has now been viewed hundreds of millions times. This led to Simon being YouTube’s fifth most searched term in 2017. Simon is very busy with his live online classes and rethinking how to work beyond speaking on big stages for conferences, organizations and other live events. With that, there is no one else that I wanted to speak to on the topic of the day, how to be a great leader and how to live with optimism. Enjoy the conversation...

Michael’s work has been spotlighted in major media outlets and his TED Talk, How To Buy Happiness, has racked up close to 5 million views. He’s also known for his co-authored book, Happy Money - The Science of Happier Spending. Now, he's back with his latest book, The Ritual Effect. In our conversation, Michael explores the impact of rituals in our daily lives and the broader implications for businesses and society. Michael explains that while habits are the repetitive tasks we perform automatically, rituals are those same tasks imbued with intention and meaning. This shift from a “habitual” mindset to a “ritual” mindset can transform mundane activities into something much more significant. We touch on the distinction between habits and rituals, and how rituals, unlike habits, add depth and color to our lives. Michael shares insights from The Ritual Effect, where he uncovers how rituals help heal communities, mark life’s major transitions, and even drive sports fans to a frenzy. Michael emphasizes the importance of understanding different perspectives and the role of rituals in creating a sense of purpose and connection. We also discuss the practical aspects of rituals and how they can be used to enhance both personal and professional lives. Michael's research shows that rituals, whether they're as simple as the way we savor a beverage or as complex as family traditions during holidays, bring surprising satisfaction and enjoyment. The Ritual Effect is a compelling reminder of the power of intention-filled acts and their impact on human behavior and our business. Whether you're looking to add more meaning to your daily routines or understand the deeper significance of rituals and how they impact your work, Michael's insights offer a fresh perspective on how we can live and work more purposefully. Six Pixels of Separation Podcast - SPOS #883 - Seth Godin On Strumming The Song Of Significance
play

06/11/23 • 58 min

Welcome to episode #883 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast.

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #883. I could not tell you how many times Seth Godin has been a guest on this show. I don't say this to brag. I state this, because he has (truly) influenced everything from my thinking about work and the future, to how I've built worked on my own professional development and career (more on that here: Dear Seth Godin). As soon as I caught wind that he was publishing a new book, The Song Of Significance, I locked in a time for us to not only discuss this incredible book/manifesto about what it means to be human, to be a part of a team, and to make work that really matters, but to also drill down into how the world is changing (artificial intelligence, politics, work from home, being an entrepreneur and more). For those who don't know, Seth is an oracle. He has been sparking minds and inspiring people to level up for over three decades. His daily blog, a beacon of wisdom and insight, has been my constant in the ever-changing digital landscape for more than ten years (when he first started publishing). Seth is an artist with words. He's the author of 20 bestselling books, translated into nearly 40 languages. Also worth noting is his Carbon Almanac project. And Seth's journey isn't a straight path. It's filled with intriguing detours and exciting projects. In 2015, Seth brought to life the altMBA, a transformative 30-day workshop that's changed countless lives. It's part of Akimbo, an independently owned B corp, crafting innovative ways to learn. Seth's online courses, including The Marketing Seminar and several on Udemy, have been taken by over 60,000 people. He's a member of the Guerrilla Marketing Hall of Fame, the Direct Marketing Hall of Fame, and most recently, the Marketing Hall of Fame. Seth's free ebooks on the placebo effect and education are worth a read, and his five TED Talks are a must-watch. So, with that... let's get into his new book and the changing world of work, building a business worth working for and the future. Enjoy the conversation...

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #884. Meet Dr. Kelly Richmond Pope, our guide through the shadowy labyrinth of financial fraud and the newest rockstar in the world of accounting (and yes, those words can go together). Kelly isn't your typical number cruncher - she's a bona fide detective of financial misdeeds, a virtuoso in the symphony of numbers, and a professor of Forensic Accounting at DePaul University. Gaining recognition from the AICPA and the CPA Practice Advisor, she's been listed among the top 25 most powerful women in accounting, and her expertise? Sniffing out the faintest whiff of financial fraud, dissecting corporate culture, and assessing compliance systems designed to tackle internal control challenges. With her knack for storytelling, she turned her research on executive misconduct into a fascinating documentary, All The Queen's Horses, a deep dive into the largest municipal fraud in U.S. history. But it doesn't stop at films. Her TED Talk, How Whistle-blowers Shape History, has hit over 1.6 million views, helping organizations and individuals appreciate the power of internal whistleblowing. The story gets juicier, with her new book, Fool Me Once, she pulls back the curtain on the trillion-dollar fraud industry. Filled with tales of fraudsters, their victims, and the whistleblowers who dare to expose them. Her aim? To make fraud more relatable, and by doing so, protect us and our companies from falling into the fraudster's trap. This is a new way to think about what it really means to "do the right thing." Welcome to episode #898 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast.

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #898. When it comes to unearthing the real power of coaching and getting the best out of people and the work that they do, few people make it as accessible, engaging and smart as Michael Bungay Stanier. He's both a good friend and a perpetual fountain of wisdom. You might already be familiar with Michael's breakthrough book, The Coaching Habit. It's a tome that's shifted the paradigm for managers and leaders by emphasizing the art of asking the right questions over doling out advice. But that's not where his literary journey ends (and that book has sold well over a million copies). Michael has also authored The Advice Trap, Do More Great Work, How To Begin, and his latest, How To Work With (Almost) Anyone. His work always expands on the importance of navigating complex conversations and leadership scenarios. His works are more than just books - they’re guideposts for those eager to be more intentional, impactful, and, yes, humane, in how they lead. Michael's approach to coaching (and life) is built on the premise that less is often more. He steers clear of abstract jargon and cuts straight to the chase, delivering insights that you can actually implement the moment you step out of our podcast realm and back into your daily grind. His philosophy aligns well with what we’ve always emphasized here on Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast — knowledge isn't just for keeping... it's for doing. With that, grab your notebook (you’re going to want to jot down the gold nuggets he shares), and get ready for an insightful ride. Lastly, Michael is also available to bring his wisdom into your everyday meetings, lunch & learns, and client events at ThinkersOne. As Michael often says, "Stay curious!" Enjoy the conversation...

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #723 - Host: Mitch Joel. How do we make career choices that make our life (and business) that much more creative? John S. Couch is Vice President, Product Design for Hulu where he led the redesign of the Hulu Experience. He launched his design career at Wired Magazine, where he shared an office with Douglas Coupland and developed a love for technology, design and tech and, as he is fluent in Japanese and could write copy, he helped launch Wired Japan. Then he moved to LA, taking leadership roles at The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), CBS and eBay before landing at Hulu. John is a true artist, and writing is one of his metier. He has written fiction in the past, but most recently published, The Art of Creative Rebellion - How to champion creativity, change culture and keep your soul.
