In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana, Chika, and Cristal Marie review episodes twenty-two and twenty-three of Fruits Basket (2019). In episode 22, we learn all about Hanajima’s powers and dark past. This episode was a really heavy hitter and brings out some Rocky Road moments in Sprinkles on Top. Hanajima’s family is loving, supportive, and sweet to their daughter. In particular, Megumi’s prayer for someone who understands his sister to come into her life really tugs at everyone’s heartstrings. There is also confusion and speculation around what Hanajima’s power truly is and where it could possibly come from. Hana’s bullying comes with a healthy serving of Hot Fudge. In episode 23, Kyo’s sweet blushy moments and cooking for Tohru to show appreciation when she was sick earn spots in everyone’s Floats Your Boat. Shigure saying “Be a good girl” to Tohru makes its home in Banana Split for a reason you probably wouldn’t expect. Chika and Cristal get vulnerable in Hot Fudge about their mental health struggles versus the expectations of those around them. Kagura receives yet another healthy serving of I Scream, You Scream.

In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika, Giana, and the Anibaes review episodes nineteen through twenty-one of Fruits Basket (2019). In episode 19, the interpretation of the Sohma’s acceptance, or lack thereof, of Ritsu’s identity differs amongst the ladies. Ritsu’s gift of books about fruit as opposed to actual fruit for Tohru also banana splits the ladies’ (mainly Giana’s) opinions. The non-humor of Mitsuru’s drastic measures due to Shigure’s antics gets a heavy helping of hot fudge. In episode 20, Hiro Sohma gets on EVERYBODY’S last nerve. Giana mistakes a Twilight quote for some old, fancy poem. While this episode is centered more on Hiro Sohma, Chika points out that it brings more to light about Kisa’s trauma and unsettling relationship with her mother. In episode 21, The expectations versus reality of Hanajima’s home gives everyone a good laugh. Matoko’s and the Yuki Fan Club’s behavior gets a heavy scoop of I Scream, You Scream.

In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika and Giana review episodes twenty-four and twenty-five of Fruits Basket (2019). It’s finale time! In episode 24, Kyo’s true form is shocking to Chika and Giana for reasons you wouldn’t expect. Kyo’s mother’s delicate treatment of Kyo, and especially his rosary, tugged at the girls’ heartstrings. Tohru’s ability to allow the way she cares for Kyo trump the fear she has of his true form makes Giana “a wreck”. In episode 25, Chika credits Yuki for how much work he put into resisting his revulsion to the cat spirit. Giana takes the opportunity to fangirl over Eric Vale one last time. The lack of information about the aftermath of the reveal of Kyo’s true form leaves lots of lingering questions. Kagura and Kazuma leaving without saying goodbye after everything that occurred the previous night leaves a bitter taste in this week’s sundae. Also, why would Shigure invite everyone to his house for dinner if he wasn’t going to be present??
