Listener Teddy N. noticed a Richard Pryor-shaped hole in the Shat The Movies library and decided to plug it with an underappreciated classic: "Brewster's Millions."

In this episode, we remember a comedic genius in his prime with a knockout supporting cast. We also find out why Big D hates the Mets, who would play a $30 million Shat on Music Festival, and which Mortal Kombat movie is superior.

Along the way, we also quote Mase, celebrate a spicy John Candy, feed Big D all the rules he can stomach, hear voicemail from Hot Sauce Steve and Don Sauce, and read an "Interview with the Vampire" letter that touched our eternally damned souls.

"Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny" just hit theaters, the fifth installment in the legendary Harrison Ford series. But a lesser-known archeological adventure didn't enjoy the same success. This week, it's Richard Chamberlain in "King Solomon's Mines."

Is it a "Temple of Doom" knock-off? A parody? An homage? We're not sure, but "King Solomon's Mines" is a script with origins more than a century old. Shat The Movies megadonor MoonlitTear drew our attention to this quirky flick featuring a young Sharon Stone, "Indiana Jones" star John Rhys-Davies and loads of horny Germans.

In this first of a two-part podcast special, the Shat Crew learned about The Canon Group, 19th century racism and just how dark Indiana Jones could have gotten. Have a listen and join us next week for the sequel: "Allan Quatermain and The Lost City of Gold."

With a joke every 10 seconds, "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!" is considered by many the Gold Standard when it comes to '80s comedies. The gags are nonstop and forever burned into our brains, but is this 30-year-old movie based on a single-season TV show still funny?

That depends on whether you like jokes about loud urination, tigers mauling baseball players, ballistic missiles driving into fireworks shops, and full-body condoms. We do.

Other topics in this episode of Shat The Movies include the carefree vibe of the '80s, anti-montage parody montages, Ricardo Montelban's cool, Priscilla Presley's performance, what it means to let a joke breathe, and O.J. Simpson: hot or not?

Shat The Movies Fantasy Basketball champion Don Sauce chose a movie he'd never seen before as his prize: "White Men Can't Jump." And what he got was perhaps Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes at their best.

Like other Ron Shelton sports movies, this 1992 love letter to Los Angeles blends sex, psychology, and an underlying malaise to take the audience beyond the game and into life itself.

In this episode, the Shat Crew discusses the history of white basketballers, how to get on "Jeopardy!", Rosie Perez' sex appeal, the lush dialogue of '90s movies, why Comic-Con has gone downhill and how to ask for sex in Portuguese.

"Tango & Cash" was the final major motion picture released in the 1980s. Like a fish born with legs, this 1989 action-comedy showed signs of evolution into a new age but sucked ass at swimming.

Big D didn't know "Tango & Cash" was supposed to be comedy. Gene wondered why the movie failed so hard at depicting journalism and court proceedings. And both hosts were shocked at the entire prison plotline.

In this episode, The Shat Crew asks A.I. to assist with new action-star pairings (Chuck Norris and Van Damme, anyone?), apologizes to Teri Hatcher, wonders if Jack Palance is OK, and braces for an HBO reboot from the makers of "True Detective."

play

Big D was so conflicted on his feelings toward "Stand By Me" that he took an extra 24 hours to process the Rob Reiner classic before delivering his verdict. It's not a fun movie, per se, but it generated some honest reflection from the Shat Crew.

Gene was reminded of his childhood friendships, his relationship with The King Bee, and adventures along train tracks. Ash lamented Facebook's refusal to let high school acquaintances fade away, and Big D shared how seeing his first dead body changed his view on death.

Also on this episode, the trio discuss whether parents have favorite children, whether Stephen King is a one-trick pony, how to remove leeches, and a theory on Ace Merrill being turned into David Powers from "The Lost Boys." And finally, Ash confronts Big D about rumors he wants her off the podcast.

Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review - Stargate (1994)

Stargate (1994)

Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

play

02/22/22 • 64 min

Is "Stargate" as good as "Star Wars?" Maybe not. Is it every bit as fun? Possibly!

Roland Emmerich's 1994 ode to Ancient Egypt boasts a surprisingly kickass musical score, some super creative costuming, and possibly the secrets to where Saddam Hussein hid his yellow cake. But it isn't without its problems.

Your main villain, Ra, is utterly impractical with his security forces (what's with those helmets?), spacecraft (who flies a pyramid?), and body choice (may we suggest being Rodrigo Santoro next time?).

Your heroes, despite being a hot James Spader and steely Kurt Russell, are hamstrung by terrible tactics (camping out in the open), a useless team (who cast French Stewart as a commando?), and little balls on their berets.

And your main attraction, the titular Stargate, is a giant combination lock that ripped off "The Abyss" and defies any semblance of science.

But none of that matters because this was the movie we all needed in 1994: fast-moving with a little action, a little romance, and a lot of half-naked children.

In this episode of "Shat The Movies," we learn Big D didn't pluck his wife from the jungle, teachers are nerds, and why you should always "sleep with the gift."

When listener Rob F. commissioned "Gattaca" in honor of his father, we all remembered it as beautiful, futuristic and distinct. Oddly enough, we couldn't remember much else.

We remembered Ethan Hawke but not his lengthy voiceovers. We remembered Jude Law but not the incinerator scene. We remembered Uma Thurman but not her character's heart condition.

This 1997 sci-fi debut for director Andrew Niccol made some interesting choices, like casting loads of TV talent and pretending Jude Law and Ethan Hawke look anything alike. And it also had some swagger, like pinstripe spacesuits and film-noir vibes.

The Shat Crew was left to debate: Is "Gattaca" a case of style over substance, or is it a visionary film that went underappreciated for years?

Gene Lyons and The King Bee became friends in 1995. Two years later, "The Long Kiss Goodnight" was released on VHS, capturing the heart of a young King Bee who spent the next three decades trying to convince Gene to watch it.

For his 44th birthday, Gene was treated to a pizza and a spot on The King Bee's sofa to experience "The Long Kiss Goodnight" for the first time. And it was eye-opening, to say the least.

Thanks to listener Jeremiah, the two friends sat down in person, mixed a few old-fashioned cocktails and finally recorded a conversation about what might be Samuel L. Jackson's finest work.

They discussed how Gene cannot experience extreme happiness without immediately feeling sorrow. They explored how much fun a family actually can have with produce. They even dove into Craig Bierko's impressive dating history and '90s America's naivety when it came to paramilitary firearms.

Was Geena Davis too old for a shift into sexy action roles? Why didn't police respond to the trail of bodies she left behind? Should Mitch and Charly have ended up together? Who would you cast in a "The Long Kiss Goodnight" remake? And was this movie a waste of good Cox?

Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review - Thief (1981)

Thief (1981)

Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

play

12/24/24 • 61 min

This week on "Shat the Movies," we’re diving into Thief (1981), Michael Mann’s gritty, neon-lit crime drama starring James Caan. Join us as we explore the world of Frank, a professional thief with a plan, as he navigates loyalty, betrayal, and the high cost of trust.

We’ll discuss the film’s stylish direction, intense performances, and its influence on later crime thrillers. Whether you’re a fan of Mann’s work or new to this classic, tune in for a deep dive into one of the best heist films of the ‘80s!

Plot Summary: In the 1981 neo-noir crime thriller Thief, directed by Michael Mann, James Caan stars as Frank, a skilled safecracker and professional thief who dreams of leaving his criminal life behind to pursue a normal existence. Frank operates with precision and discipline, running his own crew and keeping his operations clean and professional. His ultimate goal is to settle down with his girlfriend, Jessie (Tuesday Weld), and start a family.

Frank's plans take a turn when a powerful Chicago mob boss, Leo (Robert Prosky), offers him a lucrative job with promises of financial security and a quick path to retirement. Initially reluctant, Frank agrees to the deal, lured by the prospect of fulfilling his dream. However, as he becomes entangled in Leo’s web of control, Frank realizes that walking away from the mob may be harder—and deadlier—than he anticipated.

The film features one of its most iconic scenes early on: an intense, wordless safecracking sequence that showcases Frank’s meticulous craftsmanship, set against a haunting score by Tangerine Dream. As the story unfolds, Frank’s moral code is tested, and his determination to break free from his past leads to explosive confrontations with Leo and his henchmen.

Thief is a quintessential Michael Mann film, blending atmospheric visuals, urban grit, and a character-driven story of ambition and betrayal. James Caan’s powerhouse performance captures the complexity of a man struggling to reconcile his criminal skills with his desire for a better life. The film’s themes of independence, loyalty, and personal freedom resonate through its high-stakes narrative and stunning action sequences.

Join our podcast review as we revisit Thief, discussing its intense heist scenes, iconic soundtrack, and whether this neo-noir classic still stands as one of the best in its genre today.
