For many of us researchers, communicating science is something that we do in addition to writing papers, teaching, supervising, and acquiring research grants. Sometimes, it can be overwhelming because it comes on top of all the other responsibilities. However, today's guest demonstrates that one doesn't need to be overwhelmed to be successful on social media while maintaining a regular job.

In this episode I am joined by Amy Aines. Amy supports researchers to be more effective when talking about their science and she co-wrote the known scicomm book “Championing Science”.

If you listen to this episode, you will get to hear seven practical tips on how to get your points across and on the way to that also become a better public speaker.

The seven points are:

Before you speak

  1. Forget to smile and show warmth
  2. Take a technical talk and reuse it/start with existing slides

When You Speak

  1. Try to sound smart
  2. Put too much on one slide/too much detail
  3. Explain all the work you did
  4. Value precision over impact
  5. Ramble on without a clear message and call to action

You can find Amy on Linkedin, Twitter and on her company website. Scroll further down for more resources.

Initially started as a business platform to share CVs, Linkedin has grown into a fully fledged social media network. It is regularly used by researchers and scientists to share knowledge, build networks and find industry partners to collaborate with. To get grips on the platform I invited Mike Young to the Science Communication Accelerator Podcast. Mike is based in Copenhagen and trains researchers how to successfully use Linkedin and Twitter. Mike suggests that there are three key functions for scientists when using Linkedin. These are sharing science, networking, and ideation. While the first two are pretty straight forward to understand, ideation was a new term for me. What Mike means with ideation is the constructive process of creating and co-developing ideas by interacting with other members on the platform. I had a lot of fun producing this episode with Mike. He is a real integer and supportive guy to talk to.
