SAX IN THE MORNING

I would love to hear from you, just send me text and let me know what you think of the podcast.

Sometimes people see others who are successful and think to themselves, “Oh they got lucky,” or “They must have had it easy.” What they don’t see is the patience, hard work and relentless effort these people put in to achieve those results. I remember in 1989 when I was playing for the New York Yankees we were out of the playoff hunt by early September but our first baseman Don Mattingly had put up great numbers that year. On the last day of the year I showed up early to stretch and get ready and under the bleachers was Don Mattingly. The game meant nothing in the standings but listen to today’s short to hear how Mattingly showed me how he ignored those circumstances and created his own.

Episode 3: Mike Kowalski, former drummer for The Beach Boys and rabid LA Dodgers fan.

I would love to hear from you, just send me text and let me know what you think of the podcast.

Today I talk with Mike Kowalski who spent 39 years playing a variety of instruments for The Beach Boys, touring with them as a second percussionist starting in 1968 and taking over as their full time drummer for 23 years after the unfortunate death of Dennis Wilson in 1983. Mike was given his first set of drums by the famous actor Jack Webb after Webb witnessed him banging along to a record with two hair brushes and two small drums at the age of 10. Mike went on to play drums at a young age for acts such as Redbone, Sonny and Cher and Etta James before landing a touring gig with The Beach Boys.

I met Mike after he heard Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully mention that I played drums on a broadcast. Mike was a huge Dodger fan and said he had to meet the new second baseman who also played drums. We met in a hotel lobby at spring training and have been good friends ever since.

We talk about Mike’s long career with The Beach Boys, the genius of Brian Wilson, playing in a jam session with Jimi Hendrix and Mike’s longtime love of baseball. His knowledge of baseball is darn near as impressive as his knowledge of music. This is a wonderful conversation I know baseball fans and music fans alike are going to enjoy listening to.

9-21-21: Have you ever met a successful pessimist?

I would love to hear from you, just send me text and let me know what you think of the podcast.

Have you ever met a successful pessimist? I know I haven’t. People who are successful ignore the odds, overcome the hardships and stay focused on the prize. Just take the story of Wilma Rudolph who contracted polio as a little girl, which left her with a brace on her leg and pessimistic doctors telling her she would probably never walk or run normally. Well they were right, she didn’t walk or run normally because she grew up to become a 3-time Gold Medal Champion in the 1960 Olympics and was given the title at the time of the “fastest woman alive.” Listen to today’s short for the full story along with an old Cherokee story about the good, or positive wolf and bad , or negative and pessimistic wolf that lives inside all of us.
