The Role of Narrative Medicine in Understanding Your Body's Story with Andrea Nakayama
Satiated Podcast
12/29/24 • 55 min
Happy Satiated Saturday!
Something I've been noticing is how much we're taught to see any symptom as a sign that something is "wrong" and that we have to embark on a "healing journey" to "fix" the symptom.
For a moment, try this out on your body. Tell it that there is something wrong that you need to fix. What do you notice? How does your body respond to that?
Striving to “heal” your body sends the message to your body that you are in danger. Your body activates your sympathetic nervous system and takes all your internal resources away from repair toward survival. You cannot heal in a fight or flight state. To decrease any bodily symptom or food coping mechanism, you have to stop thinking of yourself as broken and needing to be fixed.
In this week's Satiated Podcast episode, I chat with Andrea Nakayama, Functional Medicine Nutritionist, educator, and founder of Functional Nutrition Alliance about:
- The gaps in traditional healthcare
- Shifting perspective of a "healing journey"
- Misconceptions of nutrition
- The basics of a health foundation
- Understanding the body's signals
- The three tiers of nutritional mastery
- Role of Narrative Medicine in recovery
- Supporting the body's natural healing

Happy Satiated Saturday!
I've gone out to eat sushi many times. Several years ago, when I had to go to a sushi restaurant for a work meeting, I thought, "Sure, no problem."
On this particular afternoon, the restaurant was loud and bustling. I could barely hear anyone down the table, and I was there with people who didn't necessarily put my body at ease.
By the end of the meal, I was doubled over in digestive pain. At the time, I didn't want anyone to know how much pain I was in. So, I used the excuse that my then-boyfriend (and now-husband) had texted me and I needed to go home.
I went home and immediately got into an epsom salt bath and as an experience of safety returned to my body, the digestive pain dissipated and went away. This was one of those powerful experiences where I deeply felt, this was not about the food. This was about the context in which I was eating the food in.
The context surrounding your meals—the environment, emotions, beliefs, nervous system states, and inner narratives—shapes not only what you eat but also how much you eat. Your interactions with food are a reflection of both the world around you and the world within you. Your internal and external landscapes come together shaping the food choices you make.
In this week's Satiated Podcast episode, I chat with Josh Hillis, coach, author, and creator of Eating Skills about:
- Importance of understanding personal values
- Role of self-determination theory
- Necessity of context in making food choices
- Significance of practicing self-awareness
- Learning to recognize hunger cues
- Impact of emotional states on eating behaviors

Healing Trauma through Nutrition, Nervous System Regulation, and Energetic Herbalism with Michelle Brown
Satiated Podcast
10/13/24 • 49 min
Happy Satiated Saturday!
I've been reading more research than I have in years because of my PhD and it is connecting so many dots.
Research confirming how much changes in your body due to trauma. Research showing the connection between brain alterations after a traumatic event that fuels your food behaviors. Research revealing not only is what and when you eat a reaction to what is happening inside your body, but also that what you eat can increase or decrease your food coping mechanisms.
I'll be sharing more in future podcast episodes and today I'm excited to have a returning guest to the podcast.
In this week's Satiated Podcast episode, I chat with Michelle Brown, Functional Nutrition and Lifestyle Practitioner and Clinical Herbalist, about:
- the biology of trauma
- what happens to the nervous system after a traumatic experience
- nutrient deficiencies that occur when living in a trauma response
- herbal resources for nervous system regulation
- creating nervous system regulation routines
- and so much more!

Creating a Sense of Belonging and Navigating Body Image Issues with Kids with Diana Rice
Satiated Podcast
07/07/24 • 51 min
Happy Satiated Saturday!
We are at the last episode of this month-long body image healing focus.
And, I would be remiss if I didn't address our younger generations. Parents face a huge challenge now in navigating body image concerns with their kids as they face societal pressures from every angle to look a certain way. I work with so many parents who feel overwhelmed as to where to start or what to say when it comes to talking about body image with their kids. So this week's episode is for you.
In this week's Satiated Podcast episode, I talk with Diana Rice, Registered Dietitian, Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, and Certified Positive Discipline Parenting Coach, about navigating body image with kids, building resilience and confidence with your children, the importance of parents creating a healthy relationship with their own food and body, fostering a sense of belonging in kids, and challenging societal messages.
You can also read the transcript to this week’s episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/navigating-body-image-issues-with-kids
If you're not a parent, Diana provides some powerful examples of what we could all be doing to provide a safer body image world for everyone. You might also reflect on how you would meet your inner child in some of the approaches we discuss today to reparent yourself on the ways you perhaps wished you were met, seen, and held around your body image concerns growing up.

Satiated Podcast
03/07/20 • 7 min
Happy Satiated Saturday!
If you experience bloating, gas, pain, burping, constipation or diarrhea, acne or rosacea, and a runny nose after every meal, this can potentially be your body's way of letting you know there may be a gut issue occurring.
Trying to optimally nourish ourselves without healing gut issues can leave us feeling frustrated that no matter our best efforts, something always feels a little off.
No matter how much whole natural food I ate, for years I was still experiencing bloating and digestive pain.
I really want to stress here that if you have been feeling perplexed as to why your symptoms are continuing it is not your fault. There is something potentially happening inside your body that needs extra support.
In this episode, I dive into just how important an optimal functioning gut is and tips to start your gut healing journey.
You can also read the transcript to this week’s episode here.
If you have been experiencing a lot of gut issues for years, I understand how frustrating it can feel. You’re not alone on this journey. I’m here for you to navigate and learn and interpret the gut’s messages and wisdom it is trying to tell you.

How Enneagram and Embodiment Practices Can Revolutionize Your Money Habits with Bari Tessler
Satiated Podcast
07/21/24 • 50 min
Happy Satiated Saturday!
I wish financial literacy was taught in schools earlier on in life. I've had so many conversations with others about the deep shame and personal judgment that can arise when you feel unclear about how to navigate your money life. And how does this connect with food?
Well, often how we interact with one area of our life is how we respond to all other areas. Have you ever noticed that when you want to eat everything you also want to spend your money on things you potentially don't need? Have you ever noticed that when you're restricting your food intake you're worrying about not having enough money?
Both food and money are a reflection of what's going on inside your body. Just as I talk about eating is a somatic practice, you can approach your relationship with money in a similar somatic way.
In this week's Satiated Podcast episode, I talk with Bari Tessler, M.A. in Somatic Psychology, Financial Therapist and Author, about body check-ins when making financial decisions, money dates, emotional awareness in managing money, the connection between Enneagram types and money habits, and practical steps to start your journey toward a healthier relationship with money.

Satiated Episode 164: How Metaphor, Allegory, and Symbolism Can Guide You Toward Healing Food and Body Issues
Satiated Podcast
03/26/23 • 40 min
Happy Satiated Saturday!
When I was diving deeper into healing my relationship with food, my therapist at the time suggested I read Eating in the Light of the Moon by Anita Johnston.
I was living by myself for the first time, trying to practice slowing down, and enjoying spending time with myself. I would do this through snuggling up on my couch and picking up this book.
Not only is it an amazing read, but this book holds a special place in my heart for this time I spent with it and myself. So...
In this week’s episode, I had the honor to chat with Dr. Anita Johnston, author of Eating in the Light of the Moon, Co-creator of the Light of the Moon Cafe, and Executive Clinical Director of 'Ai Pono Hawaii Eating Disorder Treatment Program, about how metaphor will help you to heal your relationship with food, what you will need to learn to release food from the job of helping you self soothe, and how to crack the code of your food cravings.

Satiated Episode 151: How to Make the Scary Act of Breaking up with Dieting Feel Safe and Regulating
Satiated Podcast
12/11/22 • 4 min
Happy Satiated Saturday!
Have you felt that intense urge that going back on a diet would just solve everything? It may have felt that your needs, physically and emotionally, became too big and dieting would keep everything in check.
So you go on a diet, and for a while, you feel in control. All your needs can get shoved aside to only focus on the need to feel successful at this diet.
And the moment that you crave something off the diet, when you've spent several days or weeks eating all those foods that have been labeled as bad, you might hear an internal voice say, "F this" and you eat and eat and eat to try to satiate all those needs that were put aside.
In this week’s episode, I talk about the process of breaking up with dieting and the first step to take to no longer have dieting be a part of your life.
You can also read the transcript to this week’s episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/breaking-up-with-dieting
If you're looking for more support on this journey, respond back to this email anytime. I know this healing adventure as I've been through it and am here for you in every stage and phase.

Reconnecting with Your Body and the Role of Embodiment in Eating Recovery with Ann Saffi Biasetti
Satiated Podcast
03/16/25 • 51 min
Happy Satiated Saturday!
Have you ever noticed that the strongest memories are the ones where you felt the most presence and embodiment? I will never forget my first yoga class because when I was shaking while holding a plank, I couldn't be anywhere else but in my body.
At the beginning of your eating recovery, you may feel disconnected and dissociated. Your body has felt like an unsafe place to inhabit. Food has served as a wise strategy to create distance from your body or a micro-moment of feeling alive. Creating safety with food is less about food and more about expanding your capacity to be in your body while you eat, feel, and live. Embodiment is often the missing piece in healing your food coping mechanisms.
In this week's episode, I chat with Ann Saffi Biasetti, Transpersonal Psychologist and Eating Disorder Expert, about:
- What embodiment is
- The importance of creating safe and comfortable embodying experiences
- The process of embodiment
- Creating a language for describing body sensations and emotions
- How embodiment can impact food behaviors
- What the ongoing journey of embodiment looks like
You can also read the transcript to this week’s episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/embodiment-in-eating-recovery
