Mikael Jorgensen (Wilco multi-instrumentalist)
Roadcase Podcast
03/26/21 • 113 min
Welcome to Roadcase, a podcast exploring the live music experience!! Please join us for this special episode with multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire, Mikael Jorgensen. Mikael takes us on a journey from his roots in New Jersey to his current home in Ojai, California and everywhere in between. His life with Wilco started 20 years ago when he met Jeff Tweedy in 2001 and began touring with the band in July 2002. Self-admittedly, Mikael did not have a deep background in the alt-country genre which Wilco made famous, but instead comes from a very personal musical history. Mikael shares his unique musical points of view with a liberal smattering of stories from the road and tons of great anecdotes and personal peeks into the world of Wilco. Come along for this one and enjoy the ride!!

Episode 244: Lollapalooza Series Part 3 featuring Destroy Boys, Quarters of Change, Tanner Usrey and Godly the Ruler
Roadcase Podcast
08/13/24 • 89 min
I’m back this week with this penultimate installment of in-person interviews from the couch at Lollapalooza where I spoke to four amazing bands and artists for this episode!
First up is the amazing East Bay crew, Destroy Boys, who are now two-time Roadcase guests! Vi and Alexia first formed the band at the ripe old age of 15, and haven’t looked back. Their latest album entitled Funeral Soundtrack #4, just came out August 9, and I’m happy to report that this hardworking band just keeps getting better! We tackle all the things that drive the Destroy Boys ethos and it’s a great conversation.
Quarters of Change from NYC, met in high school, and have a super fun and familial vibe. Having grown up together and being close friends is all part of their unique story of playing clubs as teenagers in the Big Apple. Their new album, Portraits, is out now!
Tanner Usrey is a southern rocker with a heart of gold and a down-home, hard working ethos. Tanner is an absolute Road Dog, and once he quit his day job in late 2019, only Covid could stop him, albeit temporarily. Tanner likes to keep as real as his country roots and has a great story to tell.
Closing this episode is the one and only Godly the Ruler, a Chicago native, who is part performance artist, part chameleon, and part hip-hop EDM rocker while on stage. Their tale is one of finding the lane and then crossing all the lines while still staying true to oneself.
Tune in now to listen to these amazing conversations live from the couch at Lollapalooza!!

Episode 260: LP Giobbi
Roadcase Podcast
02/12/25 • 101 min
I couldn’t be more psyched for this week’s guest, LP Giobbi. LP is an absolute bundle of joy and light and her shows are life-affirming and community-building celebrations that connect us through the common bonds we all share.
LP is a DJ, Producer, jazz-pianist and activist. She was one of NPR’s Favorite New Musicians of 2023 following her debut album Light Places, and her latest album Dotr, features Danielle Ponder, Portugal. The Man, Alabama Shakes and Holly Bowling, among others. LP has played a multitude of festivals including Coachella, Lollapalooza, Electric Forest with the likes of Diplo and SofiTukker, just to name a few. She is also well-known in the jam band community for her Dead House performances featuring electronic versions of the music of Grateful Dead, and her stellar 2023 remix of Jerry Garcia’s 1972 album, Garcia, is a perfect example of building the bridges that create those common bonds.
I talk to LP about her life as a performer and what exactly it has taken (and at what cost) to get to this point, and we also explore her work as an advocate and activist. She founded Femme House, a nonprofit that advocates for gender equity in electronica, heads up her label Yes Yes Yes, and is also Global Music Director for W Hotels. LP is Everywhere, to loosely quote a Dead motto.
This is truly one of my favorite interviews, and LP is a bright, shining light that you will learn so much more about through this amazing conversation!!

Episode 238: Pitchfork Music Festival Part 2 featuring Rosali, Sweeping Promises, and Angry Blackmen
Roadcase Podcast
07/26/24 • 73 min
Let’s keep the vibe rolling with this Part 2 of the Pitchfork Music Festival Series, and this fun episode features my conversations with Raleigh-Durham based artist Rosali, the eclectic duo Lira Mondal and Caufield Schnug of Sweeping Promises, and the Chicago-based rap duo Angry Blackmen.
Rosali’s latest album, Bite Down, is steeped in super cool folk rock vibes and equally stellar songwriting. Rosali have a great conversation, and we not only talk about dogs and N Carolina life, but we get into all kinds of rich terrain including how she strives be vulnerable in her songwriting and what the means for her in other areas of her life.
Lira and Caufield bring a super eclectic energy as they are both very much practitioners of the DIY ethos. This amazing couple have been friends now for over a decade and we talk about how they’ve structured their life in Lawrence, Kansas around their unique artform. They truly walk the walk!
Brian and Quentin are Chicago natives who bring their amazing energy to the Pitchfork stage for the first time. Their new album, The Legend of ABM, is deep and dark, and we talk about the issues that we all face, and Brian tells me about his effort to help others know that they are not alone. These two big-hearted giants talk to me about their lives both on and off the stage in this super vibey and very candid conversation.
Make sure to give a listen to these amazing in-person interviews!!!

Joe Garner (The Kernal)
Roadcase Podcast
02/04/22 • 65 min
Welcome to Roadcase!! Please welcome The Kernal, Joe Garner, to the Roadcase community. Joe's latest album, "Listen to the Blood," released January 14, is a very personal journey through the mind of this amazing artist whose modern take on country music is both heartfelt and wonderfully structured. His album is a posthumous tribute to his Dad, who was a touring musician and played at the Grand Ole Opry for 30 years. Joe takes it to an even higher level by wearing his Dad's original blood-red suit on stage -- a striking and lovely tribute. Joe's heart also belongs on the road where he relishes the opportunity to portray his songs in a live setting, and where his gift for intimate storytelling -- honed at open mics and with a deep love of poetry -- truly comes alive. So climb aboard the Roadcase bus and learn more about the intelligent and compelling Joe Garner, The Kernal. Hold on tight... it's gonna be a great ride!!

Welcome to Roadcase, a podcast exploring the live music experience!! Join us for this info-packed episode with the very chill Ambrose Kenny-Smith of The Murlocs, whose latest album, Bittersweet Demons, is a gorgeous and deeply personal work filled with tales of confronting life's difficulties and working through them to get to the other side -- very apt for our current times. Ambrose is a super hard working musician devoted both to The Murlocs as well as the massively popular King Gizzard & the Wizard Lizard, taking him frequently out on the road in the US and worldwide. Ambrose is open and willing to talk about his past struggles as well as the struggles of those around him and we go deep to explore what those friendship connections mean to him and how they inform his work and his own lifestyle choices. Yet Ambrose remains very humble and self-reflective; he is uber-focused on having a well balanced life and values friends over his own self. Hop on aboard the Roadcase bus for this fascinating interview an intriguing human and touring artist, Ambrose Kenny-Smith. It's a great ride!!

Peter One
Roadcase Podcast
06/23/23 • 72 min
It has been a long road for Peter One from his humble beginnings in Ivory Coast, where he grew up not far from the administrative capital, Abidjan, all the way to Nashville and the stage of the Grand Ole Opry and The Ryman. Having picked up a guitar at 17, then joining up with a schoolmate and fellow musician, Jess Sah Bi, Peter released his first album in 1985, Our Garden Needs Its Flowers, and shortly thereafter became a national sensation in his home country, playing for the President of Ivory Coast and regaling massive stadium crowds with his brand of Afro-pop and Americana-influenced folk. Packing up that success in a suitcase full of dreams, Peter left for America, landing in New York City in the mid-90s where he began a new life there working as a nurse and eventually moved to Nashville, all the while quietly making plans to rebuild his music career -- and that he did! With the re-release of "Garden" in 2018 thanks to the small indie label Awesome Tapes from Africa, and thanks to glowing reviews from both Pitchfork and Rolling Stone, Peter began to regain a level of popularity and begin his Second Act. Now, almost 40 years after his debut effort, Peter's sophomore album, Come Back to Me, has just been released on Verve Records. Triumphantly, but not unexpectedly, Peter eventually found himself playing big stages in the U.S. and even opening at The Ryman for Jason Isbell, who explained, "he's a natural performer; you feel like you're seeing someone who is a legendary singer." This is an amazing comeback story, and one of patience, perseverance and determination; one that is loaded with Peter's lowkey and confident vibe, all the while infused with his firm belief in himself and what he knew to be true about the power of his own creative expression and what he has to offer the world. Join us on Roadcase while Peter talks about the long road from Ivory Coast to Nashville on this week's episode. It's a great one!!
