Richest Men in Town - Episode #84: "In the Thick of Thin Things"
play

12/14/21 • 84 min

In This Episode:
Tyler and Mike get a perspective that is different than any other perspective of the other 80+ episodes of the RMIT podcast. All of the guests on RMIT have some on the show and shared amazing stories of their rich lives. Stories of love, faith, and overcoming challenges. This week, the guys sit down with Carlos Deosembela and he lets us in on his life as he is in the middle of the struggle. Carlos gives the guys a front-row view of his "reset" as he picks up the pieces and finds the strength to continue on. He teaches lessons learned the hard way about the danger of complacency, chasing what doesn't matter, and regret. The result is a masterclass on worth, identity, turning outward, and grit. The guys, along with RMIT listeners, will never forget the time they spent with Carlos Deosembela.

Show Notes

Who Said It...

  • “We become so caught up in the busyness of our lives. Were we to step back, however, and take a good look at what we’re doing, we may find that we have immersed ourselves in the ‘thick of thin things.’ In other words, too often we spend most of our time taking care of the things which do not really matter much at all in the grand scheme of things, neglecting those more important causes” -Thomas S. Monson in “What Have I Done for Someone Today?” from Oct. 2009 General Conference).
  • "Good is the enemy of great. Good is the mortal enemy of great. If you think about it, it’s one of the main reasons why we have so few things that become truly great. We by and large do not have great schools. Why? Because we have good schools. We by and large do not have great government because we have good government, and it works pretty well. Most companies will never become great because most are really quite good. Therein lies much of their main problem.
The truth be told, in this great society of abundance that is the modern world,  most people will wake up at the end of their lives and need to look back and accept the horrifying truth that they did not have a great life because it is oh so easy to settle for a good life. Good is the enemy of great (Voltaire)." -Jim Collins
  • "We are kept from our goal not by obstacles, but by a clear path to a lesser goal." -Robert Brault

Show Notes

Who said it...

  • "A man's got to have a code, a creed to live by, no matter his job." -John Wayne
  • "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." -Maryanne Williamson
  • I met a stranger in the night,
    Whose lamp had ceased to shine;
I paused and let him light
    His lamp from mine.
A tempest sprang up later on,
    And shook the world about,
And when the wind was gone,
    My lamp was out.
But back came to me the stranger—
    His lamp was glowing fine;
    He held the precious flame
    And lighted mine.
    -Lon Woodrum
  • “I teach them correct principles and they govern themselves.” -Joseph Smith

Richest Men in Town - Episode #23: "30 Seconds of Peace"
play

10/13/20 • 126 min

In this episode...
Tyler and Mike sit down with Dan Funk to hear his emotional and inspiring story of hanging on to faith despite losing everything.  Dan lets the guys in on the hard lessons that life has taught him recently and through it all he has learned what life is really all about.

Show Notes

Who said it...

  • "A memorable account of the power of [inspired] teaching comes from the life of the prophet Jeremiah. This great man felt the way most teachers or speakers or Church officers feel when called—inexperienced, inadequate, frightened.

But the Lord reassured him: 'Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee. … Therefore gird up thy loins, and arise, and speak unto them.'

So speak unto them he did, but initially not with much success. Things went from bad to worse until finally he was imprisoned and made a laughingstock among the people. Angry that he had been so mistreated and maligned, Jeremiah vowed, in effect, never to teach another lesson, whether that be to an investigator, Primary child, new convert, or—heaven forbid—the 15-year-olds. “I will not make mention of [the Lord], nor speak any more in his name,” the discouraged prophet said. But then came the turning point of Jeremiah’s life. Something had been happening with every testimony he had borne, every scripture he had read, every truth he had taught. Something had been happening that he hadn’t counted on. Even as he vowed to close his mouth and walk away from the Lord’s work, he found that he could not. Why? Because “his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.” (Jer. 20:7-9) -Jeffrey R. Holland in “A Teacher Come from God"

Now, as my mind caught hold upon this thought, I cried within my heart: O Jesus, thou Son of God, have mercy on me, who am in the gall of bitterness, and am encircled about by the everlasting chains of death.

  • Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis:
    •  "Remember, he is not, like you, a pure spirit. Never having been a human (oh, that abominable advantage of the Enemy’s!) you don’t realize how enslaved they are to the pressure of the ordinary. I once had a patient, a sound atheist, who used to read in the British Museum. One day, as he sat reading, I saw a train of thought in his mind beginning to go the wrong way. The Enemy, of course, was at his elbow in a moment. Before I knew where I was I saw my twenty years’ work beginning to totter. If I had lost my head and begun to attempt a defense by argument, I should have been undone. But I was not such a fool. I struck instantly at the part of the man which I had best under my control, and suggested that it was just about time he had some lunch. The Enemy presumably made the countersuggestion (you know how one can never quite overhear what He says to them?) that this was more important than lunch. At least I think that must have been His line, for when I said, “Quite. In fact much TOO important to tackle at the end of a morning,” the patient brightened up considerably; and by the time I had added “Much better come back after lunch and go into it with a fresh mind,” he was already halfway to the door."
