In the first episode of the series, Ironman Master Coach Matt Dixon provides a comprehensive overview of the PurplePatch Pillars of Performance. He starts with Endurance, or Movement for those not necessarily pursuing podiums.
In coming episodes, we will delve into the other three Performance Pillars, which include Strength, Nutrition, and Recovery. Lastly, we will examine the optimizer that ties all of these pillars together and establishes the traits and practices that make up a high-performance mindset.
This series is for everyone. Each episode aims to address the topic with two specific groups in mind - athletes who are training and competing in events, and individuals who are looking to enhance their health, energy, and performance in their personal and professional lives.

70 Pills, Thrills and Bellyaches
Purple Patch Podcast
06/05/19 • 44 min
Where do supplements, pills, powders and the like fit in the spectrum of your performance evolution? Are they a key catalyst to performance, or a bunch of voodoo and empty promises designed only to drain your wallet?
Today, Matt dives into the nooks and crannies of performance trickery and supplementation - the big promises of maximizing performance gains through supplements, treatments, and interventions.
There is a veritable gray zone between medicine and coaching, and this episode bridges that murky gap to provide an information filter and appropriate lens when it comes to supplementation. He details:
- Factors to consider when taking supplements
- How and when to supplement
- Which supplements may actually be useful and beneficial in your daily life
The mission of this episode is to simplify and help you focus on what is important. At most, the supplements you take should be a shelf in your cabinet and not the whole cabinet.
If you want performance, health, longevity, sex drive and all of the other promised results from charlatans — it is not coming in a pill. The bedrock of success sits in the fundamentals and, as always, nailing the basics.

Episode 233: Breaking the Injury Cycle (Part 2) - The Role of Nutrition
Purple Patch Podcast
09/07/22 • 52 min
In part two of our three-part series on injury prevention and management, Matt Welcomes to the podcast leading performance nutritionist Scott Tindal of FuelIn for a discussion on the role of nutrition in injury prevention, mitigation, and recovery.
Together Matt and Scott frame the topic of injury through the lens of under-fueling or improper fueling and its impact on soft tissue and bone health.
The conversation covers:
- Low Energy Availability (LEA), Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDS), Over Training Syndrome.
- Chronic vs. Acute LEA
(7:06) "What I think tends to happen is athletes see the results of...taking in limited amounts of fuel. They see the body composition improve, they see the weight drop, they see maybe some improvement in these performance parameters, maybe because of reduced weight, and then they get oh, maybe if I lose more, maybe if I go further. Maybe if I drop more fat, maybe if I don't eat as much here, I can continue to improve, and then you start to see those changes, you know. Not just from a physical standpoint, but also a mental standpoint as well. And that's when I think if we're talking about soft tissue injuries and bone injuries, that's when it starts to occur."
- Caloric intake and the balanced consumption of carbs, protein, and fat
- Proper hydration
- Navigating dietary restrictions
(30:24) "I fully respect the decision to go vegan or vegetarian. And I think you just need to be aware of the implications of those diet types, especially when trying to perform high volume, high intensity, you know, lots of load training, I think it just needs to be -- you need to be aware of protein intake, carbohydrate intake, fat intake, and total caloric intake when doing that, along with all the micronutrient potential deficiencies that could exist with a poorly designed the, you know, vegetarian diet."
Matt and Scott also discuss the most common nutritional mistakes athletes make that promote injury and the practices that lead to bone resorption - the shrinkage or loss of bone.
Scott Tindal also explains what it means to “feed the injury” as well as the habits athletes should avoid during injury recovery.
(40:59) "When injury occurs, I think the most common mistake is that athletes will drop caloric intake. So they all say, sh**, I'm getting fat, because I can't move. But if we look at acute muscle damage...induced through exercise, we see an increase in resting metabolic rate. And that will occur for at least up to 72 hours. So if you get an injury, certainly don't restrict caloric intake for at least the first 72 hours. That would be something that we would absolutely stress that actually, if anything, increase your energy intake during those first three days post-injury, to allow the body to recover."
The purpose of this episode is to provide an understanding of the negative physiological challenges that occur due to improper nutrition and how to leverage nutrition in a well-balanced and well-rounded approach to injury prevention, care, and rehabilitation.

Purple Patch Podcast
02/12/25 • 50 min
A fresh new format featuring a coaching conversation with Host Matt Dixon and Co-Host Max Gering. This Valentine’s Day, we explore how athletes can integrate sport into life in a way that strengthens relationships rather than strains them—because true performance isn’t just about results, it’s about the bigger picture. IRONMAN Master Coach Matt Dixon, founder of Purple Patch, discusses the evolution of his coaching philosophy with Purple Patch Coach Max Goering. Dixon, a former swimming coach and professional triathlete, emphasizes the importance of recovery, strength training, and nutrition in athletic performance. He recounts early successes with athletes like Tyler Stewart and Chris Leiferman, highlighting the shift from individual to team-based coaching. Dixon also discusses the application of these principles to time-starved executives, stressing the benefits of a performance-driven lifestyle. 18 Jesse Thomas - Part 1- Winning Wildflower: How a Borrowed Bike and Cheap Sunglasses Catapulted a Career
Purple Patch Podcast
04/24/18 • 64 min
Click Here to Register for the Jesse Thomas Wildflower Giveaway!
In 2011, Jesse Thomas was a new pro triathlete. He was so new, in fact, that when he decided to race the Wildflower Triathlon at the last minute that year, there were no real pro spots left, so he ended up with bib number 87, the first number behind the female pro bibs.
Picture this: He was on a borrowed bike and, fellow pro triathlete, Matt Lieto, let him borrow an aero helmet. Jesse slept in a closet the night before the race and he even stopped at the drug store at the last minute to pick up a pair of cheap aviator sunglasses because he didn’t even have sunglasses to wear.
Literally, no one knew who he was; not even the race announcers who had to ask him his name as he crossed the finish line, much to everyone’s surprise, at the front of the stacked pro field.
In part one of this special two-part interview with long-time Coach Matt Dixon, Jesse walks us through that magical day, which was, indeed, his catalyst into triathlon stardom.
He was a true “newbie triathlete” competitor who won this legendary race which seemed downright unfathomable. It is, as they say in the interview, one of the most authentic moments in sport, a true Cinderella story, and there are many lessons of process, expectations, and performance to be absorbed throughout this conversation.
Some may call it a fluke, but what makes this story and coach/athlete relationship so special is that Jesse defended his title successfully for the next SIX consecutive years and now he’s back in 2018 (along with the return of the race) with a different lens on the sport, but, still, with big expectations and a true desire to win.
He can’t wait to bring it all back to where it started and we can’t wait for you to listen to this amusing, funny and inspirational account of the non-glamorous start to a pro triathlon career that has turned into one of the most successful.
In celebration of the return of the Wildflower Triathlon and Jesse’s return to the start line, we’ve teamed up with Roka and Picky Bars to givevaway prize packs valued at over $2000! Visit purplepatchfitness.com/wildflowergiveaway to register.

Purple Patch Podcast
06/23/21 • 56 min
The Purple Patch Podcast is all about performance in sport, but also in broader life. We work with people who are seeking to improve and evolve their relationships or behavior patterns, ideally for the better. Our guest today is Social Psychologist and Coach, Dr. Amy Johnson. She, too, helps people who are seeking to improve their lives, mostly around freedom from and anxiety and unwanted habits. She also hosts a podcast called, “Changeable.”
Today, Matt and Amy discuss the parallels and similarities of their work and clients.
- The Ways We View Change and How to Navigate Change and Adversity
- Why We View Certain Actions in our Life as Pass/Fail and How to Release that Tension
- How to Build a Healthy Relationship with Failure
- Why our Brains Seemingly Keep Getting in the Way of Performance
The goal? Both Matt and Dr. Johnson assist their clients in developing a mindset to not take the thoughts that fill our brains quite so personally. As Dr. Johnson says, “Your brain gets in the way because it loves you. It’s trying to protect you, but you don’t have to worry about every thought that passes your way. The less we do, the more we bounce back to find everything you’re looking for.”
