05: Get Better Results & Profit More with Transformational Engagements
On the Profitable Joyful Consulting podcast, I teach you how to increase your profits and enjoy your business more. In this week’s episode, you’ll learn how to use what I call “transformational engagements” to deliver more value, get better results and finally get off the revenue roller coaster in your consulting business.
When I first started as a consultant, I was frustrated because I would go in and do a project to solve a particular problem. Like most consultants, I’d work on a project basis, whether from six months to an ongoing basis.
That’s all well and good! But my frustration was that I would solve these problems, then go away and come back to ask, “Hey, can I follow up with you? I want to hear how things are going.” A lot of times the organizations would say, "What? We've moved on. We've actually we kind of forgot about that.”
In short, my work didn't get implemented. It was my fault for not staying on long enough to do this, but the clients would drop the ball and not implement.
"Shift the way you look at your work from quick-solving problems to providing strategically relevant long-term results to your clients."
This was sometimes because organizational priorities changed and sometimes because it was just too hard and they didn't want to admit to me that implementing the work wasn't happening. But I was not going to stand for that.
A little while later, I began to create offers and conduct my work in such a way that I could better ensure that the results of the work the client and I did together would stick.
So how do you get client results to stick?
The answer is transformational engagements. In this episode, you’ll find out what a transformational engagement is and how it differs from the way you’re working now. You’ll also learn:
- How to get client results to stick
- The types of work you need to do to get off the revenue rollercoaster and create consistent income
- Exactly how to pitch this kind of high-ticket transformational work to your clients
- How my clients have transitioned to working this way and how you can, too

“My number one value in my business is freedom. I don't want to be told what to do, or when to do. I want to have options and choices available to me.”
How much is enough money to earn through your business? When can you say “Yup, I”m done. I've hit my goal.”? My answer may surprise you.
Viewer Question: When is enough enough, meaning being comfortable with how much you make since it's more than you ever thought possible?
First of all, yay! Let's celebrate that accomplishment. By the way, you’re not alone in this question – and your success. In just one week, I had clients saying to me:
- I have more money in my bank account than I've ever had before, and a client is sending me a six figure check this week, on top of all of that.
- This is the most money I've ever made in my life.
- I've gotten to $52,000 a month, so I think I'm going to take a little rest for a while.
This is incredible, right? Maybe you feel like it's not all about the money. I’m here to tell you sometimes it is. And I think it's really important for us as women to get comfortable with it being about the money. Here’s the thing: It's important to earn a ton of money because it gives you all the things; freedom, options, choices, opportunities, access. And so knowing what's enough for you, it's a personal question and it's a really important question.
Before you go asking others about your personal number, hold off. If you ask your peer group, everybody's going to have an opinion. If you ask your financial planner, they'll have some ideas for you. If you ask your partner or spouse, they're definitely going to weigh in. Even your parents might have a totally different idea. And if we follow what capitalism says, there's no such thing as enough. More is more, is more, is more. That kind of thinking can drive you until you're dead, if you allow that to happen. So we have to be really super aware of what is enough for us. And this episode will help you do that.

I have a confession to make. I hate shopping, but I love the way I feel in beautiful clothes. I love to have new looks, and I really don't want to be seen in the same outfits over and over, but I also don't want to clog landfills with more fast fashion. Because I despise shopping, I've been known to buy too quickly and end up with a closet full of things I don't wear. But everything changed for me when I discovered Armoire. I was heading to a business event in Hawaii and I wanted to look fantastic. I got a gorgeous dress and the cutest jumpsuit. Armir is like sharing a closet with your girlfriends who just happened to have fabulous taste. Once a month, I choose stunning new selections, and a few days later, a package arrives at my door, new clothes, no shopping, different looks, no waste. I've rented over $60,000 of designer clothes for just $119 a month, and I'm constantly asked, "Where did you get that from?" Armoire! Try it for yourself. EP185: Allocating Time Well In Business
Profitable Joyful Consulting
11/14/23 • 30 min
“This question puts you in touch with what you really want to be doing.”
Do you ever look back on the week and wonder where all your time went?
Do you have projects and passions you want to pursue but can’t because you don’t have enough time? Where does all that time go?
This week I’m exploring two questions that are SO informative - and frustrating!
Informative because they reveal something that should be obvious: where you’re wasting time. And frustrating, because it’s much harder to do something about this than just to be aware of it.
But, once you’re aware, you will be SO motivated to make changes.
I’ve been working with my clients on where they are spending too much and too little time and have distilled down what I believe would be helpful for you to focus on as well. In this one, I share exactly what I see consultants spending too much and not enough time doing - find out if the same is true for you!
KEY POINTS:
- Introduction
- This email could have been a meeting
- Is this an actual strategy or a comfort zone?
- Are you getting ROI from DIY?
- How to set boundaries that prevent exhaustion
- Differentiating the “supposed-tos” from what works for your business
- One good benchmark for visibility
- Thinking about how to grow your business
- Choosing a single growth initiative for the year
The power and the pleasure of asking questions like these is you have this knowing inside of you, and it's just a matter of creating a line of communication for the answers to come through to you.

How To Create A Business Model For Your Consulting Business
Profitable Joyful Consulting
06/11/20 • 16 min
On the Profitable Joyful Consulting podcast, I teach you how to increase your profits and enjoy your business more. In this episode, you’ll learn how to create a sustainable, profitable business model for your consulting business.
In an address at the University of Arkansas, Sam Walton said, “If you have four, you’ll never be poor.” He was referring to revenue streams, and I agree with him. In this episode, I’m going to talk about the four kinds of revenue streams that you can put together in your business.
There should always be a lot of ways for people to pay you to help them. That’s basically what “never be poor” means: make it easy for people to pay you money and get your services.
A business model describes all the ways your business makes money and revenue streams refer to the products or services that you provide to your audience. We’re in a time when we need to get creative about serving people because some of the things we've been doing might not be working anymore. There are absolutely opportunities out there.
So let’s talk about those opportunities! In this episode, you’ll learn:

EP175: Women's Vocal Patterns That Kill Sales: Power-Undermining Sounds
Profitable Joyful Consulting
09/05/23 • 53 min
“By the time women are 12 years old, they have been completely trained with, ‘Say whatever you want to say, but don't upset anybody and be nice.’” - Tracy Goodwin
Women are programmed to be nice and quiet, to ask permission, to be tentative, to make all these sounds that make a person go, “Nope, I don’t want to listen to her.” We’re often stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to using our voices and expressing ourselves fully.
If you ask this episode’s guest, Voice Coach & Communication Consultant Tracy Goodwin, we have to start on the inside to change all those stories, to change the foundation that was given to us that we never asked for. That’s how we start to bring our real, authentic selves through in our lives and businesses to build more genuine connections, own what we’re putting out there, be more seen and heard, and get more clients.
Tune in to this episode of the Profitable Joyful Consulting podcast to learn how to be a more effective and captivating communicator - and increase sales! - by working with your voice (and voice stories).

How to Avoid 4 AM Freak-outs
Profitable Joyful Consulting
05/14/24 • 18 min
“Freak-outs are going to happen whenever you're susceptible to that irrational, fear-based voice.”
Do you get the 4:00 AM freak-outs? “Oh my God, there's not enough money. That client's going to fire me. Am I healthy? Am I sick? Is the world going to end?” Let's talk about how to get your brain under control so you can get good sleep and build your business.
Being woken up at 4:00 AM (or insert your own freak-out time here) is so disruptive to our daily lives; it’s pointing to an issue that really wants to get our attention. It can happen while you’re sleeping, or even while meditating, driving, or when you’ve just sat down for a little bit of peaceful time.
It wasn’t that long ago when I would have these periodic meltdowns with my husband where I would just say, “We're not going to be able to pay the bills. There's not enough money and the roof is going to fall in (our chosen metaphor for the time period).” One day, he finally called me out saying, “While you keep saying the roof is going to fall in, I can't help but notice that it's been literally years and the roof hasn't fallen in yet.” That, for some reason, broke the spell for me and I learned the tools to face the freak-outs head on.
I would love to teach you the tools so you, too, can stop losing sleep and start building a better mindset. In this episode, we’re talking about all the ways the 4:00 AM freak outs can interrupt our daily lives, what women consultants are most worried about, and what you can do to stop it. And yes, you can stop it.
End the 4:00 AM freak-outs once and for all. Press play on Profitable Joyful Consulting on YouTube: https://youtu.be/v_pAtVQdulA or your favorite podcast app: https://samanthahartley.com/how-to-avoid-400am-freak-outs/

How to Build an Effective Team
Profitable Joyful Consulting
07/23/24 • 26 min
“One of the great pleasures of owning my own business has been building relationships with my team members.”
Women consultants fall into different camps when building a team for their consulting businesses.
- Those who are doing everything themselves because they either believe they can't afford to hire team members or that no one else can do things as well as they can.
- “I'll figure it out” camp. And they probably can! Women are amazingly capable. They can multitask, are multi-passionate and multi-talented, and are also interested in learning and challenging themselves. But those ideas can keep us small, overworked, and frustrated.
In today's episode, I’m sharing practical tips along with some philosophical points of view that can help you think better about building your team.
People can be the most joyful or the most stressful parts of our businesses (and of our lives, btw). My intention today is to provide you with the most important principles to remember when building your team.
