On this exciting new episode, we have the pleasure of chatting with Renard T. Jenkins, President of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers who's also the Senior Vice President of Production Integration & Creative Technology Services for Warner Bros. Discovery. Discussing the responsibilities within the role, we learn that it's both massive and multi-functional. With over 30 years in radio, film and television, Renard's early academic interest was in marine biology. We talk about what shifted his focus and how having grown up until the 3rd grade as selectively mute, totally introverted and an only child made him a better storyteller. Renard serves on a variety of boards including MovieLabs, Hollywood Professionals Association, UltraHD Forum and Content & Entertainment Council, to name a few. He's multiple award-winning, has two Emmys, a Peabody Award and has worked for entities such as Turner Broadcasting, TV One and PBS while his very first job was at ESPN. This conversation features many highlights and nestled inside is a retelling of a truly great Muhammad Ali encounter. Renard talks about the changes he'd like to see take place in the industry, what makes a great manager, getting into the flow of your purpose and living out one's own dreams. Rare that you get two powerhouses in one episode but we managed. We got to chat with two multi-hyphenates about how they began working together in post-production despite being continents apart. Their pathways into filmmaking and editing are different but that didn't deter them from still managing to work together for the first time on “What Say What?!”, a wildly popular YouTube Originals series, executive produced by Issa Rae's HOORAE Media company and Zero Fatigue, a collective and music label founded by Smino.

Director, cinematographer, creative producer and editor, Jeredon O'Conner is a Howard University grad from Memphis, Tennessee. While at Howard, the wealth of academic and artistic creativity in film and fine arts helped drive Jeredon to push the envelope of creativity inside and outside of class especially when it came to celebrating and uplifting Black voices and artistry.

Hailing from Houston, Texas, Life Garland's journey into film began when he moved to Hollywood after graduating from high school. Purely by a sort of hard knocks education coupled with unwavering ambition, he became a production assistant at Propaganda Films working alongside the likes of David Fincher, Antoine Fuqua and Michael Bay.

In this conversation we talk about how it was that Life was later approached by Jeredon for “What Say What?!” while living in Australia and how the catalyst of it all was out of a need to employ Black professionals in post-production in a way that's reflective of what is lacking. The two share insightful tips for inspiring editors and much more.

Adam Lingo, Lead Senior Editor at National Geographic, has been working in the industry for over two decades. On this episode, we talk to Adam, an Earlham College grad, who stumbled into editing by accident while looking for work in the Washington, DC area. Getting hired as a researcher for a small production company ended up landing him his first editing gig as an assistant editor for that same company, providing him with a solid basis for the real-world education he needed to go on to edit award-winning documentary projects.

Award-winning editor, Taylor Joy Mason, of HBO's critically-acclaimed series, A Black Lady Sketch Show, made history as part of the first all-Black editing team to win an Emmy in the category of Outstanding Picture Editing for Variety Programming. On this episode, Taylor talks about her HBCU experience at Howard University and it feeling similar to working on A Black Lady Sketch Show, how majoring in journalism introduced her to the world of editing and why growing up in Seattle helped navigate post-production environments where a lack of inclusion was present. Taylor's credits include Lena Waithe's Twenties, Pose (Steven Canals, Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy's Emmy-winning series), Phoebe Robinson's Everything's Trash and Netflix's Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. Taylor's currently editing a horror film and she shares not only the way she approaches her work when it oscillates between wildly different genres but also what truly excites her about working in the industry as an editor and how networking and the power of connections have helped guide her successful career. Director, producer, showrunner, writer and former educator, Avril Speaks, joins us to discuss her journey into filmmaking. Like most of us, Avril developed a love for film and television at an early age. Her fascination later grew into being drawn to rich, character-driven and complex stories about women and spirituality, decorated in questions as opposed to easy resolutions. Interesting because as a producer on Netflix's Files of the Unexplained, Avril talks about not leaning into the obvious regarding the process of shaping this series about strange real-life occurrences and phenomena. Hailing from Queens, New York, it was only after enrolling in a class at Howard University that really ignited her interest in film as a viable career choice. In this conversation, she shares why attending the famed and acclaimed historically Black university has helped her maneuver through Hollywood's lack of diversity. We also talk about why being proficient in certain soft skills is as necessary as networking and how to navigate in a seemingly extroverted industry as an introvert. A phenomenal storyteller with over 20 years of experience, Avril was a producer on the SXSW Grand Jury award-winning film Jinn, written and directed by Nijla Mu'min. Her other projects include directing and producing the Discovery+ & NowThis docu-series, Uprooted as well as the African America, which received an NAACP Image Award nomination. Avril's produced the feature films, Hosea, Dotty & Soul and Black America Is... and was an associate producer on TNT's series, American Race. On this episode of Post In Black, we talk movies and music with film and TV composer, Dara Taylor. Born in Poughkeepsie, New York, Dara grew up a little outside of Buffalo. We talk about how, between both of her parents, there was a mutual love of music that found its way to her. Hence, she thought every home had a 'record room.' Her mother, a church choir director, was the first person to teach her about music arrangement and instrumentation. So, how did Dara go from being a computer science major to composing for her latest project, the feature film, Strays? We get into it as well as the 'aha moment' when she decided that music in film and television was the adventure she was destined to take. In this really great and expanding conversation, Dara shares advice for those interested in film and TV composing. We get her perspective on starting out in the industry, navigating it through relationships and rejections, and the comedy, Strays, starring Jamie Foxx and Will Ferrell. Dara was nominated for a Society of Composers and Lyricists Award in 2023 for The Invitation. Her credentials include Tender Bar, directed by George Clooney, The Noel Diary, HBO Max's Little Ellen, Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar, Curious George: Cape Ahoy, Amazon's The Boys Presents: Diabolical, American Refugee, Echo Boomers and both Netflix series, Bookmarks and Trial By Media. We speak with two-time Emmy Award-winning and Oscar nominated VFX supervisor Andrew Roberts on this episode of Post In Black. Andrew's credits include Haunted Mansion, Killers of the Flower Moon, Babylon, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Umma, Godzilla vs. Kong, Aquaman, Black Panther, Gemini Man and Snow White and the Huntsman, just to name a few from Andrew's long list of projects that span over 25 years in the industry. Because Post In Black is an interview series that features professionals working in post-production while highlighting their experiences and insight as Black people working in the entertainment industry, this discussion is a perfect season 5 premiere episode because we get to talk about Andrew's experience emigrating to the United States from London and navigating the industry without a network or community and how it has informed his involvement with the Academy GOLD Program, a career development initiative for professionals from underrepresented communities. In that the pathways into entertainment are varied and rarely linear, we talk about how Andrew's academic background in computer programming landed him a job at an architect firm which in turn ignited a special appreciation for the inner workings of software design and 3D technology. Through hard work, risk, hope and relocating to LA, he landed at Industrial Light & Magic where he began as a brain bar supervisor/virtual production supervisor on Obi-Wan Kenobi and later, became a visual effects supervisor for ILM. We were able to really geek out on this episode at length with a lot of great insight from Andrew on what it was like working on the sci-fi thriller, The Creator. We get some really cool filmmaking app recommendations and so much more from this conversation. Dig in! Peabody Award-winning editor, Dominique Ulloa, founder and chair of Ujima Entertainment Coalition, takes us on an awe-inspiring and brilliant journey as she shares how her unconventional pathway into post-production led her to creating her own company. Holistically unsatisfied with her career as a property manager, she decided to leave it behind and enroll as a full-time student at California State University, Los Angeles, majoring in Radio, Film & TV. Not long after her temporary position turned into a staffed post-production operations role at The Oprah Winfrey Network, Dominique talks about why she wanted to use her industry experience to empower others by building a community dedicated to championing Black excellence and providing a safe space for Black creative professionals.

This episode is a truly special one for those on the outside, looking in, especially if you're wanting to find a relatable illustration as to why, at any moment, your own powerful re-creation can manifest into something bigger than yourself. Dominique shares her views on creating community, challenges Black people face within the post-production realm of the entertainment industry, how to navigate the space and why you should never give up.
