Ep.114: Dr. Kristi Funk - Arm Yourself with Plant Warfare Against Breast Cancer (A Plant-Stock Replay)
PLANTSTRONG Podcast
10/14/21 • 36 min
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, which is why we’re showcasing a “Broc-Star Greatest Hits” presentation from our recent 2021 Plant-Stock Weekend, with board-certified breast cancer surgeon and physician, Dr. Kristi Funk.
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime and, yes, there are some risk factors that you can't change like age, gender, and family history. However, as Dr. Funk stresses, we have way more power and control than we think - and, this is good news!
One of the biggest factors in our control on a daily basis? The food we eat. Three to six times a day, we choose whether or not to arm ourselves with powerful plant warfare that is our biggest defender-in-battle against this disease.
There's so much research, motivation, and support in this uplifting talk that we simply had to share it and echo Dr. Funk's call-to-action: Eat Like You Mean It!
You'll hear and learn:
- An explanation of the breast cancer statistics and your inherent risk factors
- All of the risk factors we CAN control - especially what we eat
- Why has the number of breast cancer cases increased in recent decades? What does the research show?
- What is IGF-1 and what role does it play in the growth of cancer cells? What foods contain IGF-1 and why should I avoid it?
- What is the only diet known to prevent and reverse heart disease, diabetes, cancers, and dementia? You probably have a guess!
- Dr. Funk's Top 12 Breast Super Foods and breast cancer food checklist

Ep. 132: Carleigh Bodrug - The "PlantYou" Sensation
PLANTSTRONG Podcast
02/24/22 • 65 min
This feisty young woman (who really couldn’t cook, by the way) took it upon herself to start experimenting with plants! Her goal? Make this lifestyle approachable, easy to follow, and so, so fun.
You can't force it down people's throat, you kind of have to just lead by example so I try to talk as positively as possible about how many benefits that I've personally experienced from going plant-based rather than kind of shaming or dampering on people's food, because food is emotional and nostalgic, as you know.
Her new book, PlantYou includes, not just photos of the gorgeous finished products, but also photos of every ingredient you need, making it so easy to follow. You know what else I love? It features over 140 recipes that are not only plantstrong, but also OIL-FREE!
Instead of a glug of oil in the pan, why don't you try vegetable broth or water and I can guarantee the finished product of that dish is going to take almost identical if not identical, and you have now reduced the fat and caloric content dramatically.
Rip and Carleigh also dish on:
- The support she receives from her family and fiance
I was super lucky in that I was supported on that journey because I think a lot of people are going it alone, and the social aspect, I always say to people, the social aspect is the hardest I think, and in a way, because I wasn't doing it completely by myself, that was a little easier to swallow. Like you didn't have to explain as much if your parents were going the same route.
- Why she maximizes every ounce of food she can when preparing meals and snacks
So this scrappy cooking concept was all born by this desire to kind of like reduce food waste within our own homes and also reduce the amount of money wasted and I think something like 40 to 50% of edible food in North America goes to waste, so it's a huge issue. And I think a lot of people are going aimlessly to the grocery store each week with really good intentions and buying a lot of fresh produce that ends up in the garbage.
- Tips and tricks with leftover aquafaba, ginger, date seeds, potato skins, pickle juice and more!
- Tools for your plant-based kitchen
- Favorite recipes in her new book
- Leading by example with positive energy
I try to talk as positively as possible about how many benefits that I've personally experienced from going plant-based rather than kind of shaming or dampering on people's food, because food is emotional and nostalgic, as you know.
Trust me, you’ll be hearing a lot more from Carleigh in the coming months because the future is bright for this young broc-star.

PLANTSTRONG Podcast
04/09/20 • 55 min

Ep. 211: Dr. Sandra Musial - Leaving a Medical Practice to Go All-In on Food as Medicine
PLANTSTRONG Podcast
08/24/23 • 64 min
In 2021, Dr. Sandra Musial gave up a private practice and teaching career to go ALL-IN with what she loves most - helping people transition to a whole food, plant-based lifestyle.
She and other plant-based physicians started Plant Docs Providence to provide classes, education, and consultations to the public and medical professionals about how whole food, plant-based nutrition can prevent, improve, and reverse chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and certain cancers.
Today, she and Rip discuss:
- Her Ukrainian roots and why she wanted to pursue medicine
- Why she become a pediatrician to work with children
- What or who inspired Sandy to pursue plant-based nutrition
- The rewards and challenges of working with children and their fammilies
- The dedication and outcomes of starting an obesity clinic and a food garden at Hasbro Children’s Hospital
- When she knew it was time to go all-in on plant-based nutrition education
- How Plant Docs found a home at Plant City in Providence, Rhode Island
- Upcoming programs at Plant City
This career transition hasn’t come without risk, but when you pursue what you believe, the risk also comes with high-reward when you KNOW you’re making a difference in the lives of motivated people.
Sandra Musial, MD is a physician specializing in food as medicine who is dedicated to preserving health and reversing lifestyle-related chronic disease through whole, plant-based nutrition. Sandy earned a BS degree in Nutritional Sciences from the University of New Hampshire, and an MD degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School. She has worked in a private pediatric practice and at Hasbro Children's Hospital teaching the pediatric residents and medical students from the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She is a Culinary Coach from Harvard’s CHEF Coaching program, has a certificate in Plant Based Nutrition from eCornell, and a Health Coaching certificate from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition®. Sandy is board certified in Pediatrics and Obesity Medicine and started an obesity clinic and the first vegetable garden at Hasbro. Though she has witnessed the healing power of conventional medicine, she has also seen its limitations, especially with regard to disease prevention through healthy nutrition. Sandy started the nonprofit Plant Docs as an avenue for people to learn about the power of plant-based nutrition to improve health.

Ep. 180: Are Coconuts a Plantstrong Food?
PLANTSTRONG Podcast
01/19/23 • 68 min
We’re happy to welcome back the popular, Jessica Hegarty, to the podcast! Jess and Rip did this Facebook live event a few weeks ago and the response was so powerful, we wanted to share it with all of you.
Jess is the Director of Food Development and Strategy around all of our PLANTSTRONG food lines. She’s the one who researches every new product and ingredient we look at for our foods and if it doesn’t pass her sniff test, it doesn’t make it into the mix! Needless to say, we trust her implicitly and, if you’ve tasted our PLANTSTRONG foods, you know the rigorous taste and nutritional standards she holds us all to.
Today, Jess is here to talk coconuts. As you may know, we at PLANTSTRONG aren’t huge fans of it because of the ridiculously high amount of saturated fat. Saturated fat isn’t just detrimental to our arteries and endothelial cells, but it’s also harmful to our brain health. In fact, it’s pretty much the only whole plant food we just can’t endorse and you’ll hear exactly why.
But, Jess doesn’t just look under the hood of the coconut itself. she also explores other popular coconut-based products:
- Coconut oils
- Coconut waters
- Coconut extract
- Coconut yogurts and milks
- Coconut flours
Can any of these products be considered a plantstrong food? Are all the “supposed” health benefits just marketing hype? Is any of it worth our valuable dollar?
She’ll tell us and even provide some fun and healthy alternatives! It’s a fun and in-depth look at this exotic fruit.
