play

01/09/22 • 61 min

It's a lake fart! It's mummified Rasputin! No, it's the Van Gölü Canavarı, aka the Lake Van monster! The Van Gölü region of Turkey has been inhabited by humans for over 7000 years and ruled by multiple kingdoms. But there's another reported resident of the lake that's been sighted multiple times over the past century, the Van Gölü Canavarı. This large, serpentine being was even investigated by the government in the mid-1990s. Is there a giant lake monster making Van Gölü its home or could something else be causing all the strange encounters?

In this Story by the Slice Emily serves up some old-fashioned sole food. Yup. S-O-L-E. She dishes on the history of a rather unusual fashion that was extremely popular for nearly 300 years, the poulaine, aka the crackow. These shoes had unbelievably long toes that caused the wearers all kinds of problems not only through impairment of physical mobility. Why would anyone want to wear these and how could they have been such a big fashion statement for so long?

This story by the slice sends us back to revisit the Vikings and explore their culture before diving deep into the horrific torture known as the Blood Eagle. This episode is extremely graphic, so listener discretion is strongly advised, as Ashley provides a detailed description of how this brutal torture was supposedly carried out. Our episode ends with a quest for truth: Was the Blood Eagle a real practice or merely propaganda?

This week's meal is a Christmas special straight from the Alpine region of Bavaria and Austria. Emily cooked up the story of Krampus, but, hopefully, with some new flavors you've never tried before! Dishes of contemporary and historical representations of the Christmas demon and his deeds and a dessert of possible inspiration for his origin make for a devilishly delightful meal.

Lindsay closes out our tour of Turkey with three urban legends featuring female leads. For starters, we’ll take a bite out of the legend of Aynali Magara — a tale with a surprisingly explosive ending. Our main dish is the Myth of Sarikiz — the Fair Maiden of Mount Ida: a tale that will make you hate the patriarchy even more than you already do. To close out, dessert is the legend of Kiz Kulesi — a tiny tower with a lot of history that reminds us that it’s never a great idea to lock anyone in a tower, like ever.

Pineapple Pizza Podcast - Is This Giant An Original Or A Kapre?
play

02/13/22 • 65 min

Filipino folklore is filled with tales of giants, but the Kapre looms over them all. Though this mischievous being, still very much alive in the beliefs of the region, can be dark and dangerous at times, it is normally considered to be good-humored and playful. Its characteristics are rooted firmly in the history of the region and, surprisingly, the traits of other giants. The Kapre may be the most well-known giant in modern Filipino lore, but is it the OG?

Pineapple Pizza Podcast - He’s Got a Glorious Bird, and He Knows How to Use It

Ashley starts off our Filipino triptych with an oral epic from the Palawan, an indigenous tribe (living in the province by the same name) that can trace its lineage back some 50,000 years. After setting the tone by exploring some of the rich history of the Philippines and the tribe that created this stunning tale, Ashley dishes the details on Kudaman, a traditional epic that takes 7 nights to perform. Don’t worry; our version is significantly abridged for the sake of Ashley’s vocal cords. If you like feasts, magic, psychedelic experiences, and gorgeous purple herons, this is the audible treat for you!

Please consider doing what you can to help ensure the survival of the Palawan and put a stop to mining on their lands. Visit survivalinternational.org/tribes/palawan for more information, to see how you can help, or to donate.

For our first wildcard episode of 2022, Ashley explores the historic mystery of the Man in the Iron Mask. While there have been many theories over the last 350+ years, could it be that the real question that can finally crack this case is what was his “crime,” rather than what was his name? How was he connected to Nicolas Fouquet? And what could any of this have to do with the diamonds pawned by Queen Henrietta Maria of England? You can decide for yourself if the real story is more or less salacious than the wild secret twin brother theory from the Leo DiCaprio film, but no matter how you slice it, this tale and all of its drama are very, very French.
