You can pick your friends, you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friend's nose! Ever wished you were friends with Bob Ross? Or Mr. Rogers? To the Pieces to Wellness trio, these 2 exemplify many of the qualities of a good friend.
Friends come in all shapes and sizes. A good friend shows us who we really are by highlighting our potential and our deficits without judgment. Complementing as well as complimenting each other. A solid friendship consists of honesty and forgiveness; allowing each to go their own way without harboring resentment or guilt tripping. To us, curiosity seems to also be a key component to making and keeping friends. Being curious with friends means accepting the fact that you don't know everything there is to know, and enjoying learning together.
Karen says, “giving a shit matters." It's important to be friends with others who truly give a shit about you, and themselves, and to return these favors graciously. As with everything, a relationship that’s meaningful and long-lasting requires work and tenacious perseverance. Nothing that is good or worth having will come easy.
But friendship is not all about work. A good friend is also someone to laugh with, a playful soul to be silly with & always make time for fun. It's important to not be so focused on self-improvement that you don't have any time to enjoy life or people to enjoy it with.
You may be asking yourself, how does this all relate to mental wellness? A good friend can serve as a teacher, mentor, counselor, companion, or an inspiration. Additionally, nothing happens in isolation, least of all healing. Some of the most important pieces to your wellness may be the friends that you hold close. When you surround yourself in good company they can help elevate you into better company.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month so please take some time for yourself or do something intentional for your wellness.
