03 - CHAD SIMPSON: Can a college program truly be built on love and relationships?
05/16/20 • 30 min
Today's guest for my coach-chat is tennis coach CHAD SIMPSON.
Chad was a successful junior player growing up in Danville, IL, and went on to a stellar playing career at D1 Liberty University where he set the school’s all-time record for tennis wins in both singles and doubles.
In 2014 Chad was selected for his first head coaching position at NAIA Point University in West Point, GA, where he leads both the men’s and women’s teams. On the men’s side, Chad has built a perennial top 10 national program and won conference coach of the year for the 2018-2019 season. He’s coached 3 All-Americans and 5 all-conference members, but more than all the tennis accomplishments is the incredible impact Chad has on shaping the lives of his players through dedicated and intentional mentoring that extends well beyond the tennis court.
Chad’s integrity, insights, humility, and overall perspective on how to utilize sport for the life and spiritual development of young people are unmatched. He is a really good friend who I’ve had the privilege of working with through workshops and one-on-one coaching with his teams over the last couple of years.
It is a huge honor to have Chad as my guest on this series called the VOICE OF THE SMALL COLLEGE COACH.
If you'd like one-on-one coaching to grow your Mental Skills and build mental strength for turning Adversity into an Advantage, or are interested in discussing how I might bring value to your team, reach out to me through any of the following:

02 - STEVEN PAINE: The centrality of building strong relationships that extend beyond golf
Today's guest for my second ever coach-chat is STEVEN PAINE.
Steven was a golfer at NCAA D2 powerhouse Columbus State in Columbus, GA, under the guidance of coach Mark Immelman, a college career that included success and national recognition. Following college, he pursued professional golf as well as being a grad-assistant for his alma mater’s team while helping guide them to a birth in the national championship in 2013.
In 2014 Steven was selected for his first head coaching position at NAIA Point University in West Point, GA, where he’s now coached for the last six years. He’s built a perennial top 5 program and won the conference coach of the year award three times with a lock for a fourth from this past season. Steven’s team finished the 2019-20 season ranked second in the nation having gone undefeated in four big tournaments in the 2020 calendar year before the pandemic forced the cancellation of the final few matches and the national championship. He’s coached numerous All-Americans and continues his dominant success in recruiting and shaping a team that is fine-tuned for winning outcomes in the most pressurized environments.
Steven’s wisdom, discernment, maturity, character, humor, honesty, perspective, hunger, and mental grasp on coaching golf from both the physical-side and the mental-side are far beyond his years. And greatest of all, every player who goes through his program comes out a better man with better preparation for their future because of the way they’ve been shaped by Steven and his program.

04 - TOBY ROWLAND: Confidence grows at the intersection of preparation and experience
FOREVERLEARNING is one of my core values and one of the things I love pursuing is wisdom and insight from experts in a wide variety of industries and careers that can be translated into my work with athletes.
Consistent with that pursuit I’m going to do some interviews around the topic of handling pressure I’m calling THE VOICE OF THE PRESSURE PERFORMER.
Today we’ll dip into the world of Sports Broadcasting with my first guest for this new series, the Voice of the Oklahoma Sooners, TOBY ROWLAND.
Toby grew up a die-hard Sooners fan having spent his early childhood in Oklahoma before moving to Indiana for his high school years where he fell in love with the Cincinnati Reds, the Indianapolis Colts, and the Indiana Pacers. After graduating High School Toby returned to Oklahoma for college where he played basketball before launching Southern Nazarene University’s first-ever Sports Information Department. After college, Toby had a very successful career in both radio and television sports before getting the opportunity in 2009 to become the sideline reporter for the Oklahoma Sooners football broadcasts.
In 2011, Toby was introduced as the Voice of the Oklahoma Sooners replacing the broadcasting legend, Bob Berry who’d served in that role for 50 years. Over the last 9 years, Toby has cemented himself as a gifted broadcaster for Sooner-nation, coining familiar phrases and making his voice synonymous with the success of Sooner athletics including the nationally decorated Oklahoma Sooners football program.
It is a huge honor to have Toby as my guest on this brand new series called THE VOICE OF THE PRESSURE PERFORMER.
