From capacity management to changing performance measures, discover what’s changing in the NHS, the impact on the NHS long-term plan and what all this means for the future of market access. Tom Clarke and David Thorne, from the Mtech Access NHS Insights & Interaction team, review some of the insights from our earlier series: ‘How is COVID-19 impacting the NHS?’, as well as exploring trends and challenges uncovered in conversation with our network of NHS Associates in our first 'Whispers Words of Wisdom' podcast.
Tom and David begin by reflecting on what has changed in the NHS over 2020 and how this has evolved over time. They explore how the NHS response to the pandemic has impacted long-term plan priorities, particularly in the light of the recently published Evidence Based Interventions Engagement document (from http://www.aomrc.org.uk/ebi/).

Tom and David also discuss cooperation, collaboration and capacity management both within the NHS and with the independent sector. They consider how quickly hospitals and primary care will be able to clear the backlog of patients and the measures that might be brought in to enable this.

Taking all of this into consideration, David and Tom discuss how the pharma and medtech industries can support the NHS at this time and how these changes may impact the future of market access. For example, they explore how changes to performance measures may affect future economic models and how economic evaluations could be made more relevant to local commissioning decisions.

Pharma Market Access Insights - from Mtech Access - The hidden heroes of the NHS - The role of ambulance Trusts in keeping patients and systems moving
play

07/06/21 • 59 min

What role do Ambulance Trusts play in the success of the wider NHS? How might urgent and community care evolve as we head to integration as part of a joined-up system? How will an integrated ambulance service support system redesign to keep people out of hospital, and provide more proactive care to those who need it most?

Helen Ray (Chief Executive of North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust) joins Tom Clarke (Director, Mtech Access) to discuss the role Ambulance Trusts play in delivering care. This role far exceeds attending 999 calls. We explored the important role Ambulance Trusts play in keeping people out of hospital and in instigating new models of care. They are the first point of contact for many clinical events, both on the ground and through their role in NHS 111.

As such, Ambulance Trusts understand first-hand the real drivers for accessing health services. Helen Ray, as Chief Executive of North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust is ideally placed to open a window to their world and explore what a more integrated future may mean for emergency care and the wider health system.

Helen Ray joined North East Ambulance Service in 2019, following 36 years’ experience in various roles across the NHS. Helen was previously Chief Operating Officer at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, where she oversaw urgent and emergency care, medicine, child health, and community services with Board level responsibility and emergency planning and preparedness. She has also previously been Joint Managing Executive Director (operations) for North Cumbria acute and community services; Deputy Chief Executive for North Cumbria University Hospitals; and Chief Operating Officer for South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust. She trained as a nurse and has held a professional registration for 30 years.

Pharma Market Access Insights - from Mtech Access - Know your Place - where will power really sit in the new NHS - with Dr Steven Michael OBE
play

05/17/21 • 61 min

What will a ‘Place’ look like? What will this new layer of the NHS mean in practice and what decision-making powers will Place leaders have?

As the NHS starts its journey towards an integrated future, Dr Steven Michael OBE (Chair of East Cheshire Partnership) joins Tom Clarke (Director, Mtech Access) to talk ‘Place’, ‘Partnership’, ’Collaboratives’ and more.
The UK Government’s Health and Care White Paper, along with other recent policy announcements, set out a major proposed reorganisation of the NHS in England. This includes the introduction of the term ‘Place’, a localised function within Integrated Care Systems (ICSs). There is still much uncertainty, even within the NHS, about what this term and others like ‘Collaborative’ will mean in practice.

In this episode, Tom and Steven discuss what these new structures mean, how they may affect the patient experience, how they will impact decision-making and what they could mean for pharmaceutical and medtech market access.

Dr Steven Michael OBE has over 20 years of experience in the NHS. He began his career as a registered nurse working in psychiatric intensive care in 1985, before rising through various management and leadership roles to be CEO of a South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS FT between 2007 and 2016. He has since contributed to or chaired a number of NHS boards, including the NHS Confederation’s Mental Health Network, Spectrum Community Health CIC and East Cheshire Partnership.

Pharma Market Access Insights - from Mtech Access - Population to person - How will the voice of the individual drive health and care development?
play

06/02/21 • 61 min

Population health management is often talked about in top-down terms, but how seriously will the needs of individuals be taken as systems develop? How will personal needs inform care delivery? Why will the patient voice play a very different role in the NHS of the future?
Steph Edusei (Chief Executive of St Oswald’s Hospice) joins Tom Clarke (Director, Mtech Access) to explore these questions and more.
This episode was first released as a live webinar on Friday 21st May 2021.

Will NHS leaders, as part of an Integrated Care System (ICS), make conscious decisions to drive economic and social change?
What social and economic value do ICSs offer the wider population they serve? How will industry support ICSs to deliver population-based health and social benefits?

Prof Phil Richardson (Chair and Chief Innovation Officer, Mtech Access) is joined by Michael Wood (Head of Health Economic Partnerships, NHS Confed) for a far-reaching discussion around system integration, population health management, and the NHS’s social and economic potential.
In December (2022), Michael Wood authored a report exploring one of the four key purposes of an ICS: to help the NHS support broader social and economic development. Michael’s NHS Confed report looked at the economics of healthcare and where broader strategic partnership working might lead system thinking in the NHS.
Phil Richardson was one of several experienced ICS, local authority, university and professional experts that Michael invited to share their perspectives in the report.
We were delighted to bring Michael and Phil together in this webinar to discuss these topics, particularly in light of what these new leadership purposes mean for the NHS’s relationship with the Pharmaceutical and wider Life Science industries.
In the webinar, Phil and Michael discuss:

  • NHS Confed and the links between the health sector and the economy
  • The need for ICS leaders to focus on broader social and economic development
  • How Pharma and Medical Device companies can add value to support this key ICS purpose
  • Why health and economic development is key to tackling health inequalities
  • The important role the NHS plays as an anchor institution that links better health with economic and social development
  • What health and economic development could mean for funding at different levels of an integrated system – e.g. place based commissioning
  • Opportunities for industry to step up and support the NHS with economic and social development
