Perplexed Podcasts - Mysterious PNW Holiday Road Trip: The Staircase Murder
play

This is a special episode to all of our listeners from the wonderful podcast Mysterious PNW. We hope you love it as much as we do.

Kathleen Peterson's mysterious death in 2001, found at the bottom of a staircase with severe head injuries, led to the arrest and conviction of her husband, Michael Peterson, for first-degree murder. Despite the prosecution's claims of a violent attack, Michael's defense argued it was an accidental fall, and questions about the reliability of forensic evidence and expert testimony persisted throughout the trial. After serving eight years in prison, Michael entered an Alford plea in 2017, maintaining his innocence while acknowledging sufficient evidence for conviction, leaving the case unresolved and controversial.

Perplexed Podcasts - EPISODE 109 - Mary Toft and Her Baby Bunnies
play

01/21/25 • 83 min

Send us a text

TIMESTAMP - Story starts at 16:30
The story of Mary Toft is one of the most bizarre hoaxes in medical history. In 1726, Mary Toft, a peasant woman from Surrey, England, claimed to have given birth to rabbits. She convinced local doctors by presenting them with various animal parts, claiming they emerged during her labor. News of this strange phenomenon spread, and prominent physicians, including the king's surgeon Nathaniel St. André, came to investigate.

Initially, many medical professionals believed her claims, attributing the phenomenon to "maternal impression," a then-popular theory suggesting that a mother's experiences could physically affect her unborn child. However, suspicions grew as more physicians examined her and the circumstances of her alleged births.

The hoax was eventually exposed when Toft confessed under pressure. She admitted to inserting dead rabbits and other animal parts into her body, which she later pretended to give birth to. The story caused a scandal, humiliating the medical community and serving as a cautionary tale about gullibility and the importance of scientific skepticism.

Perplexed Podcasts - EPISODE 62 -The Amityville Horror
play

02/20/24 • 93 min

Send us a text

The Amityville murders and haunting refer to a series of tragic events that took place in a house located at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York in 1974. On November 13, 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered six members of his family in the house. He claimed that voices in the house compelled him to commit the murders.
A year later, the Lutz family moved into the house but fled just 28 days later, claiming to have experienced paranormal activity, including strange noises, unexplained odors, and sightings of apparitions. The Lutz family's account of their experiences was later detailed in the book "The Amityville Horror" by Jay Anson, which was later adapted into a popular film.
The alleged haunting of the Amityville house has been a subject of controversy and debate, with sceptics questioning the validity of the Lutz family's claims. Despite this, the Amityville haunting has become one of the most famous and enduring paranormal stories in American popular culture, sparking numerous books, films, and documentaries.
The Amityville haunting has been the subject of extensive investigation and speculation, with some individuals claiming to have experienced supernatural phenomena in the house. However, others have cast doubt on the veracity of the haunting, suggesting that it may have been a hoax or a case of mass hysteria.
The events at the Amityville house continue to captivate the public's imagination, and the story remains a prominent part of paranormal lore. Whether the haunting was real or not, the Amityville murders and subsequent claims of supernatural activity have left a lasting impact on popular culture and the field of paranormal research.

Perplexed Podcasts - EPISODE 95 - The House Of A Thousand Corpses part 1
play

10/08/24 • 60 min

Send us a text

The Tri-State Crematory was a family-run business that operated for over two decades, serving funeral homes in Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama. Ray Brent Marsh, who took over the crematory from his father in the mid-1990s, was responsible for handling cremations.
In February 2002, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) received an anonymous tip regarding human remains being improperly disposed of at the Tri-State Crematory. A propane gas delivery driver also reported seeing a human body on the crematory's property. Authorities responded and made a grim discovery. Over 300 decaying bodies were found scattered on the grounds of the crematory in various stages of decomposition.

Some bodies were hidden in buildings, while others were left in the woods or dumped in pits. Despite having received bodies from families for cremation, Marsh had not cremated many of them. Instead, he returned boxes of cement powder or dirt to grieving families, leading them to believe they had received the ashes of their loved ones.

Perplexed Podcasts - EPISODE 94 - The Charles Peck Calls
play

10/01/24 • 52 min

Send us a text

Charles Peck was a 49-year-old man who tragically lost his life in the 2008 Metrolink train crash in California. This crash occurred on September 12, 2008, when a Metrolink commuter train collided head-on with a freight train near Los Angeles, killing 25 people and injuring over 100 others. Peck's story became widely known not only because of the tragedy but due to a mysterious and eerie event that followed his death.

After the crash, Charles Peck's cell phone continued to make calls to his fiancée, family, and friends for several hours. In total, about 35 calls were made from his phone, even though he had died instantly in the collision. The calls gave his loved ones hope that he might still be alive, but when rescuers finally reached his body, they confirmed that he had not survived the crash. His cell phone was never recovered.

The phenomenon has been described as one of the eerie and unexplained elements of the incident, with various theories suggesting the phone's automated system malfunctioned or that it was a technological glitch. Others see it as something more mysterious or symbolic, particularly given that the calls stopped just before his body was found.

This story has captivated many people and is often cited in discussions about unexplained phenomena related to death and technology.
