Sarah is spending her summer in Maine interning at a gallery; with limited time and connections, she turns to Tinder to help her find friends in this beautiful state. In episode three Sarah travels to Rockland, ME to meet Drew Cornwall, photographer and current teaching assistant/instructor at Maine Media Workshops + College.

As a visual artist, Sarah understands the value of having high quality images of her work but she hardly knows a thing about the field of photography. The two artists sit down to discuss how Drew came to be a photographer, his mixed bag of jobs, and his affiliation with Maine Media Workshops + College.

Photographer Drew Cornwall

Drew Cornwall is a versatile artist, educator and technician based in Rockland, Maine. After freelancing in Florida and contributing to several publications, he received a BFA in Photography from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) where his portfolio developed work including commercial and fine art imagery. His personal work ranges from portraiture to landscapes utilizing both digital and analog techniques. Working with professional photographers Joyce Tenneson, Cig Harvey and John Paul Caponigro, has influenced his focus to remain on the fine art. Over the past few years, his passion for storytelling dovetailed into his latest projects that touch on personal and cultural subject matters throughout eastern regions of the United States. Featured by the Society for Photographic Education and Maine Media Workshops, he photographs with the intent to educate and inspire others. With a high energy to collaborate and draw connections, he continues to engage with his camera in order to better understand life and the world we live in.

My First Craft Show: Advice from Rea Rossi

In the second episode of Perceived Value Sarah Rachel Brown sits down with artist Rea Rossi to discuss her experience exhibiting as an Emerging Artist at the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Craft Show.

In June Sarah received the news that she has been accepted as an Emerging Artist for this year's PMA Craft Show taking place November 9-12th. This will be Sarah's first craft show experience; she's a bit overwhelmed and is hoping Rea can clarify a few details for her.

The two jewelers discuss what exactly a craft show is, why they chose to apply, and how much money Sarah can plan on investing into this experience. Doing shows of this caliber is expensive - but the payoff can go far beyond one's bank account.

Sarah's advisor, Rea Rossi

Rea was born and raised in Philadelphia. She earned her B.F.A. in Metal and Jewelry Design from Rochester Institute of Technology, School for American Crafts in 2009. R.I.T. is also home to the National Technical Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Having been raised mainstream, Rea was not exposed to very many people with hearing loss outside her immediate family. In college Rea became fluent in American Sign Language and immersed herself in the Deaf community in Rochester and then in Philadelphia when she moved back home after graduating. In 2011, Rea earned her M.F.A. from Temple University, Tyler School of Art in Metals/Jewelry and Computer Aided Design. Currently she works full time as the Shop Supervisor at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia for the Jewelry program. Rea frequently exhibits her work nationally and internationally, teaches workshops around the Philadelphia area and has a home based studio practice.

In episode four host Sarah Rachel Brown takes a trip to meet members of the Metals Collective; a Portland, Maine based group of makers whose mission is to promote the craft of metalsmithing & jewelry through collaboration, growth, and public engagement.

Sarah sits down with the secretary of the Metals Collective, Shelby Goldsmith. The two women discuss how the collective came to be, what it takes to be a member, and the value of creating your own community.

Founded in 2010, the Metals Collective has produced over 10 group exhibitions, featuring over 20 different makers. For each show, a theme or historical object is selected for participating members to respond to. Through the collaborative nature of the Metals Collective, each artist is encouraged to create work that is outside the bounds of their regular studio practice, resulting in individual artistic growth. By bringing handmade art jewelry and objects to view in public spaces, the Metals Collective engages the community with explorations of historical content and contemporary metalsmithing practices. Members range from fresh graduates to seasoned professionals.

Shelby Goldsmith earned her BFA in Metalsmithing & Jewelry ('14) from Maine College of Art, where she went on to work as a Continuing Studies studio technician & instructor. She is an active core member of the Metals Collective*, for which she serves as the secretary. She resides in Maine, where she is working on building her own studio practice. Having recently received a Belvedere Fund to outfit her home studio, she is working on converting her antique hayloft into a workspace.
