Balancing the Risks: Examining the $7 Trillion AI Funding Request and its Implications

Good morning from OWITH.ai: the podcast that gives you only what's important to hear in AI and tech world. Today, we'll be discussing an article that presents seven reasons why the world should reject Sam Altman's request for $7 trillion to fund his artificial intelligence (AI) project. The first reason mentioned in the article is the enormous amount of energy that would be required to run AI infrastructure at full capacity. This would have significant environmental implications, which is a concern that cannot be ignored.Moving on to the second reason, we find that the strain on natural resources, particularly water consumption, has already been observed in previous AI projects. This raises concerns about sustainability and the potential impact on our already limited resources. The third reason presented is the economic resources that would be needed to fund such a project. The amount far exceeds what is currently spent on schools or addressing world hunger, highlighting the magnitude of the investment being proposed.Next, we come to the fourth reason, which is the financial risk associated with such a large investment. A failure in this project could have devastating effects on the global economy, which is a risk that should not be taken lightly.Moving on to the fifth reason, we learn about the negative impact on human intellectual capital. AI projects often require exemptions from copyright, which could harm artists and creators. This raises important questions about the balance between technological advancement and protecting human creativity. The sixth reason mentioned in the article is the negative externalities that AI projects often do not account for. These can include disinformation and cybercrimes, which have become increasingly prevalent in our digital age. It is crucial to address these issues before embarking on such a massive investment in AI.Lastly, the article argues that rushing to invest such a large sum of money into AI is premature. There are still many unknowns and risks associated with this technology that need to be carefully considered. The author suggests that safety and innovation should be prioritized in AI development instead of reckless expansionism. In conclusion, the article sheds light on the potential dangers and drawbacks of investing such a large amount of money into AI projects without thorough consideration. It is important to weigh the potential benefits against the risks and ensure that the development of AI is done responsibly.

Disruptive Cyberattacks, Programming in English, Robinhood's Growth, Family Offices' Shifting Focus, Demand for Moral Leadership, and Design in AI: Today's News from OWITH.ai

Good morning from OWITH.ai: the podcast that gives you only what's important to hear in the AI and tech world. Today, we have some significant news to share with you. Let's dive in.Chinese state-sponsored hacking group, Volt Typhoon, is said to be positioning itself to disrupt US critical infrastructure in the event of a conflict with the US. Cybersecurity researchers and security agencies have been tracking the group's activities since mid-2021. They have discovered that Volt Typhoon has been gaining access to the networks of critical infrastructure providers, aiming to disrupt US-Asia communications during crisis situations. This has raised concerns among the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, consisting of the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. They have warned that Volt Typhoon has been preparing for "disruptive or destructive cyberattacks against US critical infrastructure" for at least five years. Sectors such as communications, energy, transportation, water, and waste treatment systems have already been compromised. It is alarming to think that this group may cause real-world harm to American citizens and communities. Now let's move on to another interesting topic. Have you ever thought about programming in English as a new programming language? It seems like a dream for many developers as it would eliminate the need to learn specific programming languages and allow them to think in their native language. However, despite attempts to achieve this, it hasn't been successful yet. Charles Simonyi founded a startup called Intentional Software in 2002 with the goal of allowing developers to specify their requirements without writing code. Unfortunately, the company was eventually sold back to Microsoft without widespread success. While there are AI models like GPT-4 that incorporate programming in English as part of their system, there are concerns about these models not always following instructions correctly. It seems like programming in English still faces many challenges before becoming a reality. Now let's shift our focus to Robinhood. Their Q4 earnings report showed a return to profitability and promised significant growth in the coming years. This news has driven up the company's shares by around 20%. The increased crypto and equity transactions, as well as a surge in interest-related revenue, have contributed to this positive outcome. However, it's important to note that relying on interest revenue can pose a potential risk due to fluctuating interest rates. While Robinhood's narrative of becoming a full-service brokerage for the next generation looks achievable, it still has a long way to go to compete with major players like Fidelity and Charles Schwab. In other news, family offices are increasingly shifting their investment focus towards alternative investments. According to data collected by private equity firm KKR and Henry McVey, the average family office now allocates 52% of its portfolio to alternatives. This marks an increase of 200 basis points since 2020. The pursuit of alpha and the compatibility of long-term investments with alternative assets are driving this trend. Family offices are gravitating towards top brand names in the growth and buyouts sectors when it comes to fundraising. However, emerging managers can also find opportunities if they can demonstrate a track record of successful exits.Moving on, we have some insights into the demand for moral leadership in business. A survey by the How Institute for Moral Leadership has found that while the demand for moral leadership is increasing, the supply is decreasing. The survey reveals that 93% of respondents believe there is a "high demand" for moral leadership in business. However, only 10% of CEOs ranked in the top tier of
