In this episode, I got to talk with Dr. Vern Poythress about his new book, Making Sense of Man. Vern is a distinguished professor of New Testament, biblical interpretation, and systematic theology at Westminster Theological Seminary. He received his PhD from Harvard University, his M.Div and ThM from Westminster Theological Seminary, his M.Litt from Cambridge University, and his Th.D from Stellenbosch University. Dr. Poythress has published books on many different topics including, Logic: A God-Centered Approach to the Foundation of Western Thought, Redeeming Mathematics: A God-Centered Approach, and In The Beginning Was The Word: Language--A God-Centered Approach. Vern also served as chair of the ESV Oversight Committee's New Testament section.
In our conversation, Vern and I discussed his book, Making Sense of Man. We talked about how he approached writing a book on the doctrine of man, what it means to be made in the image of God, and how Christians should interact with language and liturgy. We also talked about why confessional Christianity might be better than non-denominationalism. I hope you enjoy!

In this episode, I respond to a recent video made by Gavin Ortlund called, “Are Catholics Christians? Why Protestants Can Say YES”. Gavin argues that early Reformation theologians like Martin Luther and John Calvin both believed that Catholics are saved. He also makes a postmodern argument for church unity.
In my response, I cover John Calvin’s actual thoughts on whether Catholics can be considered “Christians”. I talk about the problems with elitist “intellectuals” like Gavin Ortlund ripping old theologians out of context to push a postmodern, liberal narrative. I also discuss the dangers of referring to church history and old theologians before referencing the Bible. I give a more detailed breakdown of the Catholic and Protestant doctrines of justification and how they are fundamentally opposed to each other. Finally, I talk about what the Bible has to say about people like Gavin Ortlund who distort doctrine and words for personal gain. I hope you enjoy!

#118 // Dr. Samuel Parkison | The Transfiguration And The Substance Of The Glorified Christian
Orthodoxy
10/04/24 • 120 min
In this episode, I got to talk with Dr. Samuel Parkison. Dr. Parkison has his M.Div, Th.M., and Ph.D. from the Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is currently the Associate Professor of Theological Studies at Gulf Theological Seminary in the United Arab Emirates. He has authored several books including Proclaiming the Triune God: The Doctrine of the Trinity in the Life of the Church, Irresistible Beauty: Beholding Triune Glory in the Face of Jesus Christ, and his newest book, To Gaze Upon God: The Beatific Vision in Doctrine, Tradition, and Practice.
Dr. Parkison and I discussed the lost beatific doctrine. We talked about what it is, where it can be seen in Scripture, and how the doctrine has developed through church history. We also discussed the transfiguration of Christ and the theological implications of that event. Finally, we talked about the glory and substance found in the glorified Christian in Heaven. I hope you enjoy!

In this episode, I got to talk with Dr. Christopher Yuan. Dr. Yuan is a scholar, author, and the founder of the Holy Sexuality Project. Christopher tells his testimony about how he went from being a gay, drug dealing convict, in prison for the possession of 9.1 tons of marijuana to repenting of his sins and following Christ. Dr. Yuan has taught at Moody Bible Institute for 12 years and has a doctorate of ministry along with his Masters in Biblical Exegesis and his undergraduate degree.
He has written several books including one that he co-wrote with his mom, Out of a far Country: A Gay Son’s Journey to God, A Broken Mother’s Search for Hope, this book has been translated to 7 languages and has sold over 100,000 copies. He also wrote a book called Holy Sexuality and the Gospel: Sex, Desire, and Relationships Shaped by God’s Grand Story. Right now, Christopher is working on the Holy Sexuality Project. This project is an online training on Biblical sexuality made for families. This includes a 12 part class on Holy Sexuality with animated videos made by the animators at the Bible Project.
My conversation with Dr. Yuan was wide ranging, as we discussed his testimony, indwelling sin, the nature of man, sexual identity vs. a Biblical, Christ-centered identity, Gay people’s desire to maintain a gay ethos while claiming to be Christian, and much more. I hope you enjoy!
