Only in OKlahoma Show

Harley Covington and Brett Manzer

Howdy Y’all...just kidding! Welcome to our page. We are the Only in Oklahoma Show, where you can hear about travel and entertainment in the Great State of Oklahoma. Our sole purpose is to shine a light on some of the people, places and stories that make Oklahoma, more than just “OK”. In fact, Oklahoma is one of the most underrated travel destinations in the country even by some of the locals. Powered by award winning podcasters (2018 Podcast Award – Society and Culture), Harley C. and Brett Manzer. Tune into the Only in Oklahoma Show to hear interviews, news and reviews about Oklahoma’s best restaurants, hotels, festivals, museums, outdoor activities, breweries, rodeos, concerts, casinos, Route 66, and more (literally this list is endless). If it’s fun and in Oklahoma, we will be talking about it. We will also be covering some not so topics, like bureaucrats, bridges, toll booths and taxes. If it affects your bottom line or your lake time, we will be cussin’ and discussin’. If you are joining us from the Odd Pod, some things never change. Manzer and Harley will be trying to make you laugh while dropping some knowledge about the places we cover. Don’t worry, we will still be covering the occasional red-dirt ghost story, cryptid, and UFO conspiracy...as long as it is north of the Red River (BOOMER!). Boots and straps and cowboy hats are optional. Welcome to the Only in Oklahoma Show!

Where is the best view in the state?   On today's episode of the Only in OK Show, we had a great discussion with Nelson King, the General Manager & Owner of White Dog Hill in Clinton.   We also touched on the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum in ClintonWater-Zoo Indoor Water Park in Clinton, The Tiki Hut at OkarcheEischen's Bar in Okarche and DiCintio's Pizza Cucina in Marlow.   White Dog Hill is a restaurant in Clinton, OK on old RT 66.  Known for their beautiful sunsets and imaginative menu. Nelson King put together a first-class eatery in the former Clinton Country Club.  Enjoy your steak, salad or desserts on their patio to get the full effect of the Oklahoma scenery.   Oklahoma Route 66 Museum in Clinton, Oklahoma was redesigned in 2012 to offer visitors a personal journey through the history of the nation’s most revered highway. Encounter the iconic ideas, images, and myths of the Mother Road. Learn about the dreams and labor needed to make the road a reality. Experience the Dust Bowl as thousands streamed along the road, away from drought and despair and towards the “land of promise”. Listen to the sounds of the Big Band Era, when the roar of the big trucks and the welcome home cries to returning soldiers dominated the road. Touch the counter and sit in the booth of the 1950’s diner and feel the open road as America’s families vacationed along the length of Route 66. The museum also offers changing special exhibits, focusing on the Route 66 experience.   The Water-Zoo Indoor Water Park, opened in 2012, is the only indoor water park in Oklahoma and it is opened year round! It is located right off Interstate 40 in Clinton, Oklahoma. The 28,000 square foot water park features a retractable roof enclosure by that can be opened in warm weather, offering visitors a wonderful fresh air experience. Only in OKlahoma Show - Video - Christmas in the Park - Yukon, Oklahoma
play

12/10/21 • 2 min

Yukon's Christmas in the Park offers a beautiful lighted drive through three interconnecting parks. Yukon's Chisholm Trail, Freedom Trail and city parks make up over 100 acres of Christmas cheer that include over 500 displays and five million lights. Highlights of this beloved holiday event include the 50-ft, multi-colored, lighted Christmas tree, the Santa Express Train ride and an ice skating rink.

Start your journey through a magnificent arch that reads “Christmas in the Park” and follow the winding path through three interconnected parks transformed into a winter wonderland. There are three ways to enjoy Christmas in the Park. Motorists from the contiguous 48 states have driven through this wonderland. Twinkling animated displays amuse as you leisurely make your way through, while LED displays synchronized with music wow young and old alike.

Guest can get up-close and personal to the lights with a walking tour. The romantic pond area in Chisholm Trail Park is ideal for a winter date. There is even a “Will You Marry Me?” sign for guests who are ready to pop the question.

The Christmas in the Park Train Station is the junction of tasty treats, selfie spots and an ice skating rink. For a small fee, the Santa Express takes guests on a tour of the lights that adorn Chisholm Trail Park.
Seeing the magnificence of millions of lights over three inter-connected parks, no one would guess that it started out as a handful of displays around the Yukon Community Center.

One of the reasons that Christmas in the Park is so special is that every large sponsored display is specifically designed by the sponsor. So, you won’t be able to find it anywhere else. If you look closely, each display tells a Christmas-themed story about the person, business or organization that designed it.

Christmas in the Park is one of the oldest and most popular traditions in Yukon. Yukon's three lighted parks are great for tour buses or anyone searching for the ultimate holiday experience. Admission to Christmas in the Park is free; however, donations are merrily accepted.

Only in OKlahoma Show - Amish Cheese House - Chouteau, Oklahoma
play

03/13/23 • 26 min

No cheesy jokes, because it's gouda brie a good day.

Today we are discussing the Amish Cheese House in Chouteau, OK.

The Amish Cheese House in a 7,200-square-foot building houses a family-owned restaurant featuring delicious sandwiches made from freshly baked bread, tasty meats and dozens of cheeses from the local Amish community, as well as those in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Not sure what to have? No problem – take advantage of the free samples. But don’t leave without loading up on the other fine products, ranging from homemade noodles and fudge to cider and cheese balls. Better yet, take home a gift set for a friend or loved one.

Chouteau is located in the old Cooweescoowee District of the Cherokee Nation in southern Mayes County. It has an altitude of 627 feet. Chouteau is a gateway to the eastern Oklahoma lake area, featuring Fort Gibson Lake, Upper and Lower Spavinaw Lakes, the Lake of the Cherokees (Grand Lake), and the Lake Hudson Recreational Area. State Highway 412 (Cherokee Turnpike) and U.S Highway 69 intersect just south of town.

In 1871, when the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway built its line across Indian Territory, Chouteau became a terminus. Riley W. Lindsey, the first agent, was also the first settler. Chouteau grew into a thriving cattle town, and residents built a fence around its limits to keep the herds out of the streets. Gates were conveniently located, and parents escorted their children safely to and from downtown. Many of the early citizens lived in tents, and they too built fences to keep out cattle.

The town had to be rebuilt after a fire in 1891, and in 1985 much of the business district was again destroyed by fire. Businesses moved to the east side of Highway 69. In 1880 Lindsey provided the land and financed Chouteau's first school, a subscription school, housed in a one-room building. In later years the school was razed, and a larger, two-story, wood-frame building was erected on the same site, sheltering another subscription school. Several denominations used these facilities for church services, and citizens used them for various town meetings. Today the Chouteau-Mazie School District comprises kindergarten through grade twelve and operates with a staff of fifty-eight teachers and administrators.

The town's population has varied, ranging from 483 in 1900 and 541 in 1920 to a twentieth-century low of 400 in 1940. The number of inhabitants rebounded to 1,046 in 1970 and grew to 1,771 in 1990. By 2000 the town sheltered a population of 1,931, and the 2010 census reported 2,097 inhabitants. Chouteau has supported twelve churches of various denominations. The United Methodist is the oldest congregation, and the First Presbyterian the oldest church building, dedicated on July 10, 1898. The Farmers and Merchants Bank (NR 83002091) and the Territorial Commercial District of Chouteau, Main Street, (NR 83002093) are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. With the location of the Mid-American Industrial Area between Chouteau and Pryor, a Chouteau Hills housing addition has added approximately 170 new homes. Many residents prefer to live in the small community and to commute to work in the larger towns and cities. State Highway 412 and U.S. Highway 69 provide easy access for commuters.
