Quotes:

“You can learn hair and makeup but you can’t really learn being at the wedding and all of the things that you have to overcome unless you’ve been in it a number of years.”

“It takes me two years to teach a potential employee to be a lead [artist or stylist] on a wedding.”

“This is the one time the bride has to look good both in person and on camera.”

“What a lot of brides don’t realize is that they need to be done with hair & makeup three to four hours before the wedding if they are having a first look.”

“We really encourage our brides to speak up -- to tell us what you like, tell us what you don’t like because we have about three hours to get to know in that trial session.”

“We love when you have a trial and then go get your dress fitted because you really get to see it all come together.”

“You don’t do the bride last because if anything is running behind, you don’t want to rush on the bride.”

“We’re going to do some of the prep work on the bride first, then work with some of the members of the wedding party. Then, we’ll bring the bride back to do her finishing work that way you can see her walk around and see if there’s anything you want to tweak.”

“The best place to do makeup is front of a window.”

“We don’t charge extra if we do airbrush, we don’t charge extra if we put lashes on. When I come, it’s a day rate and you get my whole book of experience. I don’t hold anything back for ean extra $15 or an extra $50.”

“I train all of my artists to take a picture [of the makeup] with and without flash.”

“I had a photographer tell me once, ‘Alayne, it doesn’t matter how much hairspray you use, if their hair is down and it’s a humid day by the end of the night it just doesn’t look good.’ So I usually recommend that if you’re wanting to do two dresses and two different hairstyles, wear it down initially and then let us put it up.”

“There’s no feedback that’s bad or that we want to be afraid of. We want feedback, we want to get better, we want to grow every year.”

JEN GLANTZ

Bridesmaid For Hire

EPISODE 14 SHOW NOTES

HIRING A BRIDESMAID

THE GAL PAL YOU NEVER KNEW YOU NEEDED

After standing beside so many brides throughout their wedding planning process over the past couple of years, Jen Glantz witnessed firsthand the stress that brides, and bridesmaids, experience and decided that there was a need in the wedding industry that wasn’t being fulfilled yet. That’s why she decided to write the Craigslist ad offering her services as a professional bridesmaid. After receiving an overwhelming response, she decided to turn it into an actual business in 2014, Bridesmaid for Hire, and wrote about the real-life adventures she found herself front and center at in the new book, Always a Bridesmaid (For Hire), available now.

How Jen got started as a professional bridesmaid?

Does she actually walk down the aisle as a bridesmaid?

Does she keep in contact with the brides after the wedding?

What are the services she offers?

The difference between her and a wedding planner?

Quotes:

“I definitely walk down the aisle as a bridesmaid. It’s called “Bridesmaid For Hire” so people do hire me to be their bridesmaid, to put on the dress and walk down the aisle.”

“I am not a wedding planner in disguise. I am the people person in the wedding industry. I’m there to work with people and help them get through a very stressful day while taking on the role of their bridesmaid.”

“It is a real, genuine connection.”

“A lot of the reason people hire me is to put out fires or because they know they need support. A lot of my job is managing people.”

“I’m not the one you are hiring to set up your wedding and make your flowers look pretty. I’m the one you are hiring for real, honest advice with no strings attached.”

“Wedding nerves make people feel lots of different things and sometimes they may make them question the person they are marrying.”

“I wear the dress, I walk down the aisle, and give speeches.”

EPISODE 16 SHOW NOTES

WILD-NATURED FLORAL ARTISTRY

DESIGN FLORAL EXPRESSIONS FOR YOUR BIG DAY

I’ve spent my life seeking to interpret the fleeting beauty and bounty of the world around us. I grew up in the Midwest with a curious and adventurous heart, endlessly digging in the dirt, gardening and hunting/camping with my father. After studying fine art and beginning my career as an artist, I soon realized my life’s passion was to cultivate the ways in which art and nature nourish and uplift the human body and spirit.

Sweet Thorn Flora designs floral expressions for the moments we long to hold on to, feelings we wish to linger on our minds and in our hearts. Our creations unite varied textures, colors and shapes that interplay deep and bright, soft and sharp to create a lasting impression.

You can learn more about Sweet Thorn Flora:

How was she introduced to floral design?

Why florals are an important aspect of your wedding?

How the arrangements last longer than the initial event that they were designed for?

Where can couples find good DIY inspiration?

How far out should couples contact their florist?

What the booking process looks like?

What couples should expect on the day of the wedding?

Quotes:

“I want to give them something that is going to be memorable.”

“I cannot guarantee that I can get that exact flower if it’s out of season because I don’t use anything that isn’t at its peak.”

“As a designer in general, you want everything to be as cohesive and complimentary as possible so if they ask me for suggestions on a napkin color, I will give it.”

“Don’t be scared to have the flowers you want. People say that the flowers don’t last but they really do. They last in your head. They last in the feeling they give people. They last for your guests. They last in the video and in the photographs. They last for a long time.”

“Flowers extract emotion from people. You can just look at them and feel happier.”

“What’s nice about florals is that there are so many ways to make a statement minimally. You don’t have to have over the top flowers to make a statement.”

“The longer that I have with the client and the longer that they have with me the more satisfied and set they will be for the event.”

“When a client puts down the booking deposit, that books them for that day. It’s their day & they are my only client.”

“When you have flowers around your house, whether dried or alive, they are beneficial for you to see and be around.”

“Whatever part of the event is the most important to you, start there and put your money there & then allocate the rest of it.”
