Barriers to Building Emotional Intelligence with Dr Rebecca Heiss
No Bullsh!t Leadership
07/25/23 • 31 min
Episode #256 // The concept of EQ isn’t new. It was the subject of academic research way back in the 1960s, but it took another 30 years before we gained widespread awareness of it through Daniel Goleman’s classic book, Emotional Intelligence.
These days, we have fairly robust tests to measure a person's EQ, and I would never hire a senior executive without having them take those tests... it’s not the be-all-and-end-all, but it does provide another data point to calibrate the observations you make in other parts of the recruitment and selection process.
What are the barriers to building your own EQ? To deal with this question, I’ve enlisted the aid of Dr Rebecca Heiss, who’s an expert in all things human behavior and leadership. Her book, Instinct, is all about how to rewire our brains to remove some of the barriers to success.
This fascinating discussion may help you to break through some of the barriers that are holding you back.

What the Best Leaders Do Differently with Scott J. Miller
No Bullsh!t Leadership
07/11/23 • 48 min
Episode #254 // We’re approached all the time to interview other thought leaders on this podcast. However, since No Bullsh!t Leadership is predominantly a solo cast, we reluctantly decline 99% of these requests.
But one email popped into our Inbox a few months ago, and we couldn’t resist it: Scott Jeffrey Miller is a speaker, author, and podcaster (sounds familiar, I know!)
What’s different about Scott is that he’s worked for over 25 years with FranklinCovey, the legendary company started by Stephen Covey, which has not one, but three seminal works to draw upon:
- The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
- The Speed of Trust, and
- The 4 Disciplines of Execution (one of my favorites).
Scott has worked with these original thought leaders for decades, and as host of FranklinCovey’s On Leadership podcast, he’s had access to some of the best-known and highest-profile leaders on the planet.
In today’s interview, I drill into Scott’s deep learning, asking him what it’s like to interview the biggest names in business; his experience of writing best-selling books; and what’s in store for the future of leadership.
Check out Scott's new book here!

Your Leadership User Manual: Clarifying expectations for success
No Bullsh!t Leadership
08/01/23 • 19 min
Episode #257 // I came across an article by Shanna Hocking, which introduced me to the concept of the Leadership User Manual. Hocking credits its origins to Adam Bryant, who wrote an article almost 10 years ago titled, What if you had to write a user manual about your leadership style?
Imagine the power of a physical document that can help your people to understand how they can best work with you. What a great idea!
Knowing how your boss operates, and what he values, could save you years of guesswork, as the only other way to work it out is through trial and error. I wish I’d thought of this years ago!
In this episode, I take a deep dive into the concept of the leadership user manual. I look at the benefits and risks, and I take you along the journey with me as I develop my own inaugural leadership user manual.
We’ve also created a leadership user manual template, a free download, so that you can develop your own guide.

Building a Better Mousetrap: The productivity reality
No Bullsh!t Leadership
07/18/23 • 18 min
Episode #255 // Ralph Waldo Emerson once said: “Build a better mousetrap, and the world will beat a path to your door!”. This quote, espousing the value of innovation, has been liberally used and abused over the years.
I came across it again recently in an article from McKinsey: Turning Around the Productivity Slowdown... so, what is productivity? And what’s the relationship between productivity and innovation?
In today’s episode, I look at productivity from a number of different angles. What does it mean in the world of macroeconomics? How does productivity impact our standard of living?
On a day-to-day level, what does it mean for your type of industry and organization? Can productivity provide a competitive advantage?
It doesn’t matter what type of organization you’re leading in, improving productivity will reap huge benefits for all your stakeholders... including the people who work for you.
But, getting your head around why you should have a constant focus on productivity improvement can be a little tricky... hopefully this episode will help.

Moment #25: Why Management Teams Become Stale
No Bullsh!t Leadership
07/16/23 • 4 min
Moment #25 // High-performance is fragile. Teams can lose their lustre for a whole range of reasons, and leading a team of high performers can be incredibly challenging.
The best teams push each other pretty hard, and it can be difficult to maintain constructive tension, without it boiling over into acrimony.
And, yes, sometimes your people just stop listening to you. Over time, familiarity breeds contempt, and the downside of consistency (a much sought-after leadership characteristic) is predictability.
You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.99: Don't Play One Season Too Many.

Moment #26: From Individual Contributor to Leader
No Bullsh!t Leadership
07/23/23 • 4 min
Moment #26 // Of the many mistakes that new leaders are prone to make, over-functioning for certain individuals is one of the most common, and the most insidious.
When you do this, it tells your people that what they're doing isn't good enough. It trains them to be lazy and complacent, because you'll always step in to finish their job for them if you’re not happy. And they'll keep getting paid for not doing their job to the standard you expect.
Excellent leaders give their people clarity of purpose, resources, coaching, and autonomy. They lead people to do their jobs—they don’t do their jobs for them.
You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.172: Stop Doing Your People's Work, or by reading my article in Harvard Business Review.

Moment #27: Defining Weak Leadership
No Bullsh!t Leadership
07/30/23 • 4 min
Moment #27 // Weak leaders are characterized by what they’re not prepared to do.
Weak leaders are unwilling to push back on the boss; they don't put the team's interests ahead of their own; they’re unwilling to set ambitious goals; they’re afraid to challenge, coach, and confront their people; and they’re reluctant to challenge the status quo.
What's the price of leadership weakness? Unrealized potential; poor performance; lack of market competitiveness.
Eventually, this leads to job cuts, restructures, and redundancies. And in some cases, the company won’t survive. Weak leaders allow performance to slip, and the outcomes are entirely predictable.
You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.68: The Price Of Leadership Weakness.

Performance Reviews: Valuable or destructive?
No Bullsh!t Leadership
06/30/20 • 17 min
Episode #96 // As we’ve just hit the end of the Australian 2020 Financial Year, a lot of our local listeners are about to step into the performance review cycle, and go through the gruelling schedule of meetings, documentation, and feedback.
Episode #96 // This episode examines the trend of major companies going away from the annual performance review process, and replacing it with regular, timely feedback from leaders to their people at all levels of the organization.
What could possibly go wrong?
In this episode I take a deep dive into the performance review cycle, looking at some of the pros and cons, and what you need to do to ensure it remains a valuable tool for your organization.

Managing Natural Tensions: The balance of value
No Bullsh!t Leadership
11/24/20 • 17 min
Episode #117 // Every organisation inherently has a number of natural tensions between different groups and functions - finance vs marketing; sales vs operations; operations vs asset management; IT and... virtually everyone!
Rather than trying to eliminate these tensions, leaders should concentrate on using them to get better outcomes. It’s through nurturing and managing natural tensions that you’ll find a balance - this will improve your decision-making, and ultimately create the greatest value for your organisation.
There are no black-and-white answers to this question, but there are some practical principles and philosophies you can employ. In this episode, I provide some useful tips for managing natural tensions in order to improve the value outcomes of your team.
