Diet Culture in Disguise
06/10/20 • 68 min
Join Hannah and Tareq as they discuss diet culture red flags on social media and beyond. They talk about things on a social media profile that make bad first impressions on them and how some people co-opting non-diet messaging to make a buck while shadily promoting diet behaviour and weight stigma. This is also Tareq’s first Brain Bite! Instead of the usual BS of the Week, Tareq shares some new data about plant chemicals called flavonoids and how recent research shows how they might decrease risk of Alzheimer’s disease. But are these flavonoids really offering a brain boost?? Okay fine!! I guess there was a bit of BS busting in there! We can’t help it!

This week’s episode is all about thin privilege! Oh yes, hun, you better believe it exists! It’s real and we are not only talking about it, but recognizing that we ourselves have it. “Straight-size” (listen to hear the definition!) people have many privileges in their lives even if they are not actively perpetuating weight stigma. Our society is unfortunately filled with systemic obstacles that discriminate against people for many things including body size. Hannah gives definitions & examples that centre our conversation while Tareq turns to the literature on body weight discrimination in the workplace. Did you know that fat people are less likely to be called in for job interviews, irrespective of qualifications? We finish our talk by discussing how we can be allies rather than feel defeated.
