WORD OF THE DAY:
Bhangini : an ancient sanskrit and hindi word for cannabis translating to "breaks three kinds of misery”.
HIGH SCIENCE/RESEARCH FINDINGS:
The article for today’s High Science, is a trip through the wayback machine to 1975 and covers a foundational study documenting the so-called "slingshot effect”, a term used to describe the effects of taking THC and CBD together, which has been described on social media and other anecdotal reports.
Science Article Title:
Interactions in Man of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol - Cannabinol and Cannabidiol
• When taken orally CBD can delay onset, increase duration and intensity of THC
• This occurs because CBD can block the liver metabolism of drugs
• The effect appears slight in this study
Source:https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1097148
More Notes on the 75’ study:
Oral doses of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) 20 mg, combined with placebo or with 40 mg doses of cannabinol (CBN) and cannabidiol (CBD), were given to volunteers. The combination of THC with CBN produced no detectable changes in the quality, intensity, or duration of the effects of THC alone. The THC-CBD combination tended to delay onset and prolong effects of THC, while making them somewhat more intense. Even this interactive effect was slight, providing no reason to abandon the current practice of basing doses of marihuana for clinical studies solely on THC content. At the very most, the presence of comparatively large amounts of CBD in combination with THC may have increased slightly its clinical effects. CBD has been reported to be a potent inhibitor of hydroxylating enzymes. Such an action could delay formation of the Il-hydroxymetabolite, one which is known to be somewhat more potent than the parent substance. This action might also delay formation of dihydroxymetabolites, which are generally assumed to be inactive. Thus, the clinically observed slower onset and longer duration of the THC-CBD combination might possibly be explained by this mechanism.

After some very serious comments about how she was treated, She quipped to the media, appearing with her lawyer, in an interview, that “I thought that chipmunk was following me but I kept telling myself not to be so paranoid.”BUT WHAT IS TRUE...is that the Grandmother, Hester Burkhalter, is threatening to sue Disney and Orange county police of Florida, represented by Civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump. Charges were dropped, but she is suing over things like spending 12 hours in jail while waiting to post bail...

- Research Focus/High Science:
Given popular stereotypes that cannabis use is associated with a lack of motivation and, indeed, extreme sedentary behavior (c.f., “couch lock”), increased cannabis use could worsen the sedentary lifestyle epidemic that the US is currently facing. On the other hand, cannabis use is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency because of its potential to improve sports performance, and numerous reports in the popular press suggest that endurance athletes utilize cannabis in their training. Such conflicting ideas about the relationship between cannabis use and physical activity necessitate further investigation into how cannabis use may affect factors associated with regular physical activity participation.

MS patients taking cannabis were able to reduce intake of opioids and benzodiazepines
According to a retrospective chart review of 77 patients diagnosed with multiple sclerosis treatment with cannabis allowed one third to reduce the intake of other medications, including opioids. Scientists of Dent Neurologic Institute Amherst in New York, USA, published their study results In the Journal Neurology.
Subjective improvement endorsed by patients was extensive, with alleviation of pain (71%), spasticity (43%), and sleep (42%). In addition, 34% of patients were able to decrease or discontinue other medications including opioids, stimulants, and benzodiazepines. A low rate of discontinuation (14%) was observed, most frequently due to cost (36%) and lack of efficacy (36%).

HIGH SCIENCE/RESEARCH FINDINGS: Thank you to Sarah Russo and Dan Goldman for both texting me about this article and bringing it to my attention.https://www.leafly.com/news/health/cbd-can-help-with-heroin-addiction-study-findsResearchers in NYC (Shout to Mount Sinai) teamed up with a team in Spain. Dr. Yasmin Hurd is one of the authors of the paper, she is a colleague of mine. I have hosted panels that she has been on. She’s one of the enlightened drug abuse researchers. And someone I am hoping to work with on some of the institutes work. The work was published in the journal of neuroscience this week.TAKE HOME MESSAGE: The study in rats, translated into its human potential could mean that after abstaining from opioid use for a time, CBD could prevent relapse. But may have no effect on first wave of opioid addiction, CBD may not prevent the development of addiction but may help break the cycle or relapse after abstinence.Cannabis and its benefits remain controversial Reports exist showing THC can both help or hurt regarding opioid use
Little research exists on CBD’s effect on opioid or heroin use Rats were trained to self- administer heroin, they learned very quickly Rats
were trained using environment cues Rats were given CBD during different phases of drug abuse cycle drug addiction cycle involves maintenance, extinction, and relapse CBD has no effect on any part of opioid use during first part of experiment After two weeks off of heroin, rats were challenged in “treatment tank” CBD protected rats from seeking out morphine when placed back in the “treatment tank” The effect lasted two weeks- which is amazing

Did you know JFK smoked pot in the white house? While in the white house he suffered from severe back pain and addison’s disease, some claim Kennedy used cannabis to treat his conditions but there is no supporting evidence for this myth. He was taking several medications to help him function.“On the evening of July 16, 1962, according to [Washington Post executive] Jim Truitt, Kennedy and Mary Meyer smoked marijuana together. ... The president smoked three of the six joints Mary brought to him. At first he felt no effects. ”According to Mr. Truitt, “They smoked three of the joints before he (J.F.K.) told her: ‘No more. Suppose the Russians did something now.'”The most widely referenced account of Kennedy’s supposed marijuana use was not primarily linked with his health or with medical treatment. Rather, it was an anecdotal account of JFK’s supposedly being introduced to recreational pot use by one of his mistresses that was published in the National Enquirer tabloid in 1976 and referenced in the 1984 book The Kennedys: An American Drama by Peter Collier and David Horowitz. That latter work drew the following criticism in the aforementioned New York Times lette...If you like this episode you’ll love
