In this episode I discuss the expectations that South Asian parents tend to have for their children, particularly when it comes to marriage. I share my personal experience of my mother wanting me to marry a UK national and talk about a friend who had a negative experience when they married someone from their ethnic country. I also talk about the importance of compatibility when it comes to marriage, as well as the importance of respecting someone’s religious beliefs. In addition, I cover the different expectations that exist within the Muslim community when it comes to marriage, including the same religious background, education, and language as well as physical attributes. I also discuss the concept of arranged marriages and the stigma around dating within the Muslim community. I emphasize the importance of finding a partner who is both attractive and supportive, as well as the importance of understanding someone’s background and culture. Lastly, I touch on the idea of raising children to be respectful and understanding of their culture and religion.
