MProper Mimi - Sip From Your Couch - Black Women in Wine

Sip From Your Couch - Black Women in Wine

MProper Mimi
Episode 15: Ah the world of wine is so vast! For many of us, when it comes to buying a bottle of wine, it's hit or miss and we might purchase based on the pretty label or a recommendation from someone else. MProper Mimi teamed up with Chef Keesha O'Galdez, founder and owner of The Gourmet Diva Inc. from our very first episode and Sommelier and wine educator Lea Faith Williams, founder of Let's Talk Wine to host a virtual wine tasting. Our ladies extraordinaire walked us through the process of how to pair and taste wine and find what we like about the wine we are drinking! We focused on women in wine, particularly Black women in the wine industry for our wine recommendations. What we found was that it was difficult for some people to find wine in their local stores from the following Black owned wineries and winemakers: Brown Estate, McBride Sisters, Theopolis Vineyards, Stuyvesant Champagne and Aslina Wines. Whether it's due to demographics or distribution, you can ask your local store to order these and other Black owned wines for your tasting pleasure or go right to the source and order direct! We invited Paula Harrell, from P. Harrell Wines to join us afterwards for an intimate conversation about Black Women in wine and what some of their experiences have been in the wine industry. Mimi talked with Lea, Keesha and Paula about what first sparked their interest in wine, to various challenges and accomplishments they have achieved. We hope this episode helps to open the world of wine to women and empower them to identify what they like to drink and why. As always, we want to encourage supporting Black businesses and women in business as well. Listen and share MProper Mimi with other Black women and anyone who is passionate about conversations that empower women everywhere! Email Mimi with questions or comments! Writing to Strengthen Your Voice and Preserve your Memories

Episode 16: Do you remember writing essays and correcting grammar in school? How did that make you feel? MProper Mimi sits down to chat with writer and educator Yolande Jackson about the benefits to taking time out to write down your feelings and new ways to express yourself. In addition to writing Rocko's Big Launch and The Devine Cookbook, Yolande also teaches writing classes. In an effort to make writing more social and appealing to adults, she also hosts Wine Down and Write, a prompted writing class with different themes and a virtual sharing of a different wine each week. I don't want you to think that Mimi pairs wine with all of her activities! We used our time together talking about the importance of everyday people writing their stories during the racial and social injustices that we are all surrounded by. Documenting our experiences for society and our families is just as important as using writing as a form of self care and mental wellness. Be sure to listen and share this episode with others that can use a way to explore the power in using their words to express themselves! Follow Yolande on social media and pick up a copy of her award winning book self-published book, Rocko's Big Launch, a story about a young boy who wants to be a rocket scientist! https://www.yolandeclarkjackson.com/rocko-rocket IG: @Winedownandwrite Other books we mentioned in this episode are listed below: LIT: A Memoir by Mary Karr Krik?
