I had such an awesome conversation with Takaharu and Yui, and you can easily get a feel for the passion they have for what they do and trying to create the best environment possible for kids. They give us the 'why' behind many of the design elements of Fuji Kindergarten that I hadn't heard before, and I believe we can use many of those same principles in schools around the world, no matter the design.
I hope you enjoy listening this episode as much as I did, and if we have earned it, please consider subscribing and giving us a 5 star review! Thank you!

Seth Almekinder is an elementary/middle school teacher at Naples Central School in NY. He taught for years in Poland and other various schools around the world, and this year will be leaving Naples to teach in Bangladesh. These experiences have helped Seth develop an excellent learning experience for his students in which they spend one full day outside each week doing place-based education. He explains how in the beginning of the year they start out with short local hikes, and by the end of the year his students are working up to 5-6 miles in a day.
Listen as Seth shares how he developed this program and how he implements it, and how despite spending a full day outside of the classroom learning, his students aren't missing out on learning opportunities and falling behind. These are the type of educators we love to highlight on MOVRS!

Kelly and Juliet Starrett are the founders of The Ready State, and authors of the New York Times' Bestseller Built to Move. "This is the first body book written for exercisers and nonexercisers alike. It’s full of foundational wisdom for everyone from professional athletes to gym haters and everyone in between. Built to Move introduces readers to a set of simple principles and practices that are undemanding enough to work into any busy schedule, lead to greater ease of movement, better health, and a happier life doing whatever it is you love to do—and want to continue doing as long as you live. This book is your game plan for the long game."
This is my second time interviewing Kelly, first with Juliet, and I wish I could interview them one-hundred times more. They have an amazing perspective on fitness and health, and especially how that weaves into parenting. They are masters of their craft, designing simple and effective movements practices that are accessible to all. This book is one that should be in everyone's home, and incorporated into all of our lives.

Linda McGurk is the author of the best-selling book "There's No Such Thing as Bad Weather: A Scandinavian Mom's Secrets for Raising Healthy, Resilient, and Confident Kids (from Friluftsliv to Hygge)". This book has changed my life in so many ways, opening my eyes to the value of spending time in nature, regardless of the weather. As a child, I spent all day every day outside, even in the winters growing up in Western New York. As an adult, I realized I lost that connection with nature, and this book was one of the main catalysts to me reconnecting with the outdoors again, and has transformed my teaching career and family life.
Linda and I focus in on several topics from her book including:

  • Free range parenting
  • Social trust
  • The fear of falling kids falling behind in academics and athletics
  • Friluftsliv (open air life)
  • Nature and the immune system
