Ginny Yurich is the founder of 1000 Hours Outside, "a global movement designed for any age child (or adult) and any environment" meant to encourage families to spend more time outside. I have been implementing this program and tracker sheets with my students at school, and with my son at home. Once you get your kids outside, nature takes care of everything for you. In this day and age of screen use, it is more important than ever to encourage outdoor play. Enjoy the show, and be sure to check out Ginny's website and social for more!
"We track a lot of things these days - steps, calories, budgets, frequent flyer miles etc - why not track something so beneficial to our children as well? There are so many things that compete for our time so it's easy for something like this to get back-burnered. We found that if we spread these 4-6 hour chunks out over a few days (shooting for roughly 20 hours a week) it would take us to averaging about 1,000 hours of outside activity a year. That seems insane, maybe - we get it. But did you know the average American child spends 1,200 hours a year in front of screens? Now THAT seems insane to us, but hey, we get it - parenting is hard and sometimes those screens 'seem' like such a welcome reprieve from the chaos. We certainly are not militant about it and we don't take a 'no screens ever or you will surely die' approach either. But we would, quite vehemently, argue that nature- big, beautiful, bountiful nature - is the absolute and very BEST reprieve for you and your children. Honestly, they don't even compare!"

I had such an awesome conversation with Takaharu and Yui, and you can easily get a feel for the passion they have for what they do and trying to create the best environment possible for kids. They give us the 'why' behind many of the design elements of Fuji Kindergarten that I hadn't heard before, and I believe we can use many of those same principles in schools around the world, no matter the design.
I hope you enjoy listening this episode as much as I did, and if we have earned it, please consider subscribing and giving us a 5 star review! Thank you!
Bio:
Takaharu and Yui Tezuka have extensive experience designing spaces for children, such as Fuji Kindergarten, which was named the best school in the world by OECD(Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) and UNESCO. They recently received the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture from UNESCO. Takaharu`s TED Talk recorded 7th in the world for the number of views in 2015. While their activity is based on architectural design, they hold lectures all over the world, receiving offers from OECD. Their theory on children`s environment is published as the "Yellowbook" from Harvard University. ( Learn more at http://www.tezuka-arch.com/)

I've been a long time fan of hers, first being introduced to her nutrition expertise in the CrossFit space. Mitchell Kirsch is a professional basketball player, basketball trainer, and founder of Elevate Academy. Elevate Academy is a community for basketball enthusiasts of all levels, from aspiring players to seasoned coaches and trainers looking for the best information, courses, drills, and resources to bring their game to the next level.
I found Mitchell through his Instagram account @hoopin_mitch, where I was captivated by his unique approaching to teaching basketball skills to kids. He focuses on providing the players with opportunities to create "movement solutions" that are more applicable to games, rather than the convential drills most often used by coaches. I couldv'e spent hours nerding out with him on everything basketball, and I hope to talk with him again to pick his brain some more!

From https://functional-bodybuilding.com/about/:
Hi, I’m Marcus Filly, the founder of Functional Bodybuilding. After leaving medical school, I turned instead to health and fitness to help people more directly with training and nutrition in their day to day lives. Drawing on an extensive training background in soccer and my competitive Crossfit career, I owned an affiliate for years before changing methodologies to help athletes better succeed through individual coaching. After the 2016 CrossFit Games, I was burned out and broken, and about to become a first time father. Functional Bodybuilding was born out of a need to train more for longevity and sustainability – while still looking good and moving well.
