Welcome to a September to Remember here at Movies that Make Us. With FanX just around the corner, we’re looking back at some of the classics of our generation and this week we discuss the 1984 film The Karate Kid.
It’s the story of a teenage boy and his single mom who move from New Jersey to Reseda, California and his struggles to fit in, finding love, and overcoming the local bullies. He learns karate from Mr. Miyagi, but he also learns about patience, kindness, all while waxing cars, painting fences, and sanding the fences.
What are your thoughts on the film? Next week, we continue with our September to Remember with The Princess Bride. As always, you can reach us at [email protected].

To Infinity War and Beyond
Movies That Make Us
03/13/19 • 46 min
In its opening weekend, Captain Marvel managed to exceed expectations by bringing in $153 million domestically and $455 worldwide. This all happened despite a large number of mixed reviews and even trolls who tried to sink the audience review scores on Rotten Tomatoes.
To add a little perspective to these numbers, Captain Marvel now ranks as the sixth largest worldwide opening in history. It's seventh on the list of US openings. Also, in the US, Captain Marvel scored Marvel’s second-largest domestic opening weekend for a film that isn’t either a sequel or an Avengers team-up. (Black Panther is the largest with $202 million in 2018.)
It's pretty safe to say that Captain Marvel is a success. At least it's a success in terms of finances. But what about in terms of how good of a movie it is?
Join Val, Tracy, Jake, and two special guests as they share their thoughts on Captain Marvel. What was good, what was bad, and what was just okay. Be warned, spoilers will be plentiful. And here's a small spoiler for you... Their initial thoughts on the movie are different after having thought about them for a few days.
Have you seen Captian Marvel yet? If not, please explain yourself at [email protected]. Seriously. We want to know why. And if you have seen it, let us know your thoughts. Do you agree with us? Are we totally wrong about everything? Or do you just have a suggestion or a random piece of feedback for us? You can send that to us too!

Movies That Make Us
10/13/20 • 48 min
In this video, Jake and Val discuss the new Netflix film, Enola Holmes, starring Millie Bobby Brown, Henry Cavill, Sam Claftin, and Helena Bonham Carter.
This film was more fun than we thought it would be, and the cinematography was beautiful. Find out what else we liked about the movie and let us know what you thought of the film.
We also discuss the future of movies- Theaters vs. streaming. And we wonder together when Disneyland might reopen.
What do you think of Enola Holmes? Do you have a suggestion for an upcoming episode? Did Tracy say something you disagreed with? You can send all of that feedback to [email protected].

A Knight's Tale
Movies That Make Us
04/18/22 • 63 min
Welcome to the latest edition of Movies that Make Us. This week, we discuss the 2001 film A Knight’s Tale starring Heath Ledger, Alan Tudyk, Paul Bettany, and Rufus Sewell. The film follows a squire who poses as a knight and competes in tournaments and becomes friends with Geoffrey Chaucer and Edward the Black Prince. Full of pop culture nods and a 1970’s soundtrack, this is a fun film that is full of heart, humor, and holds up very well.
This week, we are joined by our friend James A. Owen, author of the Here, There Be Dragons book series, illustrator, comic nerd, time lord, and much more. He brings some great insight into this film and how it literally changed his stars in his professional career.
What are your thoughts on the film? As always, you can reach us at [email protected].

Never Grow Up
Movies That Make Us
08/12/19 • 39 min
Finding Neverland came out in 2004 and starred Johnny Depp, Kate Winslet, and Freddie Highmore. The supporting cast was also exceptionally strong. This film was directed by Marc Forster, who also directed Monster’s Ball, Stranger Than Fiction, The Kite Runner, Quantum of Solace, World War Z, and Christopher Robin. How’s that for a diverse resume? And why aren’t more people talking about Marc Forster?
Join our team as we take a look at what made Finding Neverland so magical. From the performances, to the story to the look and feel of the film. We cover it all here. Kate Winslet and Johnny Depp have incredible chemistry. Freddie Highmore more than holds his own on screen with Johnny Depp. This is a film that reminds us why Johnny Depp is such a talented actor to begin with. Plus a strong performance from Kelly Macdonald (Merida, from Brave).
As we discuss the film we discover the theme of not always letting go of everything as we grow up. It’s ok to hang on to the fantastic and the magic we felt as kids. And how important hanging on to those things might be as we get older. In other words, never grow up. At least not completely.
What di you think of Finding Neverland? Let us know by sending your feedback to [email protected]. You can also send us feedback on any of our previous episodes as well as suggestions or requests for future shows.

Welcome back to Movies that Make Us. This week we’re doing something new, we’re discussing the new Star Wars series The Acolyte streaming on Disney+. Plus, we have a special guest star Dave “The Babe” Hoffman joins us as well.
Everyone on the panel loves Star Wars. We have no issues with women in starring roles. We do have issues with bad pacing, boring characters, and some awful makeup and special effects. Are we the only ones disappointed with this latest entry in the Star Wars universe? We want to know what you think. Let us know!

Con Air
Movies That Make Us
11/22/21 • 48 min
Welcome back to Nicholas Cage November and this week we’re discussing the Michael Bay action 1997 film Con Air.
It’s the story of a former Army Ranger who accidentally killed a man while protecting his wife, who has become eligible for parole, and ends up on a plane full of the worst criminals in the world. Featuring a stellar cast of Nicholas Cage, John Cusack, John Malkovich, Steve Buscemi, Ving Rhames, Dave Chapelle, and Danny Trejo. It’s Michael Bay unleashed, so there’s plenty of explosions, slow motion hair, and Nick Cage’s deep fried southern accent that has to be experienced to be understood.
What are your thoughts on the film? Next week, we continue with our Nicholas Cage November with Pig. As always, you can reach us at [email protected].

Staff Picks: G-Rated Movies
Movies That Make Us
10/04/21 • 52 min
Welcome to the first Monday of October and it’s time for Staff Picks! Once again, Val, Jake, and Tracy select three films and we discuss and recommend them to you. This month we all selected films that are G rated.
Tracy picked the 1973 Disney classic Robin Hood. It’s the retelling of the classic English tale of the scoundrel that robs from the rich to give to the poor. He also selected the Disney/Pixar film Ratatouille, and the 1982 cult classic The Last Unicorn.
Val also selected Ratatouille because great minds think alike! She discussed the G film that many mommy bloggers want to be re-rated as PG, which is My Fair Lady. She also picked the 2008 Hayao Miyazaki film Ponyo about a goldfish princess that longs to become human.
Jake selected the 1991 Disney classic Beauty and the Beast, the Dennis Quaid live action film The Rookie, and also selected a Miyazaki film in My Neighbor Totoro. The film centers on two young sisters who live in an old country house with their father and wait for their mother to recover from an illness. They encounter and befriend playful spirits.
What are your thoughts on these films? Next week we kick off Classic Monster Movie month in honor of Halloween. We’re excited to discuss some of these legends of the silver screen and may even have a special guest join us for an episode.
