E115: Does your menstrual cycle affect your ADHD? Hormones, periods, and ADHD symptoms
Motherhood in ADHD – Parenting with ADHD, Productivity Tips, Brain based Science, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Education to Help Moms with Adult ADHD
10/21/21 • 24 min
All right, today we're talking about the elephant in the room: MENSTRUAL CYCLES.
I know, I know - not everyone's favorite subject! But it's something we all deal with so we might as well discuss how our hormones and our periods affect us as mamas with ADHD.
When you think about hormones, think about HOW MUCH your body has evolved through your life. Adolescence, puberty, pregnancy, postpartum...there's no denying everything's in flux pretty much all the time.
So, the question is what do we REALLY need to know and how can we navigate our ADHD symptoms while our bodies are on a constant hormonal roller coaster?
Sadly, there isn't a lot of research on the topic but there are a few really great resources that I'm excited to share in today's episode!
Don't worry mama...I got you!
I did a looooot of digging and I think you'll love the tools and resources I'm sharing. They'll shed some light on how our bodies work and what to do to be even MORE successful and gracious with ourselves as a woman with ADHD. Plus a big thank you to my friend and mentor, ADHD Coach Elizabeth Brink, for the research help! @coachelizabethbrink

E165: How To Do Less But Better, Especially When You Have a Busy Brain with Tracy Stanger
Motherhood in ADHD – Parenting with ADHD, Productivity Tips, Brain based Science, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Education to Help Moms with Adult ADHD
11/03/22 • 46 min
When a thought pops in your head, do you feel like you need to do something with it right away or else you’ll forget?
That whack-a-mole thinking is a stressful way to live. Not everything we think of is both urgent and important. Actually, most things are not important and very few are urgent.
But how do we determine what really matters? Prioritizing is really difficult when you have ADHD!
Meet Tracy Stanger, an anti-hustle business coach for moms. Even if you don’t have a business, you’ll want to hit play for these gems on prioritizing and learning to say no. Motherhood is a whole lot like running a business, as you are the one juggling all the things, filling in all the paperwork, managing the people, spending the money, and executing the tasks.
Tracy believes we deserve work that lights us up and makes an impact on the world, and that we do have plenty of time for that work, even with motherhood trying to take it all up. The solution is to do Less But Better (instead of trying to #doitall). She helps her clients and students find YOUR most impactful tasks and make it easier to get those things done.

E134: Hate Reading and Math? You're Not Stupid! How Irlen Syndrome Affects Your Vision and Learning
Motherhood in ADHD – Parenting with ADHD, Productivity Tips, Brain based Science, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Education to Help Moms with Adult ADHD
03/10/22 • 10 min
Well, it might not be your eyes OR your ADHD, mama. It might be something called Irlen Syndrome.
Not only does it tend to go along with ADHD (& autism!), it can lead to misdiagnosis.
Irlen Syndrome, also called Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome, is a perceptual processing disorder, not a vision problem. For those of us who have it, it can lead to some funky vision impairment and:
- Extreme light sensitivity
- Wanting/needing to read in dim light
- Seeing waves or “rivers” in between the lines of text as we read
- Poor depth perception
- Bad coordination issues & clumsiness
- Low self-esteem or motivation
…and more.
However, even if you get this diagnosis, there’s good news:
There are things that can help!
Tune in to this week’s episode of Motherhood in ADHD to find out more about this condition and learn what you can do to counter these tough symptoms, including what symptoms to look for in children.

E197 : Coping with ADHD as a Mom from The Balanced Parent Podcast with Guest Host Laura Froyen, PhD - Best of Friends Series
Motherhood in ADHD – Parenting with ADHD, Productivity Tips, Brain based Science, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Education to Help Moms with Adult ADHD
07/13/23 • 48 min
When was the last time your ADHD affected your kids and you were kicking yourself for it?
While you get frustrated enough that your ADHD affects your own life, it's 100 times worse when it hurts your kids. Meet my friend, Laura Froyen, PhD. Laura and I connected over our mutual love for advocating for kids. Her take on gentle parenting is refreshing and doable.
In this episode, Laura and I chat about how to deal with ADHD as a mom on her podcast, The Balanced Parent Podcast, where she helps families connect more deeply and authentically.
Laura writes:
ADHD is getting a lot of buzz out there in the world recently, and many adults, especially women (who as girls perhaps had their symptoms overlooked) are getting diagnosed, sometimes alongside their kids. I've spoken to quite a few of you who have gone through this process and so many of you have expressed initial feelings of relief, that there is a real, true reason that things have always seemed a bit harder for you, and it's not because you're a failure, you're just wired a bit differently. But after that relief there tends to be a feeling of... "Ok, what now?" So, if you're newly diagnosed with ADHD , or even if you have some suspicions that this may be going on for you or your kids, this episode is for you! I have brought in a friend and a colleague, Patricia Sung, who is an ADHD expert and the host of the Motherhood in ADHD podcast. She helps moms with ADHD get themselves together one step at a time and feel confident in running their family life. After years of serial entrepreneurship and teaching middle school, she has a uniquely practical perspective on strategies for building a life that works when your brain is different. Whether you have it yourself and it complicates your life or if you're noticing it in your kids, Patricia will help us figure out how to make things a little bit easier for you. Here's what we talked about:
- Learn about your (or your child's) brain and how your ADHD affects you (or your child)
- Recognizing you need help and finding the right person (therapist/coach)
- Common symptoms of ADHD that we need to look out for
- How ADHD affects your motherhood
- Strategies to help overwhelmed moms

No one pushes your buttons like your kids or partner can! Angry moms unite!
Jokes aside, when anger gets out of hand, nothing good happens. Not only do we hurt ourselves and the people around us, the shame and guilt add on even more weight.
This was a huge problem for me for the first few years of parenting. I still yell sometimes cuz I’m not perfect. You can be free of the angry red eyed monster, too.
How can you tell you’re about to lose your cool?
What can you stop taking your anger out on your family?
How can you show up as the caring, calm mom you want to be?
Let’s discuss.

“I’ve tried everything!”
When you’re dealing with a particularly frustrating problem that’s gone on for years, like parenting your exasperating child, looking for relief from a chronic health issue, or advocating for your child struggling at school, you start to run out of energy AND optimism.
When you’ve got a situation that feels hopeless...
When you’ve run out of ideas...
When you’ve looked under every rock and barked up every tree...
Should you just give up?
Sigh.
Except you REALLY want to find a solution. You’re not ready to give up on your kid, your health, the things that truly matter to you.
What’s a mom to do?
My kindergartener surprised me with his fresh take on counting last week, and it made me think twice about how I look at the same-old-same-old.
In today’s episode, I’m sharing five valuable ways to find a fresh perspective when you feel overwhelmed or stuck. Let’s look outside the box and past the same advice you’ve heard 37 times to find what you actually need or could use.
These are the kinds of problems that are worth another go. You’re worth it, too.

E242: Managing ADHD in Perimenopause with David W. Goodman, M.D.
Motherhood in ADHD – Parenting with ADHD, Productivity Tips, Brain based Science, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Education to Help Moms with Adult ADHD
10/03/24 • 51 min
You're not imagining it.
Your ADHD symptoms can change as you age.
ADHD in older adults can be very different than when you were younger and it's definitely not researched enough yet!
You don't need to qualify as a senior citizen before your age affects your ADHD, so youngin’s and elders alike, let's listen in.
For ADHD Awareness Month, we’re talking to a new ADHD guest expert every week.
Today’s guest is David W. Goodman, M.D., an expert in ADHD in older adults.
David W. Goodman, M.D. is Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Norton School of Medicine, State University of New York-Upstate. An internationally recognized expert, he has presented over 750 lectures to medical specialists, authored peer-reviewed scientific papers, conducted clinical research on several of the ADHD medications now on the market, serves as a consultant to the NFL, widely quoted in national media, teaches 4th-year psychiatric residents at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and serves on the executive committee of APSARD (American Professional Society for ADHD and Related Disorders).
In this episode, Dr. Goodman shares a great refresher on the basics of ADHD and how to determine if you've met with a qualified diagnostician to get your ADHD assessment. He dives into the nuances of how ADHD can be confused with other disorders, conditions, and comorbidities. Then we uncover how ADHD can change through your lifespan and how hormonal shifts in perimenopause and menopause affect your ADHD symptoms.
I'm also over the moon that Dr. Goodman is currently working with his fellow experts to redefine the symptoms checklist for ADHD diagnoses in adults.
Let’s dive into a much-needed conversation about how you change over your lifetime, as we look at ADHD in older adults and perimenopause.

Motherhood in ADHD – Parenting with ADHD, Productivity Tips, Brain based Science, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Education to Help Moms with Adult ADHD
11/23/23 • 40 min
How do you feel when you think about taking ADHD medication?
Nervous?
Hopeful?
Overwhelmed?
The process of obtaining and finding the right medication can feel like A LOT.
First, you have to approach the subject with your doctor (who may or may not be well-informed about ADHD) -- and then there is finding the right type and dosing of medication, dealing with potential side effects, and the whole process of trial and error.
It never goes perfectly. But it can go more smoothly -- when you take a few steps to plan and prepare for it.
On this episode of Motherhood in ADHD, I share all my best tips and strategies for starting ADHD medication that I learned the hard way -- from tackling that first conversation with your doc, to riding out your first few months.
You'll learn:
- Tips for remembering to take your medication daily (No more, "Ugh, did I actually take that today?" moments)
- How to take your medication for maximum effectiveness
- How to work with your doctor to start and stop medication safely
- Tips for finding the right dosing
- What to do if you can't afford your ADHD medication
- Tips for approaching the topic of ADHD medication with your doctor (No, you're not a "drug seeker"!)
- And so much more!
Your first go-round with ADHD medication doesn't have to be a disaster. You deserve to feel confident, informed and fear-free while you find a treatment plan that works for you.
**This material is not intended as medical advice. Please consult your doctor or a trained medical professional to find the treatment plan that best fits your personal situation.**

E121: Estrogen, Progesterone, and Your Menstrual Cycle: Do scientific research studies prove that our ADHD symptoms are affected by our hormone levels? with Dr. Michelle Martel
Motherhood in ADHD – Parenting with ADHD, Productivity Tips, Brain based Science, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Education to Help Moms with Adult ADHD
12/02/21 • 32 min
What is scientific research REALLY doing for women with ADHD?
It might *feel* like there is no research being done to help women with ADHD...but my guest today has insight into what's ACTUALLY going on behind the scientific research curtain.
Dr. Michelle Martel, a professor and Director of Clinical Training of Psychology for the University of Kentucky, utilizes a translational, “bench to bedside” perspective to examine developmental pathways to Disruptive Behavior Disorders (DBD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), using multiple levels of analysis.
Her bio is impressive and our conversation is SO GOOD.
Her research uncovers what's really going on in the brains of people with ADHD and further - figures out what's going on internally with our hormones.
Dr. Martel brings tons of knowledge around how our hormonal fluctuations affect our ADHD symptoms AND what that means for our mental and emotional health.
I'm thankful for people like Dr. Martel who have dedicated time and energy to helping the ADHD community. Her research is not only fascinating, it gives YOU, Successful Mama, options to improve your life by understanding your body.
DID YOU KNOW? There's a place where you can get your calendar and to-do list organized one step at a time, so you enjoy more time with your kids while feeling confident + capable in your day... even when your ADHD hijacks your plan.
