Melissa is a mom who is entering the next chapter of her life “Empty Nesting”. She has three beautiful daughters ranging from 25-18, and a mom in law to one amazing son. She is married to the love of her life, Raul, a native of Mexico. They are celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary this year. She is also mom to 4 furbabies (1 spoiled Shih Tzu and 3 cats) and a grand ”fur” mom to 2 cats and 1 dwarf hamster.

In her spare time, she enjoys reading, crafting, binge-watching Hart of Dixie on Netflix, and encouraging others to be their best. She has just recently overcome anxiety from being in way too many car accidents. (their fault not hers) and now she is burning up the roads exploring her beloved state of North Carolina. As well as launching a Facebook Live talk show called Chats from the Blog Cabin. In this forum, she isn't afraid to tackle the hard topics like race, the LGBTQ community, being authentic, and embracing who you are.

Get to Know Melissa

Do you have a nickname?Frugal Mom

How old are you?51

How old are you at heart?25

What is your title and company?Owner | Adventures of Frugal Mom

What year did you launch your business?2011

What has been a highlight during the time you’ve run your business?Being able to interview one of the Real Housewives of Dallas for my women in business series. Also when the first person I stepped out of my comfort zone to interview for a series on the blog told me that they have been impressed with how far I have come. And to watch the blog grow is amazing.

What has been a lowlight and how did you bounce back?Female entrepreneurs who ride my coattails and then steal my ideas. Learning that sometimes things need to be kept in the vault until it is time to bring them into the business

What do you tell yourself that keeps you motivated? That there is a purpose behind everything I do that God sent the people and companies my way to fulfill His plan for me. Do I always know that plan? Nope. Do I balk at the plan? Yep, most days I do but still, that is what keeps me motivated.

What would you say is one thing you do that refreshes you?Walking getting exercise and spending time with friends. Sometimes I combine all 3 things.

What do you want readers to gain from following you on social media?I want them to know they aren't alone in how they are feeling. Too many times, influencers don't share their real-life on social media and that creates a false sense that many people don't feel like they can live up to. With me what you see is what you get - somedays I am put together and somedays I am a mess but I am categorically me!! So if they want a taste of real-life experiencing menopause, watching children grow up, and being married to an immigrant from Mexico than that is what they get when they follow me.

What lessons have you learned through running your business and pursuing your dreams?I have learned I have to get out of my own way. Because let's face it, we are our own worst critics. I had to let go of all the anxiety I felt and the what-if questions to step into the plans God has for me.

What year did you launch your business?2018

What has been a highlight during the time you’ve run your business? The flexibility it has given me to homeschool my high schooler. When my daughter was younger, I spent many years working and spent no quality time with her. Raising her felt like a burden to my success at work-that's why I quit. Now I'm getting that time back, and I love it.

What has been a lowlight and how did you bounce back?Years spent trying to find my niche. I had two groups of women I was passionate about helping. I'm multi-passionate and wanted to help the women I see as well as the women who are around me (friends, and family). Eventually, I chose one group and have been focused.I spent a lot of time frustrated and confused. Did God really call me to entrepreneurship? But I kept doing the work, seeing clients, praying, asking, and eventually, it came to me.

What do you tell yourself that keeps you motivated?I find I have less motivation the older I get-which has been difficult. In my twenties, I was passionate, driven, and ambitious. In my forties, I don't want to spend as much time working. I want to spend time with my daughter and do other things like traveling. However, to get that life I have to work. I think of my "why" all of the time to help me focus. Also, setting up systems where you don't think and just do, also helps. Motivation comes every once in a while. If you wait until you are motivated you will never get anything done.

What would you say is one thing you do that refreshes you?Naps and daily prayer time! I nap daily in the middle of the day. I work best at night so that's how I structure my schedule. Also my time with God in the morning. I spill everything in the morning so I'm not thinking about things during the day I can't control. I surrender and give them up early in the morning.

What do you want readers to gain from following you on social media?Clarity, simplification, and mindset shifts that women need to make. My email list is also where I spend most time giving tips.

What lessons have you learned through running your business and pursuing your dreams?I worked in a university setting for over twenty years, and while it was challenging work, it was easier than entrepreneurship. In a company, you have an audience and a mission, and your job is to do your job. As an entrepreneur, you are creating all of it: an audience, establishing yourself as an expert, the mission, etc.I also have to see my dreams as something that can actually happen. It's very easy to give up because it's hard but I have to learn to stay focused.

What is your favorite lipstick color?l don't wear lipstick. Natural colored gloss

Do you prefer coffee or tea?Hot chocolate!

Finish this sentence: “Be the woman....”Be the woman who changes her mind about what's possible.

Rising from the Fire to Find Your Creativity with Lucy Brummett

Meet Lucy

Lucy's story as a writer began in high school and she started out writing poetry for herself. She used to read her mom's romance novels and got hooked. There is a romance novel that she started years ago that is still waiting to be told. When her mother-in-law became sick with cancer she took a class called "Writing from the heart." She's a former newspaper columnist, has published a few short stories in two books with a group of writers, and was a contributor this past summer in a women's magazine.

You can do both, your children do not need to be a hurdle to your dreamsConquering your fears of being visible (she didn’t want to be online)Biggest fear: you’re not ready yetSome of Lucy’s biggest challenges have brought new levels of creativityWhen you are in your element it feels like magic and it’s something you look forward to doing

Do you have a nickname?I've had a variety of nicknames depending on my friends.

How old are you?46

How old are you at heart?Sometimes I'm 16 and other times I feel 21.

What is your title and company?Writer/Lula Lucy

What year did you launch your business?2016

What has been a highlight during the time you’ve run your business?I would have to say by pursuing my dream and being consistent it has opened up doors of opportunity.

What has been a lowlight and how did you bounce back?

Worrying too much on the perceptions of others. We all want to do our best. Sometimes you're extra vulnerable during the pursuit of your dream and you can be a victim of self-doubt. I try to find a like-minded person that I can talk to and then shake it off and get back on track. We all have our moments and need to believe in ourselves more.

What do you tell yourself that keeps you motivated?

That no matter how scary it looks that I have to keep on going. Going backwards is not an option. I tell myself that I'm worthy of receiving the awesome things that I am looking for.

What would you say is one thing you do that refreshes you?

Archery always refreshes me. It is a time that I can focus on shooting my compound bow and not think of anything else. It's me and my bow. It gives me clarity. I love the challenge that it gives me. I am completely absorbed in that moment to see if I that I can shoot the target that I'm aiming for.

What do you want readers to gain from following you on social media?

I would like them to feel inspired and motivated. To feel good about pursuing their dream whether it is a personal one or as an entrepreneur. I want to share things that are relatable, that will make them think and maybe even dig deeper.

What lessons have you learned through running your business and pursuing your dreams?

That I'm stronger than I think and that I matter more than I think sometimes. To accept when the awesome opportunities come my way because of what I do. That whatever percentage I put into this is what it takes to propel me forward always. Staying consistent and patient.

What is your favorite lipstick color?I am definitely in the berries color scheme and like to rock out a classic red also.

Do you prefer coffee or tea?Coffee hands down every time! I'm willing to try any kind of flavor whether it is straight coffee or a latte.

Finish this sentence: “Be the woman....”Be the woman that unleashes her inner warrior to do the things that are worth fighting for.
